PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Welcome to Term 3!
What a fantastic way to begin the term—with our talented Performing Arts students showcasing their work in Henbury’s first-ever performance at the Darwin Fringe Festival! It was an absolute pleasure to watch our students shine both on stage and behind the scenes. A huge congratulations to Flynn, our Performing Arts teacher, for leading this exciting opportunity.
Another chance for our students to take the stage is coming up on September 3rd at the Darwin Convention Centre. Our BEAT Choir will join with other NT schools in this year’s performance, Tempest. Students have been rehearsing all year alongside Nemarluk School. Thank you to Miss Lauren and all the staff supporting their involvement—what a memorable experience it will be!
On Wednesday 6 August, we proudly celebrated PRIDE Day as a joyful recognition of diversity, inclusion and respect. Students and staff embraced the day with colour, creativity and kindness—showing support for our LGBTQIA+ community and reinforcing that everyone belongs at Henbury. Through inclusive activities and conversations, we continue to foster a safe and welcoming environment where every student feels seen, valued and celebrated for who they are.
Our NT Learning Commissioners are also gearing up for an exciting milestone. This coming Monday, they’ll collaborate with Nemarluk for their mid-way pitch—an opportunity to reflect on their progress, successes, and challenges. One of their key projects, Best Last Day, is scheduled for the final day of Term 3. Thank you to Miss Amanda for guiding this year’s team—we can’t wait to hear how the pitch goes!
In the final weeks of Term 3, parents and carers will be invited to attend their child’s Education Adjustment Plan (EAP) review meeting. Each teacher is allocated a day to schedule these meetings, where they will share your child’s progress and recommendations for future goals and adjustments. We highly value your input and partnership in this process. Please make the time to attend and ensure your voice is part of the planning for your child’s ongoing success.
As always, thank you for your ongoing support. I look forward to another productive and inspiring term ahead.

FROM THIS LAND
Henbury Students Shine at Darwin Fringe Festival with Eco-Themed Puppet Production
In Week One of Term 3, Henbury School students proudly took to the stage for three performances of their original production From This Land, showcased as part of the Darwin Fringe Festival. The show, led by Henbury’s dedicated and creative Performing Arts teacher, Flynn, marked the culmination of a semester’s worth of hard work and imagination.
Students were challenged to design and create their own puppet prototypes, which they then brought to life on stage through an inspiring blend of storytelling and performance. From This Land delivered a heartwarming and thought-provoking narrative centred around ecological responsibility, sustainability, and the environmental impact of human actions.
With large-scale puppets and powerful visual storytelling, the production captivated audiences and sparked important conversations about how we can all contribute to a better world. Beyond performance, students were deeply involved in every element of theatre-making — from scriptwriting and character development to costume design, set construction, puppet-making, and mastering production elements like lighting and sound.
Flynn reflected on the experience: "Seeing the students embrace the whole process, demonstrate courage in front of a live audience, and grow in confidence, teamwork, and artistic expression was a truly memorable teaching experience."
Principal Sarah Corry: “The performances were a testament to the students’ creativity, resilience, and commitment, and highlighted the power of the arts in education and advocacy. With over 200 audience members from school groups, families, to community members and tourists visiting from across Australia, it truly was an amazing opportunity for our students to shine.

SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING STEM CHALLENGE
On the 22nd of July, 30 students from Henbury School participated in the Stem Challenge hosted by Newcastle University on the CDU campus.
It was the first time that Henbury students had participated in STEM projects outside Henbury School. Our students performed extremely well. The solutions to challenges involved several steps and lots of trial and error with checking and modifying of outcomes. The staff that attended this excursion were extremely proud of our students. Henbury School was one of six schools that took part in the following challenges.

Below are some student comments on the day.
“I enjoyed trying new things.” Kinisha Yellow 3
“The wind turbine challenge was excellent.” Ayden Yellow 5
“It was hard, fun and exhausting all at the same time.” Molyun Green 3
“It was fun trying to catch the different sized marbles rolling down in the fish trap challenge.” Laura Green 3
“I liked making and shooting the glider with Jade.” Lebron Green 4
In the eco-habitat challenge, the student design was extremely waterproof, but not so successful at staying intact in the strong wind. Jovanni and his group carefully designed blades for a wind turbine that could reach a generating speed of nearly 300km. Only two other groups achieved better results. In the bridge design challenge, students laughed when a trolley train carrying 2kg, imploded on itself in spectacular fashion when crossing their bridge.

CSC 1, 2, and 3 have been hard at work as Semester Two kicks off. Many of our students have been involved in various VET courses including: Animal Care, Automotive, Bakery, and Retail. CSC staff can confirm the Bakery students are budding Bakers as they have been bringing in brilliantly baked breads and cakes for the staff to sample!
In the classroom, students are continuing to work towards their NTCET Modified certificates completing units of work on Financial Literacy, Personal Strengths, and the hit topic of Pop Culture. We all enjoyed hearing music, seeing the changes in fashion and language in different decades.
Graduation Fundraising efforts are still in full swing with the second Bunnings BBQ have taken place in Week 3 with the final BBQ happening at Bunnings Palmerston on Thursday the 14th of August. The BBQs are a great day out as students get a chance to hone their cooking and customer service skills. Thank you to our sponsors Mr Luke Gosling OAM - Member for Solomon and Ms Oly Carlson - Member for Wanguri for their generous support of our BBQ.

PURPLE 2
Purple 2 have worked through our post-holiday funk and are back to our bright eyed, bushy tailed selves. We have been loving the dry season climate during our community access outings to Sunset Park and Lake Alexander. The class got a bit adventurous exploring rock pools and uneven surfaces at Nightcliff Foreshore – luckily the students did a great job of helping each other over tricky sections and we made it back to even ground!

We have also been flexing our art muscles and are currently creating a series of mosaics. The students are nearly as excited as the staff are to decorate our classroom for Pride Day, so there will be some VERY colourful mosaics coming our way. Have an excellent term everyone!

DRIPSTONE
DMS Outreach have been focusing on exploring our community and what has to offer, by visiting local Cafes’ and park adventures. During our excursions, DMS Students enjoyed delicious and refreshing milkshakes at Harrys Café and some of the best sandwiches around! While negativing our community, we are expanding our confidence, financial skills and building a strong sense of belonging.
We have been busy creating amazing underwater art, inspired by creatures beneath the waves, Students have created stunning pieces featuring everything from colourful coral reefs to mysterious deep-sea animals. Using a variety of materials like watercolour paint and pastels to bring our art to life, they expressed their creativity and learned about marine life’s importance to our planet.
