Principal's Report

Dear Parents/Carers

The School Review took place on Wednesday 23 and 24 March. The school review team consisted of Aderyn Chatterton Regional Director Darwin, Liz Veel Principal Sanderson Middle School and Wendy Haynes Acacia Hill School Alice Springs. The school reviewers collected evidence against the School Review document from Senior Staff, classroom teachers, SESOs, school council members, students, OSHC and the Op Shop. Once I have the written report I will share the finding with staff and our school community.

EAP and TEAP plans are currently being written and proofread. This year the plans will be in a new format. The school has worked on designing a new way to write plans and later in the year write reviews and portfolios. When plans come home can parents and carers please read the plan, if changes are needed to be made please make note and then follow up your child's teacher. If no changes are to be made then please sign and return back to school.

Farewells

We say goodbye to Pat and Chris Hills who are leaving to live in Cairns. Pat and Chris have for the last five years been caretakers of the School House and run the Stepping Stones Program overnight and in the morning. Pat is the Director of the Out School Hours Program where she has done a fantastic job. Chris has worked in various jobs around the school, from relief Maintenance Officer, Gardener, Work Trainer and SESO. Just proving how talented he is. Brett Peter who was a SESO for around four years has left to move interstate at the start of the year. Doug Suter is going back to University to become a teacher. I would also like to wish Joan Prasser all the best.

Congratulations to the following SESOs, Wanderson Siqueira and Regina Carlin who won a permanent position. The following staff won a 9 month contract, Leanne Chalker, Anne Marie Davis, Meena Ghimire, Phuong Nguyen, Nichole Ansell and Lesley Scharnberg. Congratulations to Kane Doughty and Anthony Bird who have a 1 term contract.

Henbury School Staff Profile

Amanda Thomas

Hi my name is Amanda Thomas, and I am the new teacher in The Flat this year. This is my first year teaching, having graduated from university late last year. Although I am new to teaching, I have a broad understanding of students' needs and wants and how to best support students for learning and development after being a SESO for 6 years in numerous schools around Darwin and Sydney. I am fortunate to have an amazing SESO (Mario Figueroa) at my side, and we have had a fantastic Term with a lot of amazing things planned for the year ahead.

Outside of school, I am a mother to two amazing children, and I love anything netball – I coach an under 17s team, I play and I support my daughter when she is playing. I am also crazy about Rugby League – go South Sydney Rabbitohs, and I enjoy going to watch my son play rugby league in the local competition.

I have felt very welcomed at Henbury and I am looking forward to the year ahead.

The Flat

Wow, what a fun and busy first Term of the year we have had in The Flat. We can all say that we have settled in really well this year, and we are excited to welcome two new classmates to The Flat - Banjo M from Nermaluk Primary School and Rosemary T from B2. We have also been extremely kind and respectful to our new teacher to our class and Henbury – Amanda Thomas. We have had a lot of fun showing her the ropes at Henbury. In such a short time we have developed some great relationships with our new and old classmates and we are starting to learn how to support each other in our learning to not only work hard, but show resilience when faced with a new task.

This Term, The Flat and our friends in C1 have formed a basketball team 'Henbury High Flyers' and we will be competing against other schools from around Darwin and Palmerston in the Rising Stars Basketball Competition. This competition will commence next Term and will run for 8 weeks. We have started training and are learning about good sportsmanship and how to play as a team.

This Term, we also started our Bus Training and Work Experience Training at the Op Shop. We catch the local bus to the Op Shop every week to perform our Op Shop work tasks and as a class we are remembering our school values to help keep us safe and respectful during both training areas.

From everyone at The Flat we wish you a fun and safe Holiday Break

F1

F1 is a class of all boys. Adrian, Brandon, Harry, Jayden, Manolis and Terry. We've had a great start to the year. The boys have been learning about current events with Behind the News followed by a weekly quiz. We've started our individual cooking program. Jayden made the best ever chicken schnitzel and avocado sushi. For our community access we've been going to local tourist attractions. The boys especially enjoyed the Darwin Military Museum. Another favourite was Fannie Bay Gaol. We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable week off for the school holidays.
