Principal’s Report

Dear Parents/Carers

Moving to new School

Approval has been given by the Chief Executive DoE and supported by School Council for Henbury School to move across to the new school Week 1 Term 3. Monday 25 July is already a professional day for staff with no students attending both on and off campus.

For all students that attend Henbury Campus Tuesday 26 July to Friday 29 July 2016 will be pupil free days to enable staff to set up and fully establish classrooms in the new school.

For students on campus the first day back at school will be Tuesday 2 August, as Monday 1 August is Picnic Day.

Students and staff at all Outreach classes will resume classes on Tuesday 26 July.

Special Needs Transport-There will be no transport for students who attend Henbury Campus 26-29 July. There will be transport for students at Outreaches 26-29 July.

Vacation Care will operate for the week.

As a result of the move across to a new school and then settling in, a decision has been made to have no School Camp for 2016. If you allocated money from your Back to School Voucher, we will be in contact with you to see where you would like this money to be reallocated to.

There will be no Twilight Sports at the end of Term 2 as staff will have to begin preparation for the move. There will be two final whole school events for Term 2, these will be the Science Fair (which is usually held in Term 3) and the final whole school Assembly. At this stage the final assembly has the Choir will performing, The Flat will performing a dance and CSC1 running and hosting with the theme of ‘Farewelling the old Henbury site’.

CSC Day

Students at CSC Outreach held a stall at CSC Day selling Ice Cups and a How many Jelly Beans Competition. Congratulations to Jolina who won 2nd prize in the ANZAC Day art competition. It was also fantastic to see Richard and Nim perform in the Year 10 band. What a talented group of young people.

ANZAC DAY ART

For CSC Day I came second place for the ANZAC Day Art Competition. My art work was displayed in the staffroom with other art works. I came up with a design by looking on google for different images and then mixed the different images together. I brainstormed ideas and drew them in my art book. The final piece I chose was to go into the ANZAC Art Competition. First I used graphite paper and traced my drawing that I drew, on to the paper. When I finished tracing my image I had to transfer it onto cardboard then start colouring it with water pencils. I used a paint brush, wet from the water, and started blending it all in together. My prize for coming second place was an $85 voucher to spend at Jackson’s Art Supplies.

Henbury School Staff Profile

Janine Lacey

Hi, my name is Janine Lacey and I have joined Henbury School this year. I have a background in Science and came to school teaching by first lecturing in the VET sector at CDU. After a few years of doing work training I made the decision to move into the school sector. Up until my move to Henbury I have always taught at primary schools and managed to keep the science connection by teaching Science as a subject and being involved in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program. I started at Henbury this year in E Block and I love my job. Staff and students have been so welcoming and helpful. There have been many new and exciting challenges and I have been on a very steep learning curve. I am slowly but surely getting to know all the students and look forward to many more years of teaching at Henbury School.

G1

The students in G1 have had an exciting and productive start to Term 2. We welcomed two new additions to our classroom - Antony Bird (our new SESO) and Andrew. Ben was the periodical classmate who returned to school this week after being away since February due to undergoing spinal surgery in Adelaide. Ben has demonstrated bravery and sheer determination throughout the last couple of months and he is an inspiration to us all.

G1 have continued working with the Henbury Gardening Crew and business is booming or should we say blooming! Thank you to all the families and local businesses that have requested our services this year. You have given us the opportunity to work on your properties and without your support we would not be the successful team that we are today!

Kyle, Jai and Andrew are part of the Henbury Coffee Shop. They train every Tuesday afternoon and are part of the café staff serving paying customers every Friday morning. The students have learnt how to cook scones, quiches, sausage rolls and pizzas as well as use the barista and prepare cappuccinos, mocha’s, hot chocolates as well as other yummy delicacies.

So come by and have a cuppa at the Henbury Coffee Shop or call and book the Henbury Gardening Crew and see these young adults in action for yourselves!

Thank you to our work coordinators - Matumba and Felicity

Sanderson Middle School Outreach

At Sanderson Outreach, this Semester, we have been doing lots of interesting activities together with Visible Learning being the highlight of all learning areas. We have a class of six boys – Travis, Bradin, Keanu, Alex, William and Eric. We started off this year with 4 new students and an interesting program that involved a variety of classroom activities, work training, enterprise ed., etc. At SMS Outreach our main focus is on Literacy and Numeracy through which students achieve a range of Foundation Learning skills that they use in everyday life: reading, writing, speaking, listening, working with numbers, critical-thinking, problem-solving and using information technology (e.g. computers) and it allows students to communicate effectively and to make sense of the world. We put a lot of emphasis on Henbury School’s values: Respect, Teamwork, Responsibility, Resilience and Care & Compassion, within and outside class activities. In Term 1 we started our work training at the Patch and Crocodylus Park and continued our Cupcake Master’s enterprise education unit from last year. At the Patch students had fun making tool box herb boxes; planting and repotting seeds and seedlings and seeing it fruiting. Our cupcake business has been thriving and bringing in lots of orders from staff at Henbury as well as collecting amazing comments from our clients. Some of the profits made by the sale of cupcakes was used as reward for students’ fun day at King Pin, where all students enjoyed a game of Bowling and Laser tag accompanied with lunch. In Term 2, we replaced the work training at Crocodylus Park with Henbury-Opportunity Knocks, continued learning at the Patch (learning to make pavers this term) and started another work training/community service at the FoodBank warehouse. Working at the FoodBank warehouse allows students to give back to the community.

We at SMS Outreach have had a great start of the year and looking forward to many more interesting events throughout the year. Have a great weekend, from Sanderson Outreach.
