New School Update

Henbury School Staff Profile
Hello, my name is Denholm. I have taken over from Pat Hills as the Henbury OSHC coordinator.
I have a background in working with children with special needs as well as experience in many other industries from customer service to health and safety.
I am currently studying nursing at Charles Darwin University but will be changing my studies to focus on Education with special needs children, as I have enjoyed working at Henbury School so much this year.
I look forward to meeting all parents and carers who have students involved in the Henbury OSHC program, and of course, doing so many fun activities with the students.

DHS 2
Our Henbury School Outreach class based at Darwin High has been concentrating on transitioning from Middle School to Senior School this semester. Our teacher is Ms Kate and our SESO is Ms Alysha. Our class members are Rachael, Despina, Gerry and Dawyte.
Our literacy and numeracy programs allowed for contribution towards the Northern Territory Certificate of Education Training.
Our major literacy focus for the semester was a novel study of ‘Blueback’ by Tim Winton. We studied this in both traditional book and ebook formats. We learned some amazing facts about sea creatures and laughed as we learnt. We all completed our first assignment which was to write a summary of this novel for our peers. This summary counted towards results for the English Modified course.
As we worked through the novel, we tested our reading and we all improved the number of words we could read and spell. We had fun interpreting words and had some awesome questions on our Wonder Wall.
Our numeracy focus was on improving our ability to do our basic skills work faster and equipping us with strategies to help with this. Our best area of maths is money. Our twice weekly fitness walks became data for a spreadsheet which will be contributing to our Maths Modified result.
In technology we learned how to make Wordles, Spreadsheets and studied Cyber Safety. Our Cyber Safety video clip made with Moviemaker won a competition.
As we begin our journey of transitioning to some form of work after year twelve, we are studying a subject called Personal Learning Program with Ms Deb. All Senior students across the Northern Territory study this subject. This subject teaches us a lot about how we learn and helps us set our future goals. We have a banking program as part of this subject and deposit money each week towards a class goal. We are on target to meeting this goal.
We returned to Henbury to study Human Growth and Development each week and worked as part of the Coffee Crew team. We have become very proficient at the jobs associated with this work and helping train other students. We can't wait to work in the new Cafe at the new Henbury.
We got to study First Aid with students from another school and enjoyed the course and the socialisation.
Each week we worked with the other Outreach class on the tile project with Ms Penny and we are looking forward to seeing our work in the overall artwork at the new Henbury. We also watched our mates in the Couch Surfing competition.
We are gradually becoming involved in out of class activities such as Despina representing DHS in basketball, Rachael contributing to the Anime Club, Dawyte and Rachael being involved in the Climate Change Challenge as members of the Henbury teams and helping out at the Science Fair.
We catered for and met with the ladies from the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program.
Individually we have started or have plans in place to start work placements and Vocational Education Studies. Dawyte has won a place to study a Certificate One in Hospitality at Taminmin next semester. Despina had a work placement at Furry Godmother. Gerry has been gaining experience at Darwin Bolts and has been studying a Retail Certificate 1 at the Henbury Op Shop.
Despina and Rachael have plans in place to gain some experience in the Childcare Industry.
All in all, we have had a very busy semester and have made an awesome start to our Senior Schooling phase.
NMS
Nightcliff Middle School Outreach has worked hard this Semester, particularly achieving great success in their Physical Education Program. All students participate in a minimum of 30 minutes continuous physical activity daily.
They play competitive sports like basketball, rugby, football and soccer. The focus for the team sports is to improve fitness, ball skills and teamwork. NMS participate in Total Recreation Sports and have learnt and practised skills for soccer, rugby and athletics.
On Thursdays they attend The Edge Gym in Casuarina where they work out with a personal trainer. The focus for these sessions is to engage the students with a variety of different training methods and equipment to work towards our class goal of being healthy, fit and strong for life. The students enjoy a variety of gym exercises, i.e. boxing, body weight exercises, free weights, weight machines, fitness circuits, treadmills and bikes.
Our outreach class participated in the NMS Sports Day. The students competed in long jump, tug of war, shot put and running races. Aaron came second in the Year 8, 100m sprint. Willis came second in the Year 7 shot put.
Gardening Crew
In term 1 the plan was to build on our succeses of previous years. By the end of term 1 we were booked out and challenged to keep up with bookings as far as Howard Springs, Palmerston and the city. The students were extremely excited and enthusiastic about the jobs and the travel to get there and back.
The students were an excellent pick of dedicated individuals. As a group the jobs completed, got great feedback.
All students who participated in the Henbury Garden Crew in Semester 1 should be proud of their achievements.
