Principal's Report

Dear Parents and Carers

School Update

The move to the new school has been a fairly smooth process. Students have settled in and enjoying learning in the new classrooms and playing at recess and lunch in the grounds. The school has sub divided the school day into one two hour sessions from start of day to recess, one two hour session from recess to lunch, with the session after lunch 1hour and 20 minutes. Recess and lunch are both 30 minutes. Students and staff have also said that this is working well. Students are having lessons in the Science and Enterprise Ed buildings. The Workshop had tools delivered this week

The kitchen farm is the last area of the school that needs lots of work. Thank you to Joan who organised the working bee. Also a big thank you to Joan who has sourced donations from Paradise Nursery, HB Blocks, Darwin City Council and Shoal Bay. Joan is waiting for more donations (seeds, seedlings, fruit trees, etc.) from other community stakeholders in the coming in weeks. If you have any donations for the garden, then please ring Joan at school. Thank you also to staff and their families who came along on Saturday to load the aggregate, soil, dig holes for the trees and plant fruit trees.

School Review

The school review was held 23 and 24 March. The outcomes of the review will be included in each newsletter. Included this week are Domain 1: An Explicit Improvement Agenda and Domain 2: Analysis and Discussion of Data. This data will be used when writing the Strategic Improvement Plan towards the end of the year.

Congratulations

On behalf of the school community I would like to congratulate the following staff and wish them all the best. Thalia Kouros in the Teaching in the Territory Excellence Awards in the Support Worker of the year section. Joan Ocampo has been nominated in the ASG's National Excellence in Teaching Awards (NEiTA).

Greetings from Purple 4 class

P4 has had an exciting start to Term 3, discovering and exploring our new school environment. We're enjoying our spacious classroom, especially being able to continue with cooking healthy meals in our own new kitchen. Our Commbox. is a fantastic addition too – we watch interesting Powerpoint presentations, programs and practice our Literacy and Numeracy skills. Margy, our fitness instructor, now visits the school to continue with our gym session in the school hall. We have also joined the Rising Stars basketball program and are looking forward to playing in the competition at Marrara on Fridays. Over the past few weeks, we've been practicing our basketball skills in the hall. We've been making sketches of various scenes around our beautiful school grounds and out in the community - learning to observe detail and use different drawing techniques.

Our class has also started Coffee Crew training, becoming confident with using the barista machine and cooking delicious scones. We've had some interesting Community access visits and participated in some hands-on activities at the Careers Expo held at the Convention Centre. Enjoy the rest of Term 3 – Geoff, Daniel, Malakai, Jeremy and DJ. Here are some snapshots from our busy start to Semester 2:

PURPLE 5 (FORMALLY KNOWN AS G1)

It has been a busy start to the new Semester. First we moved into our wonderful new school and settled into our new beautifully situated classroom. We lost Robbie, who moved into an outreach class after successfully transitioning into Dripstone and welcomed a new student into our class, William. We also welcomed back Pete as our classroom SESO, who returned to Henbury from paternity leave. The students have adjusted very well to all these changes.

We have been working on a Unit of Work entitled Responsibilities. This integrated body of work discusses the importance of students being advocates for their own life. Encouraging them to make good choices in school both socially and academically to enable them to achieve their goals and gain desired employment after leaving school.

For the last five weeks we have been focussing on healthy lifestyle choices. Covering subjects such as: diet; physical activity; good mental health; water consumption; healthy sleep patterns; hygiene/personal grooming; clean living (the effects of drugs and alcohol); relaxation and overall wellbeing.

Every Monday we participate in a circuit session with Margy from Margy's Gym. On Tuesdays the students attend Clontarf sessions in the hall during lunch and work on sports skills and coordination. On Wednesdays we attend Total Rec lessons on the Oval and play team sports with the whole school. Every Thursday we go to The Shack and play basketball, table tennis, snooker, darts and jam in the music room. This is a great way for the boys to socialise and unwind with each other off the school grounds. It helps promote turn taking, team work, coordination and bonding. On Friday's we do a fitness session which includes warm ups, stretches, jogging and sprinting/races. Each student runs and has their times recorded – they strive to improve on their personal best times. Afterwards we have a cooked brunch and sit together and eat as a class.
