Clean Up Australia Day
On Thursday, 2nd of March, Henbury School joined the nation in participating in “Clean Up Australia Day”. Our classes were encouraged to join the “School Clean Up Day” which is a great way to teach students our school value of being responsible, that can be practiced by taking care of our environment. Clean Up Australia Organisation sent us kits with bags and gloves that were used for the clean up. Students were expected to help in picking, collecting and disposing rubbish that they found around their classroom, the school grounds, nearby footpath and carpark.

Informal Mum's Lunch
It is a very informal gathering of mums who discuss their experiences and expectations, but are after a familiar support and knowledge from a family perspective. You can come for 30 minutes or stay for 2+ hours. Some new mums have found such common ground that they have stayed for 3 hours. Pay for own meals and drinks, but if you don’t want either, no problem, just take a seat and join us. Give it a try!!

Greetings from Purple 5
In Purple 5 we have 5 students who are all new to Henbury campus this year. Their names are Toby, Isaiah, Enrique, Harrison, and Faisal. Harrison has moved here from Brisbane, and Faisal from Adelaide. So far this term, we have been busy getting to know one another, and focussing on learning our school values of Respect, Care and Compassion, Teamwork, Resilience, and Responsibility.
We are looking forward to an exciting term with basketball, swimming, library visits, Science, Literacy, Maths, Art, and much more!
Enrique demonstrated Care and Compassion helping Harrison to lift the bowling ball onto the ramp at Planet Tenpin.
We are looking forward
to a busy and
productive year!

CSC 2
It’s been an exciting start to the year. Saxon is doing Art and ‘How to run your own business’ with CSC and he says they’re both awesome. Richard and Shamus are studying Music and are learning about the great classical composers of the Romance Period. Richard is also continuing his VET Hairdressing. Byron and Brandon are attending SEDA so we only see them for Maths and English. In English we are reading Deadly Unna by Phillip Gwynne. I wonder if Byron and Brandon are like the two main characters in the novel. Can’t wait to find out. We’re looking forward to a great year.
Greetings from Purple 4 class
This year we have welcomed 4 students: Julio, Lorenzo, Hugo and John with Malakai continuing in our class. We have all been getting to know each other through discussions on our favourite activities, curriculum subjects and food we like. Participating in fitness sessions keeps us fit, strong and healthy. These programs include our weekly gym fitness circuit with P3 and P5 and we are looking forward to being part of a team in the Rising Stars basketball competition. In Week 3, we attended ‘taster sessions’ for Work Training. This has helped us when completing our Going for Goals! workbook to identify our goals for this year, how to achieve them and strategies to use to overcome difficulties . So far this Term, we have been to the Museum, the Waterfront and to the Library at Parliament House for our community access visits. We also visited Casuarina Library with P5 and had an interesting story read by one of the librarians. Before returning to school, each student borrowed a chapter book to take back for our afternoon individual reading session.

CSC 1
Welcome to Week 5 from CSC1! We have relocated into a fabulous new room at Casuarina Senior College with plenty of space to move and complete our Modified NTCET studies. This year, students are completing Stage 2 subjects in English, Maths, Art and Health and Physical Education.
With 6 of our 9 students ready to complete Year 12 this year, we are excited to be undertaking a variety of new Work Experience and VETis opportunities in addition to our academic studies.
These fine young people are also looking forward to being involved in their TEAP meetings this week and to assist in developing their personal and educational goals for 2017.
In the gallery below are some photos from our Friday Fitness, Cooking and Maths programs. Each Thursday students use the CSC canteen kitchen to cook a healthy meal. On Friday, students tally their results with exercises related to endurance, flexibility and strength. Students have also been putting their brains through a workout, using scales to calculate measurements for a 3D model of their dream bedroom!
We hope you have a wonderful week and look forward to updating you on our progress and achievements throughout the year!

Introducing the Visible Learning Monthly Newsletter Update
Hello! We are the Henbury Visible Learning Coaches – Brenda Moore, Raylee Parker, Lauren Hofmeyer and Janelle Welch. We will be keeping you up to date with all things Visible Learning through a monthly newsletter instalment.
Visible Learning is all about good teaching and learning practices and has been rolled out in all Northern Territory Schools. It involves 5 strands:
- The Visible Learning School
- Inspired and passionate teachers
- The Visible Learner
- Effective Feedback
- Know thy Impact
This year part of Henbury’s focus is to further develop the Effective Feedback stream. What does this look like around the school? As well as ongoing feedback between students and staff throughout the day, each classroom is ending their school day with an afternoon reflection/feedback session. This looks very different across our varied classrooms. However things you may see and hear being discussed are:
- What did you learn today?
- What are you most of proud today?
- How did you feel during your ______ lesson?
- What did you find challenging?
- When did you use a positive Mindframe?
- What strategies did you use in your learning?
- How did you work towards achieving your goals?
These reflection sessions help students take ownership over their learning and give vital feedback to staff about students’ learning and progress, and their own teaching practices. These are great questions for parents and carers to also ask your student after their day at school.
The types of strategies teachers and SESOs are using in these reflection sessions are as different as our classes! Take a look at some of our reflection sessions in action!
Students in Blue 2 may have |
Throughout the day |
In CSC1 Outreach students complete their daily learning journal. Students then discuss and then answer individually the following questions “Something I am proud of...” / “Something I have learned...”
Purple 4 students take turns asking each other reflective questions. The students have become very good at thinking about their learning and sharing their success and challenges with each other.
