Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program
Next week (May 16 and 17), Henbury School will be hosting the Regional Skills Networking Event for Northern Territory Schools involved in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program (SAKGP). School representatives from different schools around the NT will be visiting Henbury together with specialists from the National SAKG Foundation Team. Our school farm, horticulture building and the café will be used as training facilities by around 60 educators around the region. This two day workshop is available as a Professional Development programme for teachers who wish to join the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Community and it will provide the opportunity to collaborate nationally with other teachers, staff, volunteers and specialists around the country involved in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program. It will be a day full of aromatic experience in the kitchen and engaging activities in the garden.
Charles Darwin University Student visit
Once again Henbury School hosted a visit from Bachelor of Education students from CDU. Students were amazed at how engaged our students were with their learning, and the enormous range of programs offered. Students also commented on the passion of the teachers whom they observed in action.
Staffing
Selection Panels are currently in progress to decide Special Education support positions for next semester and we welcome to our school a new teacher Tamlyn Butler who has come to us from NSW. When our second Senior teacher position is decided Tamlyn will take over that class for the remainder of the term. A big welcome to Tamlyn.
School Council
Henbury School Council has filled the final vacant position and we welcome Helen Balatero to Council. Congratulations on your election Helen.
HEAD Space concern surrounding 13 reasons Why on Netflix
Recently a number of students have accessed at home a series called '13 Reasons Why' on Netflix. Please find in this Newsletter a guide from Headspace in relation to '13 Reasons Why'. This series deals with adolescent issues and suicide. I encourage you to monitor your child’s viewing activities. If you support your child to watch this series, I strongly encourage you or an appropriate adult either watch the show with them or engage in a conversation with them about the show. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you wish to discuss this or any other matter further. For those who receive this newsletter electronically please click on the link below on how to talk to your young person about the show.

Hello from Nightcliff Middle School Outreach
Nightcliff Outreach welcomed a new class member, Matthias. Aaron and Willis helped Matthias with his transition from Primary to Middle School. All three students participate in NMS Health and Physical Education classes. They engage in physical sport sessions and theory classes on a weekly basis. Willis and Aaron chose to continue with Garden Crew this year for work training. Matthias joined the Sanderson Middle School Outreach crew in the Woodwork room to commence his work training at Henbury. We had another amazing season competing in the Rising Star Basketball Competition in Semester 1. Our team, Tiger Sharks showed great teamwork and continue to improve their basketball skills.
Yellow 5
We have had a great start to the year and the first term flew by! The students have adjusted very well to their new class and are getting along with each other. This year we welcomed back Jai, Ben, Scott, Samantha, Amanda, Breeanna and Jye (part time CSC) along with Tiler who is starting his first year at Henbury.
We have been working on an Integrated Unit of Work this semester entitled ‘Self Esteem’ it has been a great way to get to know more about each other and encourage a level of acceptance and understanding. Students have been discussing healthy mind/healthy bodies to encourage making good lifestyle choices. We have been working on pieces of art that reflect our emotions and represent our personality. The students are currently working on a Coat of Arms/Shield that represents their likes and values.
The students have been busy with their regular classroom program as well as various work training placements (Crocodylus Park, Gardening Crew, Hairdressing Salon); Rising Stars Basketball (Amanda and Tiler); NTCIS – Auto at Kormilda College (Scott); CSC Clontaf (Jye); The Shack and community access on Fridays.
