Assistant Principal’s Report
Parents/Carers
Week 8 completed, isn’t it amazing how fast this term is going, just 2 more weeks of school, and all of the Henbury School community will have a long deserved break.
Progress reports
Our Progress reports are almost completed and will be available for parental viewing at the end of term.
Staffing
Selection Panels have finished deliberations on the Special Education support positions for next semester and we congratulate our newly appointed permanent Special Education Support Officers. Lesley Scharnberg, Grace Doughty, Leanne Chalker, Nichole Ansell, Maddy Ingham, and Gary Swadiki. Temporary positions: Damien Fuller, Anne-marie Davis, Claudia Hamlin, Meena Ghimire, and Angus bird.
School Camp
School camp is occurring 9-11 August and numerous notes have been sent home with various requests. Parents/carers, please return permission forms back as soon as possible. Forms can either be returned to the front office, or to your child’s teacher. It would be most helpful also if you could please advise your child’s teacher or the front office that your child will definitely not be attending camp. This will help us to work out accommodation dormitories, buses and food requirements.
Once students have returned their permission forms to school, parent/carers will then receive a further 3 documents – cover letter explaining payments, medications and what to and what not to bring on camp, the Medication Administration Record Form, if required, and the What to Bring form. Webster Packed medications (including over the counter medications) and Medical Administration Record Forms need to be returned by the end of Week 10.
Please make payment by the end of term, or contact your child’s teacher or the front office to discuss payment arrangements.
Nemarluk students
Once again we will be welcoming Year 6 Nemarluk students on to our campus next semester to begin their transition process for 2018. Students will be arriving from recess and slotting into their different classes. Time on campus will gradually increase over of the semester.
Special Needs buses non travel notification
A reminder to all parents that the school is the first point of contact for all transport queries. Please only contact Buslink for short term notices i.e the morning of the sickness or absence. For any other reason your child may not need to travel on the bus, please contact the school, not Buslink.
New Higer School Bus
Our new bus has arrived, courtesy of funds raised through HCL and other grants. It is a modified 28 seat bus, with all the usual mod cons. The best thing about it is that it has facilities to take four wheelchairs at the same time, as well as 10 other people, giving Henbury School the capacity to take an entire High support class on community access at the same time.

HELLO from Purple 2
This Term the young men in Purple 2 have been working very hard in all areas of their learning. We have a few updates to share with you!
This Term our Community Access has allowed us to experience a range of new environments. While out in the community we have been focusing on safety awareness and exposure to using money effectively. Some of the places that we liked best include going for a walk along the Waterfront to see the fish, having a drink from the Cool Spot and enjoying recess at the Coffee Club.
An engine room has started to be introduced at Henbury this Term. An engine room is a safe space which allows students to reset their engines to low, high or just right through interaction with a range of equipment. The equipment and activities aim to encourage an increased awareness of their own bodies in space. More about the engine room will come at a later date in the newsletter! Purple 2 have enjoyed entering the engine room to engage in a variety of movements which have helped us to concentrate when returning to our classroom to complete busy work.
This Term Fu Seng and Deacon have attended work experience at the Op Shop. Each week they both look forward to work experience. Fu Seng has great fine motor skills and enjoys cutting buttons off shirts ready to be recycled. Deacon enjoys hanging items of clothing out for the customers to see. After spending some time working at the Op Shop, Deacon and Fu Seng will move on to try other places for work experience to increase their knowledge and skills out in the workforce.
This Semester we have looked at Dreamtime Stories as a focus for our visual arts. Some of the different stories we have looked at include ‘Why Koala has a stumpy tail’, ‘Girawu the goanna’ and ‘Mirram the kangaroo and Warren the wombat’. We have looked at a variety of different Aboriginal artworks and experimented with different techniques. We have created a wonderful wall of artwork in our classroom using the ‘dot painting’ technique.
Purple 3
Wow, how fast did Term 2 disappear? Students’ in Purple 3 have had an extremely busy term. We’ve learnt about landscapes through our cross curricula unit of work. In Mathematics we’ve loved the hands on activities from the Meaningful Maths Program. We’re having success in using two digit numbers and learning to tell the time.
Physically we are fit, having joined with other Purple 2 to access Margy’s Gym, Rising Stars Basketball with Blue 4 and swimming in the school pool. We love that the pool is heated and we can continue with swimming even when the weather is cooling down. Joining with other classes to play team activities on Wednesday mornings is another highlight and demonstrates the school values of Teamwork and Respect.
We pride ourselves on eating well and looking after our body from the inside out. We cook every Tuesday, after shopping on Monday’s. A typical week’s menu includes plenty of fresh foods cooked to our liking. Moussaka, Shepherd’s Pie, Bassa Nuggets and Potato Wedges and Scrolls are some of the menu items we have enjoyed making and eating. We continue to learn kitchen safety processes.
A focus in our learning has been making items for sale as part of our Enterprise Education Project, Greeting cards and Coasters. These items are available for purchase from the School Office and Opportunity Knocks for a nominal fee.
Cheers from the Staff and Students of Purple 3
