Crewz’n and Brew Coffee Trailer was at the Millions Paws Walk last Saturday. A massive thank you to Felicity, Aly, Leizl, Mat and Lauren for supporting our Crewz'n Brew team on the weekend at RSPCA's 'Million Paws Walk', held at Jingili Water Gardens. You guys are AMAZING!! It was an extremely successful event with over 300 Coffees/Frappes being sold. The feedback from our customers was really positive also! Salty Plum Events who organised the walk were so impressed by the professionalism of our team that they have asked us if we would be interested in catering at their future events. A special thank you to DMS and SMS for making delicious slice and cupcakes for us to sell. Thank you to Nim and Rod McKay for supporting our team on Sunday too.

Next Saturday afternoon Crewz'n Brew will be setting up at The Foster Carers Association Car Boot Sale at the Lyons Community Centre from 1:30 – 3:30pm.

The Coffee Trailer will get a new face lift by the end of term. Staff are working with Natasha from Red Mouse Designs and designs for the new logo and wrap for the Trailer is nearly completed.

Raylee Parker will be Acting Senior Teacher 1 for the remainder of this term. Tamlyn Butler will be backfilling Raylee.

Hello from Green 4

Term two already and like everyone else we’ve been busy. G4 consists of five intelligent and diverse teenagers, two of which are in year 12; Peter and Jonathan, one in year 10; Nathan, and two in year 9; Jeffrey and Manoli. Our senior students are focussed on their transition from school and are progressing nicely. Jonathan is working at HPA AusDesigns and with the Henbury Garden Crew, Peter is developing new skills in Sensational Designs and Nathan is continuing to develop his skills in bakery and hospitality with the Coffee Crew. Jonathan and Nathan completed a VETis Certificate 1 Bakery course last term and we are extremely proud of their achievements.

A major focus in G4 is communication. Our students need to be able to understand and be understood. We regularly have conversations discussing our likes, dislikes, needs and wants focussing on effectiveness. If a message is not understood students are taught to find alternative ways to communicate their message effectively. In English, students are learning about the key elements of a story through a unit of work on Movie Studies. By exploring the films “Ratatouille” and “The Croods”, students are learning about characters, settings, problems and solutions with a focus on descriptive language.

Mathematics is another major focus for G4, each week students learn about money in relation to their weekly excursion. Students are learning to recognise the right notes and coins to use in a transaction, as well as the appropriate steps and effective communication when ordering and paying for an item or activity. So far students have ordered and payed for a game of bowling or arcade at Kingpin and an ice-cream, sorbet or drink from The Foreshore Café. During these excursions students also develop appropriate social skills and awareness of recreation and leisure activities within our community. The rest of our week is filled with lessons on sensory exploration and play, fitness and strength with a personal trainer, current affairs in news media, work skills, Arts and crafts, IT skills, life skills including shopping, menu planning, cooking and food prepping.

Staff profile – Darlene Devery

Hello! Thank you everyone for the warm welcome to Henbury!

My name is Darlene Devery, I am a Kalkadoon Woman, who has been raised in the ‘Top End’ of the Northern Territory. I have three children, 8, 10 and 22, and a 4 year old granddaughter, all of whom have been born in Darwin. My maternal great grandmother originates from the ‘Alyawarre’desert people of Central Australia, the Aboriginal Community of Alpurrurulam (also known as Lake Nash).

For generations before me, my mother, grandmother and great grandmother were a part of the ‘Stolen Generation’, my great grandmother was removed from the Alpurrurulam Aboriginal Community, my grandmother from Katherine, and my mother from Darwin. My mother was relocated to the Croker Island Catholic Mission and was eventually fostered by her House-Mother, Margaret Somerville, returning to live with her in Sydney, and returning to Darwin as an adult.

I have worked in various government departments and private organisations primarily in the legal and community services fields, including NT Legal Aid, NT Police, QLD Corrections, Centrelink, and Department of Education. I have been involved in the establishment of Community Justice Programs in Central Queensland, and working with Aboriginal youth and their families to make sure our young people are undertaking opportunities and getting appropriate support to make sure that happens.

My early years were spent living in buffalo catching camps in remote Arnhem Land in the late 1970’s. I got my education via 2-way radio with Katherine School of the Air, before moving to Humpty Doo (where my family still lives) when I was old enough to attend high school. I am an Indigenous Artist who is keen to share my knowledge, an active community member, part of the Elders in Schools Program and passionate about making positive and sustained changes and empowering community.

CDU Gym review by Dominic (CSC3)

The equipment is tidy and neat. It is clean. The staff are friendly and helpful. Really clean toilets. Good lockers. It is quite with space to move and there is plenty of parking. The temperature is just right.
