Principal’s Report
Camp at Batchelor Outdoor Education Centre
Week 4 is already upon us and it feels like the term just started. Last week we went to Batchelor Outdoor Education Centre Wednesday through to Friday. This was our biggest ever School camp with an average 75 students in attendance. This was an exceptionally well organised camp with some of our High support students staying overnight for the first time. Naturally for this to happen staff were exceptionally well prepared for all eventualities.
Students and staff alike went home with extremely full stomachs from the wonderful catering team Raylee and Sarah who kept everyone fed. Some students and staff commenting regularly when told it is meal time, “but we’ve just eaten” which is a fantastic vote of confidence in our chefs.
Students were accommodated in dormitory style rooms with some students spending a night away from home for the first time. The Batchelor Outdoor Education centre staff were also fantastic in their provision of specialised activities for our students. These activities included Rock Climbing, High Ropes, Low Ropes, Archery, Flying Fox and Bike riding. The staff at Batchelor passed on that they found our students delightful to work with and some of the young volunteers from Batchelor Area School were competing with each other to do so. Our own Henbury Staff provided other activities, such as whip cracking, Bush tucker walks with food and painting as well as trampoline. Students also delighted in torch spotlighting, damper making and roasting marshmallows around the camp fire.
This year we have implemented a new student award for Leadership. The inaugural winner for this year was Jye Naismith for his exceptional leadership in the area of whip cracking instruction, screen printing and general mentoring role of other students. Well done Jye. His award will be presented at the next assembly.
A huge congratulations and thankyou to all staff for their efforts whilst on camp, and especially our camp organisers Raylee Parker and Janelle Welch.
Special thanks to Casuarina Senior College Clontarf Academy for loaning us an extra bus on the first day and driving it as well, this certainly helped us out, (avoiding a second trip). A huge thankyou also to Mr Shylash Prasad for loaning us his truck which enabled us to take all of the student luggage down and back, eliminating the need for trailers. Once again thankyou.
Please see the great collection of camp photos below…….

Welcoming Andrea
Andrea White has been teaching in Darwin since 2011, almost exclusively in Special Education settings. After completing her Masters and having her daughter in 2013 she returned to the classroom and was given the opportunity to work with students at Palmerston Senior College, Special Education Centre who were working towards completing their Modified NTCET certificates, a challenge. Andrea took some time off in 2016, returning to her native Philippines, but is now back and looking forward to taking over from Deb Hall for the term working with students at Casuarina Senior College.
At present she lives in Zuccoli with her three year old and three cacti
School Perception surveys
School perception surveys are now open for parents to complete. This is a valuable feedback tool for Henbury School to gauge an idea of how we are performing as a school. Students, parents and staff all have the opportunity to complete this survey, and therefore provide the well needed feedback for us. Could do survey at School- Will send out paper copies

Family Night 24 August
This year our family night has changed a little. Due to the great feedback we had from the Halloween disco last year, we have decided to incorporate one into family night, this will run from 6-8pm. Classes will contribute by making a curry and opening their classroom for visitors from 5-6pm. Family night will be held on the evening of the 24th August. Information flyers will be sent home with students. Drinks will be available for sale to raise money for the Year 12 graduation dinner, and their will also be stalls selling student’s enterprise wares.
Science Week (This week) Friday, 18th of August- HENBURY SCHOOL SCIENCE FAIR
This event was a fantastic opportunity for students to be involved with through actively engaging students in various activities/projects. The school theme for this year’s Science Fair was “Future Earth” which was aimed at encouraging the general public, most particularly, younger people to become fascinated by the world in which we live. It also aimed to encourage positive collective action to take direct contribution to the Earth becoming more sustainable. Please see next newsletter for photos of Science week.

Blue 4
Blue 4 have started Semester 2 with a very positive attitude; with a lot of respect and resilience being shown by everyone. In Term 3, we welcomed Roxanne into the class. Roxanne moved from Purple 3 to Blue 4. The students have been very kind to Roxanne and have enjoyed showing her the ropes.
Roxanne enjoying the yummy food at camp!
While learning to cook students have been working on budgeting, wants and needs, Money Maths, shopping, measuring and time. Students are becoming more and more independent in the kitchen and are showing a great understanding of kitchen safety and hygiene. By learning time and numbers we are able to produce an eatable dish with no burnt or raw bits.

Week 3 was especially exciting with school camp happening at Bachelor Outdoor Education Centre. There was a lot of talking, questions and laughing during the bus ride to camp. When at camp everyone enjoyed doing the numerous activities that were offered at camp.

Blue 4 love to Party, and we were fortunate enough to have been invited to Johnathon’s birthday party in Green 4. It was a lot of fun and we enjoyed dancing to Just Dance and eating a yummy cake.

Green 1
As per usual, time has been flying by in Green 1 and we have been super busy in and out of our classroom. School camp was held last week, and from all reports of those who attended a great time was had by everyone! The girls tell me that archery, bike riding and rock climbing were their favourite activities. Please keep an eye out on class DOJO in the coming weeks for some photos of the girls at camp. We continue to swim each week, this semester we have joined forces with Yellow 3. We are learning aqua aerobics, water safety and continue to work on our swimming strokes. This week for our class excursion we will be visiting the Royal Flying Doctor Service at Darwin wharf. The class is very excited to learn about this service in an interactive and fun manner. We would also like to visit one of the Darwin Festival lunchbox shows in the city while the festival is on, and in September the 360 degree cinema will be in town for the International Film Festival. We are looking forward to some new cultural learning around Darwin. In class, the girls have been working hard on their literacy and numeracy. It is wonderful to see the class working collaboratively on tasks and helping each other out when needed. They are certainly becoming more confident and independent. Each Wednesday morning we have been participating in Total Recreation. This girls have learnt different athletic and ball game skills. Sessions will be recommencing this week and we are excited to see what new skills we can learn this term!
