BOOMERANG BAGS

In Term 3, a group of our students got involved with an organisation called Boomerang Bags. In our schools fight to save and be kinder to our environment we thought this would be a valid project to be part of. As well as this, it is a great opportunity to further our students work skills using design and technology.

What is Boomerang Bags? Boomerang Bags is a community driven movement started to tackle the problem of plastic pollution, especially the use of plastic shopping bags. People often leave their reusable bags at home, forgetting to take them when doing the shopping. Boomerang Bags are free bags for the public to use in these circumstances.

What is a Boomerang Bag? It is a reusable shopping bag made from recycled materials, by members of the community. In our case, by students, staff and family members / carers.

How are we involved? A group of students, staff and parents come together each week to create new bags from recycled / donated materials. These bags each have a pocket showing it is a Boomerang Bag created by Henbury students. We are in the process of approaching various shops at Casuarina Village, to partner with us in the fight against plastic bags.

How you can get involved?

  • If you enjoy sewing and would love to support us in creating these bags, we would love the support. Once the bags are out in the community, the demand for a great supply will grow.
  • If you have fabric that you think would be suitable and you would like to donate, that would be greatly appreciated.
  • If you own a business that would like to have a basket of Boomerang Bags, we would appreciate that support too.

GREEN 4

Term four already, and for one of our great students it will be their last term at Henbury School. Jonathan is graduating and we are going to miss him dearly. Over the next couple of weeks he will be increasing his work training days from two to four and will be working at Cash for Cans, HPA and the Henbury Garden Crew. Jonathan is ready and eager to enter the workforce and we are all extremely proud of his achievements.

We have achieved many great accomplishments in 2017. All five students have made significant progress on their T/EAP goals, in particular with their communication and social and emotional well-being.

Some exciting achievements:

  • Throughout Term 3, Green 4 have visited the Darwin Central Café to order a juice. All five students learnt how to independently order their juice, pay for and wait for their change. Peter communicated with PECS, Jonathan communicated with PODD, Nathan communicated with P2G and Jeffrey and Manoli communicated verbally.
  • In week 9 of Term 3, Green 4 were invited to H Hotel for a tour and a sit down lunch. After checking out all the great features of the hotel Jonathan, Manoli, Nathan and Jeffrey each independently ordered their lunch using their many forms of communication modes (PECS, PODD, P2G and verbal language). They were exceptionally well mannered and behaved like true gentlemen.
  • Green 4 have been tirelessly working on a dance routine to perform at HCL. We’ve finally finished the choreography and perfected our moves. We are now working on costumes and learning to perform in front of an audience. We hope to see you there.
  • In Term 3 Green 4 started taking Zumba Fitness lessons and we absolutely love it. Sarah from ‘To The Beat’ is our instructor and she gets everyone up and moving. We are working on a performance to showcase our skills.
  • Peter is using the sewing equipment safely and successfully with minimal support in Sensational Designs. Annemarie was very impressed when he was able to almost perfectly hem a pair of trousers.
  • Manoli and Jeffrey have started work experience at Opportunity Knocks. Jeffrey is very quickly learning to serve customers and use the till. Manoli is working on sorting donations.
  • Nathan and Peter have started work experience at RDA. They are learning how to care for the horses, completing jobs including cleaning out the stalls and mixing feeds.
  • Jeffrey has joined Nathan at the coffee crew and they are both doing an amazing job. They are learning to bake banana bread and make coffee. Nathan has started waiting tables on a Friday recess.

NMS HENBURY SCHOOL

Welcome from NMS Henbury Outreach!

Term 4 is already in full swing for NMS Outreach. The students have continued Garden Crew in Term 4. They have a strong work ethic and although the weather is more humid, it doesn’t alter the fantastic effort they put in. During Bucketmusic, they are practising for a performance that will be shown at the Term 4 End of Year assembly. The music group continues to integrate with 3 students from Nightcliff Middle School during lessons. They are displaying more skill and precision with every lesson! Nightcliff has also joined with Sanderson Outreach on Tuesdays to get FIT! We complete a fitness circuit that incorporates cardiovascular and strength training. The students are learning to practise a Growth Mindset attitude, to be challenged, to get FIT and to learn exercises and modifications to different fitness levels.

Enjoy the rest of Term 4! We will!

EARN & LEARN

Our school collected 6 497 Earn & Learn stickers. Our school was able to purchase 6kg of Kinetic sand and a Dominoes class pack. Thank you to all that handed in stickers.
