PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Parents/Carers

Welcome back to the 2018 school year. We have 30 new enrolments for 2018, so a big welcome to all the new families.

New Staff

This year we welcome Jason Love at DMS1, Ruth Caddy at NMS, Andrea White at CSC1, Jane Mercer in Purple 3 and Katie Cole in Blue 2.

Acquaintance Afternoon

Acquaintance Afternoon will be Thursday 22 February. On campus classes will be open from 4:30-5:30. There will also be a free Sausage Sizzle BBQ. Come along and see your child’s classroom and meet the teacher.

Outreach times will be sent home later in the week.

Nutrition and Community Access Programs

Nutrition programs and excursions out and about in the community are based on student contributions towards the purchase of food and cost for transport/venues. These programs are integral to teaching life skills in menu planning, nutritional value of food, shopping, meal preparation and involvement in activities within the community. These programs are voluntary. The costs for 2018 are $27.50/week for Nutrition and $8.50/week for Community Access excursions. Therefore a total of $36/week. Payments can be made via direct debit, cash, cheque, EFTPOS and Basics Card. Centrelink payment plans are also available. Please phone the school for more information.

Students who don’t participate in the nutrition program will need to bring their own food to school.

Please note that each student is required to pay the excursion cost of $8.50 per week. This covers the cost of entry into various community access sites, where a cost is required. If you have any questions please contact your child’s teacher. Students cannot access these programs if they still have outstanding money from 2017.

Back to School Voucher, Sports Voucher and Voluntary Contributions

The Northern Territory Government Back to School Voucher is $150. This money has to be acquitted by the end of Term 1. Parents/carers need to come into the Front Office and see Thalia and she will be able to help you with school uniforms, book packs, hygiene and grooming packs, camping or excursion fees. Parents need to state what they wish this voucher to be used for.

The Sports Voucher is $100, available twice a year.

Voluntary Student contributions are $80.00/year. The school has EFTPOS facilities and these voluntary contributions can be paid at the Front Office.

Student ID Card

Any replacement ID Cards will cost $10 per card.

T/EAP Meetings

EAP and TEAP meetings will run 19 February to 9 March. Classroom teachers will be making contact to organise a time for parents/carers to meet with the teacher to discuss 2018 individual student’s goals. Timeslots are tight with relief staff booked to enable teachers to meet during the week. The timetable allows some changes but not many.

School Council

The Annual General Meeting will be Thursday 8 March, commencing at 5pm, in the Conference Room at Henbury. This meeting will be followed by a General Meeting. If you are interested in becoming a parent member please come along. School Council does have vacant positions that need to be filled.

STAFF PROFILE – RUTH CADDY

Here I am at Nightcliff Middle School Outreach classroom with Alysha Tizzoni and a group of delightful students.

I came up from Victoria seven years ago and I am hooked and here for good! I love the weather and getting out travelling and camping around the territory. I began life as a PE teacher and I returned to teaching 11 years ago as a special education teacher after 20 years working in sales, hospitality and mental health. Over the past seven years in the Territory I have experienced a variety of areas of teaching from special education, primary to textiles and food technology secondary, to Learning Support at senior level. It is lovely to return to the middle school age and the excitement and enthusiasm that comes with it. If I am not in the classroom you will see me walking or cycling along the foreshore or at home on the sewing machine creating garments.

STAFF PROFILE – JASON LOVE

Hello my name is Jason Love. I will be working in one of the outreach classes at Dripstone Middle School this year. Last year I was the Health and P.E. teacher at Gray Primary School. I moved to Darwin in October 2016 from Geelong, Victoria, where I was a Special Education teacher for 11 years. My hobbies include playing baseball, listening to music, reading and writing stories.

STAFF PROFILE – JANE MERCER

Thank you for the warm welcome to Henbury this year. This term has already been a whirlwind!

My name is Jane-Louise Mercer. I grew up in Port Lincoln, a fishing and wheat town on the pointy triangle tip of South Australia. After school I moved to Adelaide where I studied teaching at the University of Adelaide. After I spent some time travelling around South East Asia, I took my first teaching position in 2015 at Ceduna Area School on the edge of the Nullarbor Plain. Here I found my awareness and passion for Special Education, while building some relationships with students which will be lifelong. I also met my partner, a lucky bonus!

Last year we moved to Darwin for my partner to continue study at Charles Darwin University, while I found a teaching position in Palmerston. Last year I attended the Australian Association of Special Education as an Early Career Scholarship Winner and enjoyed networking while taking in new research and teaching methods. This year I’ve been given the opportunity to work at Henbury School and am excited and enthusiastic about the journey ahead.

It’s not all work though, I have a strong sweet tooth and passion for baking. Last Christmas I was away from my family which gave me the excuse to make my great-grandmother’s Christmas pudding!

IMMUNISATION CALENDAR
