ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Parents/Carers

Hi and welcome to Week 6 newsletter

Well, school has been off to a busy start this year. Not only have we increased enrolments but we have increased and redesigned our Skill Set programs for our Year 7’s – Year 9’s. Every Tuesday students attend either a single or double block of Skills Sets, preparing them for Work Training in Years 10-12. Skills Sets we operate this year include: Bike maintenance, Woodwork, SENSE-ational Designs – including Screen printing and sewing, Retail, Hospitality, Horticulture and Hairdressing.

All Middle School students will participate in one of these each term/Semester and they will then know what they like or don’t like for the future.

Our Senior students are busy doing either skill sets or Cert I’s in Automotive, Agrifoods, Bakery, Barista, Hairdressing and Retail. So, you can see how the Middle School programs flow into Senior School!

Queen’s Baton Relay

Last Friday, 2nd March, we had the honour of having The Queen’s Baton Relay run through our school. One of our Senior students, Igen carried the baton through the school and handed it off to a long time carer. The students and staff were proud to be a part of such a prestigious event. Afterwards the Queen’s Baton Relay staff and representatives stayed to have lunch, which was prepared by our amazing Coffee Crew.

PossiABILITIES expo

The PossABILITIES Expo is back for 2018! We have invited a number of businesses and organisations from the disability sector and beyond to provide information for students, families and carers around the support services, post-school options, accommodation, social connections and financial support available for people with disabilities. This event will be held in the Henbury School Hall on Thursday the 22nd March, between 2.00pm and 6.30pm. There will also be a number of break-out information sessions around adult guardianship and NDIS. For more information, please contact Lauren Hofmeyer, Acting Senior Teacher Transition and Pathways.

T/EAP meetings and report backs

Thank you to all the parents/carers for attending all the T/EAP meetings that have been happening over the past 3 weeks. 135 meetings done! The planning document will be sent home in Week 10/11. Please take the time to read it and also please feel free to write on them if you feel something has been missed. Don’t forget to send them back to school signed.

Reports will be sent home at the end of Term 2 and will include all academic subjects, such as English, Maths, Science etc.

NDIA/NDIS

April 4th there will be a forum including representatives from NDIA, NDIS and Darwin Community Legal Services at Henbury School. It will held in the Hall after school. A time to be announced. We strongly urge parents to come as many of our students will need to transition to NDIS in July. These representatives will give you information on how to start, who to see and what to do. It is REALLY important for parents to come.

Have Your Say: Supporting Students with Additional Needs

8 March 2018

The Territory Labor Government is undertaking a review of policies and practices for Students with Additional Needs attending NT Government schools, and wants you to have your say.

Minister for Education, Eva Lawler, said the review is part of an election promise to invest in supporting students with additional needs.

“We want all children to have access to a quality education and the review’s findings will inform improvements that lead our schools to be at the forefront of inclusive schooling,” Ms Lawler said.

“We recently opened the Mimik-Ga Centre in Wanguri to provide extra support to families who have children with additional needs and we’ve expanded a range of support services for students. Last year we also launched a scholarship that helps teachers complete a Graduate Certificate in Education (Special Education).

“We want to discuss what else we can do to provide more support to students with additional needs. We want to find out what our strengths are and what changes we should make. This review will explore how we will continue to provide an inclusive education into the future and achieve the best outcomes for all Territory students.”

The review will focus on students who attend special schools and students who attend mainstream schools (but need additional support). It will include:

  • How to create an inclusive education for all students
  • The diverse learning environments in the NT
  • How to build on our strengths
  • Engaging with stakeholders to gather feedback

Consultation will include online surveys, workshops and school visits in Alice Springs, Katherine, Palmerston, Nhulunbuy and Darwin.

“It is vital we get as much feedback as possible, and I encourage everyone to get involved,” Ms Lawler said.

The feedback will be used to produce an independent report that will support NT schools in delivering a quality education for students with additional needs.

To provide feedback visit the link below. Consultation closes on 30 March, 2018.

HI THERE FROM PURPLE 4

What a fantastic start to 2018! Firstly, welcome back John and Isaiah, now in Year 9 and a warm welcome to Nicolas, Peter, Flynn and Tracey Anne who have joined us in Year 7.

We have been busy, busy, busy with all the new programs this Term already. We have started Work Skills and chose to explore Hospitality and cooking.

Purple 4 are honing their computer and STEM skills with a challenging but exciting coding program that teaches us all about programming computers and robots.

We are finding new ways of learning by concentrating on Visible Learning and switching to a Growth Mindset, taking risks in our learning and knowing we can achieve through persistence.

Because we work so hard, it’s fun to get out and about on Community Access and get into the pool once a week to stay active, relax and reward ourselves.

PURPLE 5

Greetings everyone!

We’ve had an awesome start to the year in Purple 5. Everyone has settled back into school routines, and is trying hard in class. Shelley has replaced Tina as SESO, and Banjo has joined us from Blue 4. The class is very excited about the new healthy recipes we’ve been trying with Shelley. We are now cooking 2 to 3 recipes per week! A favourite is the cheesy noodle omelette.

Unit of work

We are doing a unit of work on Darwin history. We have a book of old photos of Darwin in our classroom which inspired us to go out and take photos of some of the places in the book.

We had lunch at the museum grounds near Darwin High School.

Our week includes classes in Maths, English, Science, Art, and HGD. We have 3 different PE classes running which keep us fit. Margy’s Gym, Zumba and Rock and Water.

We wish you a happy year!

NEW HOME FOR WINNING ARTWORK

Students from the Darwin High Outreach of Henbury School presented their local member, Lauren Moss, Member for Casuarina, with the artwork which won the 3D category of the Henbury Art Exhibition late last year. In return Ms Moss presented the students with $300 worth of art products. The artwork, entitled Inspiration Project, will be hung in the Electorate or Parliamentary office of Ms Moss.

Students Gerry, Despina, Rachael and Dawyte had studied the novel Blueback by Tim Winton. They chose to do a project inspired by the novel. The students chose to use the theme of “Home” and what home means to people. They asked contributors to present their thoughts in matchboxes which were then placed over a map of the Northern Territory.

NURSE VISIT

Visiting Health Promoting School Nurse Lynda Leigh from Katherine High School has recently spent time with HPSN Janine Kelsey at the new Henbury School special needs facility keeping in touch to update, share ideas and reflect on the role of school nursing.

School nursing across the Northern Territory provides expertise and oversight of school health services in support of health promotion and primary health through education. As healthy students are successful learners, health promoting school nurses advocate for the physical, emotional, mental, and social health of both students and staff.

Collaboration with other school personnel, administration, and community resources is essential to the success of our health promoting school nurses program in promoting health & wellness within our community.
