GREETINGS FROM DRIPSTONE MIDDLE SCHOOL OUTREACH 2

Semester 1 is slipping by quickly as we head into Term 2. This Term we have welcomed 2 new students, George and Peter, to our class.

We have settled into our new school environment enjoying the different aspects and opportunities that Dripstone Middle School provide such as:

Banjo - going to my Music Elective and to Clontarf at lunchbreak, buying my lunch from the canteen.
Jeremy - Music Elective, playing Wii sports games in the Library at lunchbreak.
Justin - going to Clontarf for my Elective subject, buying lunch at the Canteen.
Michael - learning skills in my Judo Elective.
Peter - going to Clontarf.
George - getting to know my new classmates.

Another of our Year 8 students said that he liked introducing his new classmates to Clontarf and showing them around DMS.

Over Term 1, we have been reading a collection of funny and weird short stories with strange endings by Paul Jennings. On Friday afternoons, we view short video adaptations of these stories from ‘Round the Twist’ TV series. We compare the texts with the video and discuss our personal preferences.

Friday afternoon video sessions with our ‘next-door’ class, DMS1.

This Term we have started reading the narrative ‘68 Teeth’, an action packed, crocodile hunting adventure story set in the Gulf country.

How many teeth does a croc have?

In class, we have discussed how lifestyle choices affect our health and wellbeing. Participating in our weekly Margy’s Gym Fitness program keeps us fit, strong and healthy.

Working on our body strength and endurance.

Practicing our Numeracy skills.

Every Thursday, we go on a community access visit with SMS Outreach class. Some of the places we have visited so far are Parliament House and the Reference Library, Planet Tenpin bowling, Howard Springs, Qantas Hangar and the Cenotaph on the Esplanade.

Banjo in front of the poppies he helped to make for ANZAC Day.

WELCOME TO GREEN 4

Our class consists of six incredible and diverse teenagers, two of which are in year 12; Peter and Igen, two in year 11; Nathan and Fu Seng, and two in year 10; Jeffrey and Manoli. Our major focuses include work training, life skills, communication, and wellbeing.

Our senior students are focussed on their transition from school and are progressing nicely. Jeffrey and Nathan are working offsite at the H Hotel in the laundry, while Peter, Igen, Fu Seng and Manoli are developing similar work skills in our class laundry program. The class laundry program is designed to work in conjunction with the H Hotel laundry program exposing students to the same skills with the objective being to eventually transition to the H Hotel workplace. Nathan and Jeffrey have continued to develop their skills in bakery and hospitality with the Coffee Crew on Friday mornings. This term students have started Coffee Crew training on Monday mornings giving Nathan and Jeffrey a great opportunity to share their knowledge and train their classmates.

In Green 4 we use a variety of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) to support our verbal language including, sign language, Proloquo2Go (P2G), Pragmatic Organisational Dynamic Displays (PODD) and Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). Our students need to be able to understand and be understood. We regularly have conversations discussing our likes, dislikes, needs and wants focussing on effectiveness. If a message is not understood students are taught to find alternative ways to communicate their message effectively. To encourage communication students have created “Chat Books”. These books include information such as likes, dislikes, activities, recent news and the important people and things in their lives. These are a great tool to encourage conversation while developing our recall and use of descriptive language.

This year we have fully embedded mathematics into our life skills and work training programs. Each week students learn about money in relation to their weekly excursion. Students are learning to recognise the right notes and coins to use in a transaction, as well as the appropriate steps and effective communication when ordering and paying for an item or activity. So far students have ordered and paid for a game of bowling or arcade at Kingpin, lunch at Red Rooster and lunch at Café Central. Mathematics is also being delivered in our daily morning tea preparation and our new and exciting enterprise “Meaties Pet Food- Pleased to meet you, Meat to please you”. We are making and selling nutritional raw pet food for cats and dogs. Within these programs students are learning a range of mathematical concepts including units of measurement, number and place value and fractions and decimals. And finally in our laundry program students are developing skills with number and place value and data representation and interpretation.

All our students enjoy exploring their senses. We always have access to sensory equipment in class to help keep ourselves regulated. In the Engine room the boys enjoy running and crashing, balancing, crawling through tunnels and immersing themselves in ball pits. In the Sensory room they enjoy relaxing on the water bed, travelling to another realm in the infinity light tunnel and feeling the soft vibrations of the music in the speaker chair.

To keep our minds and bodies healthy we participate in weekly swimming and Zumba classes. We are getting creative in Sense-ational Designs making a range of different items including headbands and coffee cup sleeves. And finally, in music and dance we are working on some performances for your viewing pleasure.

Green 2 News for 2018 Term 2

Green has started the year with lots of changes and challenges. We have senior student, Hamish who’s preparing for life outside school, Ken who is continuing to develop and learn new routines, Anastasios, Thomas and Patterson who has continued from last year and Zac joined us from Nermaluk.

So far this year we have ventured out to a range of locations such as the Wharf Precinct, Kingpin, The Planet and the Esplanade to name a few.

In class students are developing skills with Sensational Design, Enterprise Ed and Hairdressing. Patterson is also enjoying being shown how to make coffee and other delights with the coffee crew. This is a hard choice to make for Patterson as we have cooking at the same time. Students also have been powering along with their literacy and maths program and learning about things that grow and how different things grow. Thomas is particularly interested in the chickens, what came first, the chicken or the egg!?
