ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Dear Parents/Carers
Week 4 of Term 2 almost half way through the term which seems to be flying. A number of things to consider for the next few weeks.
School Camp
Permission forms have been sent home for our School camp at Batchelor Outdoor Education Centre. The camp will take place 8-10 August. Please return your permission forms as soon as possible and at the latest by 20 June. Payments also have to be made by the end of Term 2.
Transition and Education Adjustment Plans (T/EAP’s)
T/EAP’s were sent home earlier in the Term, please read and if you are happy with them please sign them and return them to the school. If there are changes please send the document back with the changes.
Staffing
We welcome to Henbury School Ms Michelle Clements who will be working in Green 1 and Yellow 3 as a Special Education Support Officer, and Ms Petra Ogden and Ms Noor Wright who has taken over a shared the teaching role at our Nightcliff Middle School Outreach Class.
Students accessing Special Needs buses
Buslink has requested that parents/carers need to be ready and waiting to receive their child off the bus each afternoon. As a safety feature if not received by parents/guardians students will be bought back to Henbury School, for parents/guardians to collect.
Reports
Teachers are currently undertaking the process of writing reports so as to be ready to be sent home in the last week of term.
Mothers Day Market Stalls
Thank you to everyone who attended the inaugural Henbury Market last Tuesday 8 May, especially the wonderful Skill Set facilitators, support staff and of course students! This was a fantastic opportunity for the School to get an idea of how to shape its new market style business next to the Op shop in Aralia Street (in former RLSA building) and for students to see their goods being sold in a real life context! We were able to raise over $911.60 in sales which will feed directly back to the Skill Set programs.

Riding for the Disabled (RDA)
Riding for the Disabled is about to begin this Term on Tuesdays. There are still spaces available for interested riders. Please discuss riding with your student, then let the school know you are interested and we will send home the appropriate paperwork.
Students will be able to use their sports vouchers for membership if they participate, this will cover the $100 membership fee. Riding will then cost $30 a week for each session. Riding costs will have to be paid on the day or before they go out each week.
Transitioning
We welcome many students from Nemarluk who have begun the transitioning process once a week to Henbury School. Welcome again.
Rod Opie
Assistant Principal
CONGRATULATIONS JOAN OCAMPO
Congratulations to Joan Ocampo (2nd from left) who is the winner of the 2018 AEU-NT Quality Educator Award. She was nominated by colleagues for her dedication and expertise in working with special needs students and preparing them for their future lives. Joan was presented with the award at their annual conference dinner.
GREETINGS FROM DRIPSTONE MIDDLE SCHOOL OUTREACH 1
We have been working really hard out at Dripstone Middle School and whilst we have been at Henbury School. One activity that we like to do is BODMAS. This is where we learn how to do Maths sums using each of the Maths equations in their correct order. This has allowed us to also learn how to buy the right amount of items with a certain amount of money, which will help us when we do go to the shops.

Every Tuesday, we have been working in some of the Skilled Set groups to help create The Henbury Market. Some of us have been in the Senseational Designs group (to create some of the material items to sell), the Café Crew (where we make food and drinks to sell) and the Retail group (which allowed us to set-up, promote and run the Market).

WELCOME TO YELLOW 3
Welcome to the Yellow 3 newsletter update. We are a senior classroom with students in Years 10, 11 and 12. This year we have introduced NTCET Modified Learning Assessment Plans (LAPS) as a means of programming our subjects. This does not mean a great deal of change for the students on a day to day basis, however it does mean they are able to earn credit points towards a NTCET Modified Senior Certificate which is exciting!
Our Business and Enterprise NTCET LAP is built around our class lunch catering business called the Henbury Healthy Chefs. Each Monday students make delicious soups and salads for staff and themselves. This program embeds many learning areas including work skills, nutrition, maths and literacy. Part of the program led students to research community service providers that the business could support and share profits with. In Term 1, The Henbury Healthy Chefs chose the Asthma Foundation to donate to. For Term 2 a savings goal has been made so that the students can make a donation to the Starlight Foundation.

YELLOW 2
Yellow 2 has 8 senior boys in it this year. We’ve been doing a lot of maths and spelling. We’ve also done a fair bit of work training - including Coffee Crew, Garden Crew, RDH Laundry, Automotive Skills, and Woolworths. A couple of us young men are working as Mentors to the younger students in Coffee Crew and beginning to develop as leaders in our school.
Our favourite subjects are cooking, art and PE. Please check out a few of our impressive Self Portraits. See if you can guess who they are!
VISIBLE LEARNING UPDATE
Visible Learning continues to have a strong presence at Henbury. In Term 1 classroom Teachers and SESOs made a Commitment to Action to build our students’ Growth Mindset. Things such as scaffolding reflective feedback sessions, displaying and communicating goals and targets more effectively, and, building common Growth Mindset language were just a few of the great commitments made.
It is also awesome to see how student goals and targets are being creatively displayed in our classrooms and how progress data is being collected. These visual displays help student’s to remember their goals and track their learning and progress. It is also very handy for staff and visitors to the classroom to see students’ learning focus areas.
VL Coaches - Raylee Parker, Janelle Welch and Paul Drewitt.

STAFF PROFILE – DANIELLE NGAHERE INGLIS
Hi everyone
I am a 29 year old New Zealand/Maori, who has lived in Australia/The Territory for nearly 6 years. Tennant Creek was my first home in Australia and I lived and did community work there for about a year before heading down to life in the Alice.
Darwin life came after that as well as 5 months backpacking and teaching English in Cambodia, travelling to Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia.
I also met and fell in love with my partner Trev here! I am a lucky woman, he is amazing.
Before Aussie life, I ran restaurants in Christchurch CBD – where my workmates and I experienced/survived the huge earthquake that took 185 precious lives.
I have always been into performing arts and am currently performing backing vocals in a band with some dear friends. We are called the Epi©phannys.
I am really enjoying and learning from my time at Henbury and thanks to everyone for being so helpful and understanding.
STAFF PROFILE – ANGE NEWTON
Hi all, my name is Ange Newton – the new Director of OSHC. This is my second year with the Henbury family. Last year I was lucky enough to work with many of the students in a relief SESO capacity as well as after school and vacation care shifts with OSHC. During this time I got to know many students making the transition into OSHC full time a relatively easy one for all. Another role I have enjoyed was Saturday’s spent at the Henbury Op shop, so we may have met there. Prior to working in special needs I came from a background in rural development and community service for which I was awarded an OAM.
My husband Geoff and I have three grown children and two small grandchildren all living in Darwin, so it is easy for us to call the NT home. We enjoy riding our Harley Davidson and family time. I am currently learning to paddle board so if anyone has a second hand one to sell let me know.
WELL DONE HARRY
Well done to our former student Harry! NT Winner of the BuyAbility Above & Beyond awards for his work with HPA Helping People Achieve. Congratulations Harry!
