PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Dear Parents/Carers

Congratulations to Joan Ocampo who received an Inspiring Educator Award from the Australian Council of Educational Leaders. Joan works tirelessly to promote student voice through Science. Her passion for Science was reflected in the Annual Science Fair on Monday 27 August. This Friday the 7 September, Henbury School will host the Cluster Event for Kids Teaching Kids. Students from Wanguri, Nemarluk and Nightcliff Primary will participate in this event. All workshops will be presented by Henbury students. There will be around 150 students attending Henbury on the day. In November a group of 8 Henbury students and staff will travel to the National Kids Teaching Kids Conference, where this year they will present a workshop to other students from across Australia.

Henbury Market Place

Tuesday 28 saw the second Henbury Market place held at the school. Goods were sold to the public and students were able to buy Father’s Day gifts. The selection of products made by the students was exceptional and original.

Henbury School’s next new business will be a called ‘Henbury on Aralia’. This will be located in the old Royal Life Saving building next to our current Op Shop. The building will be used to sell Enterprise Goods to the general public and also as another work training site off campus. To build upon the students’ horticultural skills we plan to develop a plant nursery as well. Very exciting times. Stay tuned for more information.

Crewz’n Brew-Facebook @CrewznBrew

Crewz’n Brew have been very busy at lots of different functions. Have a look at the Crewz’n Brew Facebook site for information of where they have been. Thank you to staff who go the extra mile when a Saturday is involved, to set up the trailer and assist students where needed.

Our students make a great coffee and Frappe!!

Thursday 13 September

The next year 12 fundraising event is Casual Clothes Day (no uniform required) on Thursday 13 September. Students are encouraged to donate a gold coin to help raise funds for the Year 12 Graduation.

R U OK Day will also be on Thursday. R U OK?'s vision is a world where we're all connected and are protected from suicide. Their mission is to inspire and empower everyone to meaningfully connect with people around them and support anyone struggling with life.

Through one question “RUOK?” we can connect with others. To raise awareness, the wearing of yellow clothing is encouraged.

Professional Development Day 21 September

There will no school for all Henbury students, including Outreach students on this day. Please contact Ange at SR@H (old OSHC) if you wish your child to attend for the day. There will be no Special Needs transport on this day. All staff will be undertaking training relevant to ASD. Two of the sessions will revisit ASD Best Practice.

  1. 5 point Scale. Delivered by Chloe Dixon.
A tool that can be used to teach self-regulation. It was originally designed for children with autism, but it is highly effective with anybody of any age. It’s simply a 5-point scale for regulating.
  2. Positive Behaviour Support (PBS). Delivered by Grant Russell, DoE
This is a set of processes that can be used to support children and adults with autism who engage in problem behaviours. Problem behaviours often serve a purpose for a child or adult.

GOOD NEWS!

Sit down, have a cuppa and let us know how we are doing!

The Parent Survey Deadline has been extended to 14/9/18 to midnight.

https://www.schoolsurvey.edu.au/s/F2Xn8gFL

In order to get accurate and valuable feedback we need at least 25 more families to fill out the surveys. It takes 5 minutes, that is all.

We appreciate your opinions.

PURPLE 4

What a busy Term so far! Purple 4 have been on some very interesting Community Access trips to explore Darwin’s history. We have been recording all the information we collect to make individual presentations at the end of the Semester.

The class is focussing on healthy lifestyles by making good food choices and participating in sport such as swimming and the Rising Stars Basketball comp.

For Visible Learning, Purple 4 have been discussing Growth Mindsets, continuing with the Big Life Journal and filling in our Goal Reflection Journals. This is helping us understand how to become better learners in class and in our community.

Purple 4 have also been trying out new work skills in our Skills Set program including horticulture, bike maintenance, retail and Sensational Designs.

Greetings from Purple 5!

What a great start to Term 3 with our camp at Batchelor!

Toby and Enrique took care of each other and enjoyed the many activities.

Music is a very important part of our program and our boys are achieving academic and Health and PE goals through daily dancing and singing in the classroom. They willingly work through academic tasks, knowing there will be dancing and singing as a reward for a good effort.

Faisal enjoys making lists of his favourite songs which he takes to the school library at lunch time to listen to and to share with others. He is learning new dance steps and gaining exercise by dancing to music clips on the Commbox.

Enrique loves to sing and has been learning the words to the Beatles, “Hey Jude”. He took the printed lyrics home to learn and performed at the Henbury School Camp Talent Quest. He also performed the National Anthem for Henbury’s Annual Science Fair.

This term we are talking about the jobs we might like to do when we leave school and listing the Maths and English goals we need to work on. These are being displayed on our desks to keep them fresh in our minds.

Other programs we enjoy are Rising Stars basketball, swimming in the Henbury pool, ten pin bowling and cooking, as well as Maths, English, Science, HGD, Art and Total Rec.

COLES MINI COLLECTABLES

A couple of our classes have been collecting the minis to use as “shopping practice” with their students. Brilliant idea! If you have any minis you don’t want please donate them to our school. Thanks!
