Henbury Learning Commission
The Henbury Learning Commission were invited to present on Friday 19 October at the opening of the National Children’s Week Launch, which was held at Wulagi Primary School. Three students presented to students, parents and community partners of the National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse & Neglect (NAPCAN) of the Northern Territory. The presentation shared the success story of the Learning Commission in creating students’ voice towards school improvement.
Joan and I presented the success of our Learning Commission at the recent Principals’ Conference in Darwin, with staff from Casuarina St Primary and Nakara Primary. We are one of 16 schools from Katherine and Darwin, who make up the Northern Territory Learning Commission.
Joan Ocampo plus two other staff and seven students are currently in Melbourne attending the Kids Teaching Kids Conference. The aim of the conference is to increase awareness of water literacy and understanding the threats to the health of waterways.
Congratulations
We were excited to hear that Henbury School won first place in the SA/NT section of Australia By Design: Landscapes competition. The competition was part of a televised series examining 30 of the nation’s best landscape designs. The school was marked highly for incorporating colour, play space diversity, sensory stimulation and native plants to generate biodiversity and withstand climatic extremes. Congratulations to Joan Ocampo for winning the Excellence in Improving Learning and Development Award at the Northern Territory Disability Services and Inclusion Awards 2018 and on receiving an NT Australian Council for Educational Leaders, Inspiring Educator Award. Henbury is proud of the work that all our teachers and SESOs do with our students.
It is with admiration that I share what I have done over the last three weeks, catching up with ex Henbury students, now adults, and seeing their accomplishments. I have visited
- HPA AusDesigns and seen high engagement with work programs
- Disability Services and Inclusion Awards with ex-students in the Sign Choir and on stage with team of Building for Success with the NDIS project led by Sally Sievers - Anti Discrimination Commission
- Dancing with the Celebrities Gala Ball- where they were dressed to impress and danced in front of 300 people!
I also catch up with ex students when they visit Coffee on Henbury on a Friday morning. These interactions fill me with pride to see them as confident young adults.

GREEN 2
In term 4 Green 2 created some wonderful art pieces for Henbury Art Exhibition.
We also continued to learn more about cooking and trying new recipes.
Green 2 is also spending a lot of time on the farm to keep up with the egg laying and the mulching that needs to be done ready for the wet season.
Green 2 is gearing up to Christmas and there is much excitement.
One of our jobs for term is to collect and store the eggs for sale.
We hope you enjoy our snapshot of term 4.

WELCOME TO GREEN 4
Welcome back to Green 4. Let us reflect on our year so far. We are super excited for our good friend Peter who will be graduating at the end of the year. He begins his transition to Carpentaria this Term. We will miss him greatly and wish him all the best.
Jeffrey and Nathan continue to work at the H Hotel. Jeffrey is currently working in the restaurant and is completing a new set of jobs including setting the tables and polishing cutlery and glasses. Nathan is working with the public area cleaner, completing tasks such as emptying bins, wiping down gym equipment and sweeping. Fu Seng transitioned from our class laundry program and joined the boys at the H Hotel in the laundry for Term 3. He learnt to fold shirts, pants, socks and underwear, match room numbers and record items. Nathan and Fu Seng will be commencing work experience at the RDH Laundry this Term where they will learn to fold towels and sheets. Igen, Manoli and Peter continue to work on their laundry skills in class and, are making impressive gains learning to label, sort, wash, dry, fold, count and record the laundry items from Green 4, Coffee Crew and Meaties Pet Food. Nathan and Jeffrey continue to develop their skills in bakery and hospitality with the Coffee Crew on Friday mornings. Our Monday morning Coffee Crew, “Henbury Kitchen Rules”, has been a great success. We are learning a number of work skills including communication, teamwork and following instructions. The men are learning to set tables, take orders and make tea, frappes and banana bread. We’ve especially appreciated having our very own experienced Coffee Crew classmates to help train us. Thanks Nathan and Jeffrey. Manoli, Jeffrey and Fu Seng have started attending Horticulture as part of the Henbury Skills Set program. They are very engaged and are learning about different plants, using tools, WHS and creating a range of beautiful garden items. Peter, Nathan and Igen commenced work experience at RDA in Term 2 and 3, working on jobs such as mucking out stalls, cleaning water troughs and grooming horses.
Communication in Green 4 continues to develop and improve. Thank you Annemarie for taking on the mammoth job of personalising and assembling Peter’s and Fu Seng’s brand new PODDs.
Meaties Pet Food is a great success. We’ve made a significant profit and are looking at options on how to spend our money including, purchasing a new meat grinder to increase productivity and student engagement and, a dehydrator to expand our pet food range. We will also treat ourselves for all our hard work over the year.
The very talented Igen Manson and some local musicians have put together a rock band. They are working on several songs that will be performed at the Henbury Corporate Luncheon.
Being the sensory seekers that we are, we were very pleased to get new equipment in our Engine Room. We especially like the new extra-large ball pit and adult sized swing.
We’ve participated in weekly Zumba lessons with Sarah from TO THE BEAT. She is about to begin maternity leave and we want to thank her for all the great work she has done with us and wish her and her new little family all the best. We are excited to continue Zumba with our new instructor Cherry. Come and find us on the dance floor at the next school disco and we can teach you some moves.
Another new and exciting addition to our jam packed timetable is our visits from Harlow the therapy dog. Kristy and Harlow from Mind Your Paws visit us in class each fortnight. We enjoy getting the beanbags out to relax with Harlow, taking her for walks and learning tricks such as sit, shake, beg and pray.
Visible Learning in Green 4- We have our TEAP goals displayed on our walls along with our data tracking sheets. We use this space to continually reflect and give feedback to the students on their progress. In additional to this, we have a space for “Magic Moments” where we add special student achievements outside of their TEAP goals. Acknowledging “Magic Moments” provides another meaningful opportunity to give feedback to students as well as help inform planning for individual student needs.

Greetings from DMS2
As we head into the last Term for this year, our class continues to engage in a wide range of learning opportunities and experiences both in and out of the classroom. Over this Semester we have also joined in with mainstream Elective classes including Judo, Music, Drama and HPE.
Jeremy practising his Judo techniques
Yellow 2 are doing a MNTCET subject called Personal Learning Plan (PLP). They are working on developing their communication skills. On a Monday we participate in a social session in their classroom. We send emails between our classes to suggest ideas for activities we can do when we visit.
Good times with the Y2 crew
Goings-on DMS2 like to get up to -
Browsing books to borrow and playing chess at the DMS Library
Planking competition after a fitness work-out
Wheeling and dealing properties playing Monopoly
Last Term we chose and recorded 3 Maths and Literacy skills that we would like to focus on.
At the end of the day, we contribute to a reflections’ discussion session. We chat about how our day went, challenges faced, what we did that made us think hard, what we learnt, what we need to work on and give feedback to each other.
