ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Parents/Carers
Hi All and welcome to Week 5 Term 4. (Yes, we are a week late.)
T/EAPs
It’s been busy, busy, busy with T/EAP meetings for the past 4 weeks. 133 meetings done! Thank you to all involved in the meetings. They went smoothly and on time. It was fantastic to hear all the positive feedback from parents and carers about how much each individual student has grown this year. As the year progresses, I think we forget to take a step back sometimes, and see all the little steps the students have taken, that adds up to fantastic progress and maturity for the year.
Marrara Craft Fair
This year the Marrara Craft Fair has moved to the Darwin Showgrounds! It has grown so big they need the extra space. Save the date: 24th and 25th November. Henbury School will be there with the products all students have made throughout the year.
Pop Up Stall
Speaking about selling our quality made products, Yellow 2 and Yellow 3 have had the opportunity to run a pop up shop at Casuarina Village this week.
Monday and Wednesday, students had the opportunity to set up a sale table in Casuarina Village Shopping Centre and sell gift items made at Henbury School. They practiced appropriate communication in the community and money management. This is part of their Personal Learning Plan subject and developing skills to participate in post-school options.
Henbury Corporate Luncheon HCL
It’s on again! 7th December! Darwin Convention Centre and let me assure you, the entertainment this year is guaranteed to plaster a HUGE smile on your faces. Overheard by one of our staff members at one of the October Business lunches… Person A:”Are you going to HCL?’ Person B: “Are you kidding? It’s the place to be seen at that time of year!”
Reports
Reports, both Progress reports and T/EAP reports will be sent home in Week 9. Do not forget that this term, for the first time is only 9 weeks and we finish on Thursday 13 December.

WELCOME TO DMS1
Throughout the Year, DMS1 have been looking at different ways of communicating our ideas and three of the ways we have done this, have been through story writing, making a Stop Motion movies and talking in front of groups. Both Toby and Leeam wrote a chaptered story that they entered into the 2018 Territory Authors Award, and for their effort, they both received a participation award.
One way that we have been presenting our ideas is with Digital Technology, by making Stop Motion Movies and commanding some Bee-Bots to perform moves. Below are some scenes from each of our movies.

It has been fantastic to watch our student’s broad range of work skills grow over the year as they prepare for their future pathways. Yellow 2 and 3 thank Lauren Hofmeyer and Felicity Faull for the amazing job they do at coordinating the work training and VETiS programs at our school.
Yellow 2 and 3 also had a lot of fun working on their different Modified NTCET subjects. As part of HPE the students joined forces and ran a low support PE group on Wednesday mornings. It was fantastic to see students’ confidence grow as they instructed their peers and got stronger and fitter!
In English, students studied a book about migratory birds which live on Casuarina Beach for the wet season. Part of student’s assessment was to persuade someone to read the book. The students were amazed at how far these birds travel each year (all the way to Alaska!), and were interested to learn how to help protect these birds.
In Personal Learning Plan, teacher Deb Hall coordinated work training taster days at various venues to help students learn about different aspects of work life. Venues included Cash for Containers, Greening Australia, Henbury Op Shop and Foodbank. Thanks Deb!!!
Nicole H and Darlene helped run an art program. Collage and Aboriginal art was a focus. Come along to the Henbury Art Exhibition to check out the finished products! Thanks SESOs Sarah and Tina for all your hard work behind the scenes!
Visible Learning Yellow 3 - this semester students have been tracking their own spelling progress. They looked at their assessment results from Semester One and made a goal of how many words they wanted to learn by the end of Semester Two. Each week they chose words from their spelling lists to practice. It will be great to see how close they come to achieving their spelling goals at the end of the year!
Visible Learning Yellow 2 – students have been discussing their learning goals this term and checking for progress. Every day we have a little discussion about how the day went, what went well, what could be improved, and how to improve it. We’re still working on improving our Growth Mindsets!

VISIBLE LEARNING UPDATE FROM DHS
DHS Outreach students love green. Green means that work is finished on their Visible Learning Board. Congratulations.
“It is helpful being able to look at the board to see
where I am up to. It takes a lot of the stress out.”
Jack
“I like knowing what I am up to and what is left to do.
It saves confusion.”

DHS KILLER ART PIECE
DHS has been working on a fascinating literacy project. For our English Modified subject we had to demonstrate our communication skills. We had to prove that we could work together and also learn together.
The idea to make our art project around Crime and Society came about from reading a segment in the book we studied where some developers tried to evict someone and when she said no they started doing some illegal things to make her leave. The book was called Blueback and it was written by Tim Winton.
We did a lot of brainstorming on a website called “Mind-mup” for what our art pieces should be. Some of our ideas were paper chains of dolls or a thought line but we chose to represent Crime and Society on frames. Firstly we tried calico and cotton. They both worked well but they had their problems so we had an investigation where we worked out all of the problems it had. Then we decided to change materials to satin but found similar problems. We ended up using A5 lime paper. The reasons why we chose this are because it didn’t fray like the others or bleed like the some of them.
After finding out the best material to use we started making our art. It was really hard just for the three of us, me, Aaron and Willis but Darlene came to help us out with our work. She was really helpful and even made some frames for us.
We had to make a video to show everyone in a staff meeting. Ms Kate helped with the script and filming. Next we tried looking for a background to stick all the art frames on. We decided to an all-black sheet to use but some of the art frames kept falling off and even got damaged. Ms Kate found a melamine board she thought would make it easier to move around and so far it has proven to be good.
It has been a really challenging 2 terms to get this finished. Mainly because we only had three people but over time we have gained in confidence.
We showed our work to some Darwin high staff.
We would like to encourage you to visit the Art Exhibition to see our final installation which has 20 frames. It is fantastic.
