Tuesday also saw the first ever, Henbury Kitchen Rules, with our Senior Outreach students in the Cook Off. This Cook Off was a suggestion made to the Student Commissioners from the Suggestion Box. Each of the four teams prepared, cooked and served a special dish for parents and families of our graduating Year 12 students. The main ingredient was the Perch from our aquaponics facility and produce from the school farm.
The panel of judges decided this year’s winning team was the Red Team with a score 90.75%, Blue Team was second with a score of 90.25%.
The People’s Choice Award went to the Red Team. Thank you all teams, the food was of a very high standard
Thank you everyone who made this a special event. An extra shout out to Geoff Corry who filleted the fish for the students.
Wednesday the new fish tank for Goldfish was filled with 35 Goldfish. A big thank you to Evan for the work he does with the school’s aquaponics tanks. 10 new Perch were also released to replace the fish that were harvested yesterday.
This year we say farewell to Katie Cole, thank you for all that you have done with the students of Blue 2. Thank you, Craig Harding for the 6 months with the NMS students. We wish you a good year studying in 2019.
Deb Hall has been at Henbury for 11 years. She has significant knowledge and expertise of the NTCET, was a mentor to many staff and a strong advocate, for not only students of Henbury but all people who have a disability. Deb, who is retiring, will be staying in Darwin and continuing her consultancy work. We wish her all the best.
Year 12 Graduation
What an amazing night for students, families and carers. This event was held on Thursday 29 November. In my speech at graduation, I encouraged all students to dream large. As the Chinese proverb states, "The journey of a thousand miles begins with but a single step." The next stage of their lives has a starting point and that begins at the end of this school year. It is now up to them to begin the journey of a 1000 miles. I encouraged them to seize the next opportunity and I am looking forward to hearing about their dreams and what new memories they make.

Henbury Corporate Luncheon
I would like to thank all staff who put in many, many hours to prepare our school for this event. Planning starts in March and finishes on the first Friday of December. The entertainment by the Blue All Stars, School Band, Alix Mullavey, Brandon Redpath and Circus Peanut were outstanding. At the end of the event not one of our handmade gifts to everyone was left behind. Everyone loved the button Christmas Ornament and Bees Wax Wrap. A special thank you goes to Lauren Hofmeyer who was the Project Manager for the event, without her inspiring leadership this event would not have been the success it was. We have not finalised the amount raised. When we have we will post on the HCL and Henbury School Facebook sites.
Variety and Ray White
A big ‘thank you’ to Variety and Ray White for their generous donation of 3 hampers that will be given out to 3 lucky families to enjoy!
Thank you
Thank you to Garry Dignan for kindly donating two wheelchairs to Henbury School.
I wish all students, families, carers and school community members a joyous Christmas and a safe holiday. School resumes for students on Tuesday 29 January 2019.

TRANSITION TO THE NATIONAL DISABILITY INSURANCE SCHEME
NDIS Plan Overview
- Your NDIS plan will cover the disability support needs identified in your NDIS planning session. This is why it is important to let the NDIS planner know what your circumstances are and what you need assistance with.
- The NDIS will fund you directly for reasonable and necessary supports in a range of areas (depending on your needs) which may include services and supports like equipment, social participation, allied health therapy or respite for example.
- You will be able to have choice and control over how you use your funded supports and who you purchase them off. In some cases, the NDIA will manage the funding for you. There are many new NDIS providers commencing business in Darwin and you will be informed as to who these providers are.
Transition from OoD to the NDIS
If your child currently accesses services from the Office of Disability you will receive one or more letters advising you of the following:
- If your child currently accesses services from the Disability Coordination Team (DCT) you will receive a letter advising you that your child's DCT case will be closed and to contact either the NDIA or the NDIS Local Area Coordination Partner (APM) to address any matters that you would have previously directed to your child's Disability Coordinator.
- If your child accesses services from the Children's Development Team (CDT) and/or the SEAT Service you will receive a letter advising you that your child's CDT and/or SEAT case will be closed and to contact your private allied health provider to address any matters that you would have previously directed to your child's Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist, Speech Pathologist or the SEAT Clinical Leader.
- For a small group of children with high medical support needs this letter may alternatively advise that CDT will continue to provide a restricted range of specialised allied health services that are viewed by the NDIS as a health system or education system responsibility and are therefore not funded in your child's NDIS Plan. The letter from CDT will clearly outline what these services are.
- If your child has loan items of equipment issued by the Disability Equipment Program (DEP) you will receive a letter offering to gift these items to you and advising you to contact your private repairs and maintenance provider to address any matters that you would have previously directed to the DEP unit. Your child’s NDIS plan should include funding for repairs and maintenance.
- There is an Early Childhood Early Intervention provider that is working with the NDIA for children under 6 years of age that you may be involved with depending on the age of your child.
- There are Quality and Safeguards in place to oversee providers registering to become an NDIS provider. In the interim this is undertaken by the Office of Disability however at full scheme (from 1 July 2019) there will be a national NDIS Commission established with an office in Darwin.
- There are still some areas of the NDIS that are under design and these include school transport for children with disabilities and personal care in schools. In the interim, it is best that you raise these issues with the NDIA in your planning session.
- If you disagree with your plan and its contents you can contact the NDIA and ask for a plan review.
- For further information you can contact the NDIA on 1 800 800 110 or visit their shop front at Level 2, 22 Harry Chan Ave Darwin, they are open from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm or visit their web site at

HEY, FROM CSC3
It is the end of the year and everyone is happy, tired and ready for a holiday. We have been doing subjects like – P.E., Clontarf, Business Studies and Maths. We did an Oral presentation about our class book ‘The Barrumbi Kids’. In English we had an art project, we turn it into a kid’s book to share- we read it to Transitions students. Our artwork went into the art show at CSC and Henbury. Aiden is working towards getting his P’s licence. Robbie is working at the Op Shop. William is doing work experience at Croc Park and plays AFL for the Wanders. Happy Holidays.

Visible Learning update
In CSC3 for Visible Learning we use age appropriate (teenage friendly) Leaning Intentions “We are learning to…” and Success Criteria “What I’m looking for…” to talk about what we are learning to do how we know we have done it and why we are learning it. We also break tasks down with examples, steps and checklists to get our job done.

DHS OUTREACH UPDATE
Darwin High Outreach students are breathing a sigh of relief as they know their official NTCET work has finished for the year and has been judged complete by other teachers. Capping off the hard work with a win in the Art Exhibition was amazing. Our Inspiration Project concept just keeps on getting better and better.
Jack has been our voice on the Learning Commission and he has done an incredible job for all of us.
We trialled a new subject to turn our work from Coffee Crew into points for our NTCET for a subject called Business and Enterprise Modified. This certainly added interest to our Coffee Crew and Crewz’n Brew experiences. We had fun in Certificate 1 in Retail with Felicity and Sacha and other Henbury students, while Gerry was getting his Certificate 2 in Retail. The Year 12s did a new Cross Disciplinary Modified course which has set them up as school leavers. Add in Bakery, Barista and Stage 1 classes and we know why we have been so busy.
Aaron is excelling at Bunnings and getting fantastic reports. Jack has been accepted into Kitchen Operations for next year which will require a two day commitment most weeks at University. Well done, everyone.
We are getting ready to say goodbye to our Year 12 students, Gerry and Jypsey. We have already said goodbye to Jayden and Despina and wish them all the best. Gerry has set a really good standard for us to reach and will get more points than he needs for his NTCET Modified Certificate. We want to thank him as he has always been willing to assist us and share with us.
We have also been welcoming some of our new students for next year into our classes recently and look forward to working with Willis and Jack O in 2019. We would like to thank our teachers, SESO’s, Ms Darlene, parents/carers and friends and wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and all the Henbury staff.

YELLOW 5
Our focus this semester has been Healthy Living. Students discussed a range of topics including balanced diet, physical activities, team sports, hygiene, grooming, health and wellbeing. Yellow 5 challenged themselves with some new experiences including a yoga program with visiting yoga instructor Liz. Over the weeks the students became more balanced both physically and mentally. Some students were particularly flexible and showed off some pretty impressive poses and sequences!
Every Friday Y5 goes on Community Access excursions and travels to various places in and about the Darwin and Palmerston region using public transport. The class organised the best bus routes to take and planned the day around the bus times. Students purchase their own meals as part of their budgeting program. After having their lunch the students split into groups and go ‘window shopping’ for a bit of retail therapy. It is the highlight of the week!
Christmas is fast approaching and we have been making decorations to help get into the festive mood. Wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday break!!
