Assistant Principal’s Report
Parents/Carers
For the most part, it has been a very smooth and calm transition for all our new and existing students to the 2019 school year. We have 21 new year 7’s and new students across various year levels, who make up a total enrolment of 143. Thank you to the staff, families and students who have contributed to this success.
We welcome several new teaching staff to the Henbury team; David Plews in Purple 3, Anica Cormie in Blue 4, Debora Lorenz in Blue 1, Rhys Ballinger in Blue 3 and Rowan Barrow in NMS. Cherry Carroll is back filling in Green 2 until Brittany Daly commences in week 7. Welcome to our our new SESOs; Daniel Lobos, Jess Gibb, Ted Chirema. Over the coming newsletters we will learn more about our new staff through our Staff Profile feature.
EAP (Educational Adjustment Plan) Year 7 to 9 and TEAP (Transition Education Adjustment Plan) Year 10 to 12 Planning Meetings
EAP and TEAP planning meetings commenced in week 3 and will be running through to week 6. Thank you to the parents and carers who have already attended meetings so far. Considerable resources are utilised to ensure the opportunity to discuss the individual needs of all students at Henbury School. Your attendance at these meetings is a vital piece in the puzzle of your child’s success at school.
Open Classrooms and PossABILITIES Expo
SAVE THE DATE! – Thursday 28th March
We encourage all families to take the opportunity to visit Henbury campus on this afternoon. Teachers will be available for you to walk through your child’s classroom and see what they have been doing since the start of the term. The café will be open and there will also be a BBQ so take up the opportunity for a night off from cooking!
It is also an opportunity to attend the PossABILITIES Expo which will run from the hall. Over 40 stalls from various services will be in attendance. Take this opportunity to seek information about support services for families. More information on the stalls and information sessions will be available closer to the date.
Special Needs Transport
There are still a number of students on the waitlist and this is being updated on a daily basis.
A reminder to all families that the condition of using the special needs transport is that a responsible and competent person (18years or older, or a person with the consent of the parent/carer of the child) is at the pickup and drop off location at the designated time to meet the child.
Please inform Henbury School if you know your child will not be catching the bus for any period of time. For unexpected absences please contact Buslink on 89442444. Your assistance in keeping everyone informed will support Buslink to manage their runs smoothly and limit any unnecessary delays.

STAFF PROFILE – DAVID PLEWS
Hello my name is David. Following 10 years of teaching in the Territory I am very excited to be now teaching at Henbury. I will be teaching Purple 4 class alongside the very experienced SESO – Doug Kinter. My passion for working in Special Education has developed over the last few years through supporting a number of students and their families from an early childhood mainstream school setting into Nemarluk School. My passions outside of school include keeping fit, travel, food and adventure sport including skydiving.
STAFF PROFILE – DANIEL LOBOS
Hey, my name is Daniel Lobos and I have just started as a SESO at Henbury School working with high support students. I am a Chilean Australian, born and raised in Sydney. Moved up to the Top End just over 8 years ago, following my brother (a teacher at Henbury School), escaping the hustle and bustle of big city life. I studied at the University of Sydney completing a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations, Government and Philosophy. Since then I have worked in a number of unrelated areas from being cellar hand in a winery in Mudgee NSW to a farm foreman on a Pearl farm in the Kimberley WA. I have over the last few years worked odd jobs at Henbury School, one on one with an autistic boy, SESO relief, vocational studies support, work training and at Henbury’s OSHC.
STAFF PROFILE – ROWAN BARROW
I would like to introduce myself as the new class Teacher for Nightcliff Middle School Outreach this year. My name is Rowan Barrow and I been teaching in various locations throughout the NT and internationally the past 15yrs. I have just returned from a 3yr posting in Malaysia, where I was appointed Head of Physical Education as Straits International School, Penang, Malaysia. Previous to this, I have taught in both urban and remote settings throughout the Northern Territory including Maningrida Community Education Centre, Darwin Middle School and was the PARRS School Sport Coordinator for five years which oversaw the School Sport program throughout Palmerston, Rural and remote regional schools.
I am really looking forward to this new role as Special Education teacher at Nightcliff Middle School Outreach, guiding the students to grow and prepare for lifelong learning. In my spare time you might see me cycling around Darwin, Instructing Konga classes, swimming and watching live music with my friends.
STAFF PROFILE – RHYS BALLINGER
Hi everyone my name is Rhys Ballinger. I am new to Darwin and to the teaching profession only graduating in 2018 from Federation University in Ballarat, Victoria. It was at this University where I achieved a Bachelor in sport and exercise science and finished up with a Masters of Teaching (Primary). I’m very excited to be at Henbury School and to learn all about the students, staff and the Northern Territory. Before I came to Henbury I taught at the Ballarat Specialist School as a casual relief teacher, mainly in the middle/senior school. In my personal life I have a keen interest in classical music, getting to sing with the Ballarat Symphony Orchestra and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. I have studied martial arts for around 10 years and have an interest in boxing and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. I look forward to a wonderful year at Henbury School!
PURPLE 4
Participating in community access provides students with the opportunity to develop their skills, knowledge and confidence to be able to independently participate in recreation and leisure interests at home and in the community.
At the start of Term 1 our Purple 4 students brainstormed ideas for appropriate community access destinations. Their requests included the Museum, Jingili Water Gardens, The Esplanade (Cenotaph), Parliament House, The Waterfront, Casuarina Library and Gateway Shopping Centre.
So far this term we have visited The Esplanade, The City Library and Gateways Shopping Centre to see the Supercroc. It has been very pleasing to see our students demonstrating great behaviour (including being considerate to members of the public) as well as being engaged in what we have gone to see or do.
Well done Purple 4!

PURPLE 2 CLASS, 2019

The team in Purple 2 this Semester includes two fantastic SESO’s Maddy Brannelly and Mitchell Opie and classroom teacher Jessica Westlund.
