Senior Teacher’s Report

Parents/Guardians

A big hello to all who comprise the Henbury School community. Term 2 is almost at an end with some very important events yet to occur.

Progress reports and Modified NTCET reports will go home with students on the 26th of June. It's great to see our students making so much progress with their learning.

Camp Batchelor 2019 will be held from 28-30 August. This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to become involved in extra-curricular activities such as climbing, mountain bike riding, abseiling and archery but to name a few. Please return your camp forms ASAP for this very important event.

Twilight Sports and Family Night will be held on Wednesday 26 June from 4:00PM to 7:30PM. Events such as team cheering, sprinting, shot put and long jump will be held on Dripstone oval beginning at 4pm sharp. A BBQ dinner will then follow. Please return your notes ASAP to let us know if you will be attending.

A reminder that Footy Training is also held at Henbury School each Wednesday night from 3-4pm. Please contact our wonderful school counsellor, Natalie Althouse on 899 77077 to register your interest.

Crazy Hair day will be held on 20th of June. It is fun to see our students with a variety of hair colours, so don’t be shy on the day. A gold coin donation from each student will greatly assist children with Cystic Fibrosis.

CSC1 OUTREACH

This year CSC is trying something different! All three classes are working together and teachers are teaching subjects instead of classes!

Doing this means that our students have the opportunity to show off their personal and social skills in multiple settings

I’m Andrea and this year I’m teaching Stage 2 English and Stage 2 Mathematics, here’s how our students are finding the new set up so far

Travis Baxter Althouse - This year has been really good doing lots more work than before.

John Kourtesakis – We’ve been learning about stuff that helps our future. The good thing about the class is that even if there is a lot of kids, it’s fine and steady because everyone is listening and working.

Jai Pastrikos – I’ve learnt that there are three levels of government and everyone has to pay taxes even if they don’t want to.

CSC2 OUTREACH

PossAbilities Expo

In Term 1, the CSC students ran a fundraising BBQ at the PossAbilities Expo. This BBQ was to raise funds for the Year 12 Graduation. Students were involved in the planning, shopping, preparation, cooking and serving of this BBQ. We filled lots of hungry stomachs and raised some much needed funds for this year’s graduation.

Steve from TCASS donated money so that we could buy BBQ supplies

Arafura Games

In early Term 2, CSC attended the Arafura Games for two days. We enjoyed seeing the athletes competing against each other. We watched basketball, table tennis, beach volleyball and sepak takraw. At table tennis on day two, we worked as ball boys and ball girls. The para athletes were competing. It was exciting to watch the athletes and the challenges they go through to compete. It was fun listening to the fans cheer them on. We felt proud to be part of an important event.

Book review Deadly Unna

This is a teenage book set in South Australia near the water. The author is Phillip Gwynne.

In the book they play AFL in the grand final, go fishing and muck about. There is also a shooting. Our favourite parts are the action (fighting, shooting and love). The book talks a lot about racism and indigenous culture in Australia. This book is for mature teen readers 13 years and over. It has adult themes, violence and language.

3 Stars out of 5.

NMS OUTREACH SUCCESS

Semester one has been incredibly rewarding for our NMS class as they have been working very hard on their personal strengths for Athletics, Swimming and Art.

At the end of Term One our class competed in the Nightcliff Middle School Sports day. Students participated in their House teams in a variety of sports including Athletics and tabloid events. Our class had a very successful day, enjoyed with peers and all of our class members taking out winning positions during the event.

During Swimming in Term one the class completed a range of assessment tasks including Swimming technique improvement, survival swimming and rescue simulations. All students received an Award for either Level 1 or Level 2. We were fortunate to have Lauren present the awards in class this term.

Finally some of our students entered their Artwork into the Freds Pass Show and were extremely lucky and proud to be awarded prize money and place getter certificates for their award winning entries.

Trinidey’s painted stencil art piece was awarded 2nd in his category. Torie drew an optical illusion and was placed 2nd in her category and Brodie did some amazing photography of Mangroves down at Nightcliff foreshore and took out 3rd place in his category. Well done to all involved.

TOP END REGIONAL SPORTS DAY

Tuesday 4th June at Marrara Athletics Stadium 26 students from Henbury and Outreach classes represented Henbury School at the Top End Regional Sports Day Athletics day. A total of 15 Secondary schools competed in the event, with each school selecting the best Athletes for the competition.

Our team had two training session together in the weeks leading up to the event and each class had worked on perfecting their running, jumping and throwing techniques in their own class time.

With a total of 26 students, amazing results, place ribbons, personal bests and some serious values were upheld during the day. It was a proud day and eventful competition with many students competing for the first time in such a big sporting event. Each student created personal bests while recognising their personal strengths and a few students to be place winners. All students were beaming at the end of the day, each participant gained so much from this incredible experience.

A big shout out to all the teachers involved in this event, we could not have done it without you. I really do appreciate everyone’s effort for bringing the team together and providing this opportunity for the students. Another big thank you to the teachers and SESO’s that helped with running of events on the day plus Brodie of NMS Outreach, who was the expert at raking the Long Jump all day.

Stay tuned for the full results in the next Newsletter.
