Principal’s Report
Parents/Carers
We have hit the middle of Term 1 and our student planning meetings are well on the way. If you haven’t heard about your individual child’s meeting time, please contact your child’s teacher. If you are unable to make your set meeting time please contact the school as soon as possible. These meetings are an extremely important part of your child’s educational program and are valued highly by Henbury School. Both physical and monetary resources are put in place as a priority for families and staff to meet and discuss your child’s needs.
On Tuesday, we had our NT Learning Commissioner elections. Congratulations to all students who were nominated. The staff and students were presented with videos of the nominated students as they entered the hall to vote. It was also wonderful to see the student made posters around the school leading up to the election. We have a total of 11 students who were elected by their peers and staff to represent the voice of Henbury School students for 2020. Thank you Amanda Thomas, Maddi Anderson and Dave Panjer who are our NT Learning Commissioner teachers and will be working closely with our Commissioners over the coming year. To celebrate the day we had a free sausage sizzle for students.
Congratulations to all our netballers who participated in the Darwin Region interschool sport netball carnival. Thank you to Rowan Barrow who is organising these interschool days. It gives our students an opportunity to participate in a variety of sports with other middle and senior year schools. I would also like to thank Rowan for running our Swim Teacher Rescue program over three Wednesday’s for over 3 hours each session. We are very lucky to have your expertise at Henbury School.
BULLING. NO WAY!
This Friday is national Bullying No Way Day. Students will be involved in activities during the week to address issues around bullying and what to do if it happens to them.
POSSIBILITIES EXPO – 26 March - SAVE THE DATE!
Raylee Parker and Felicity Faull are working hard to bring this event together for our families and wider community. It provides an opportunity to meet a variety of organisations that can support our families all in the one spot. Stall holders are being confirmed and break-out sessions are being finalised. If you know of an organisation that would benefit our school community and would like to come along please get in contact with Raylee or Felicity.
HARMONY DAY – 7 April
Our AEIW, Alicia McCann, is looking for presenters for our Harmony day activities. If you or someone you know would like to present or be involved in a Harmony Day activity, please contact Alicia. We have students from over 30 different backgrounds and would like to celebrate as many as we can on the day. It could be dancing, art, singing, cooking, textiles we are open to anything to share the diversity of cultures in our community.
PARKING
This has been an ongoing issue since moving to our premises at 11 Henbury Avenue in 2016. All staff are required to park in the shared staff car park with Dripstone Middle School unless they have an allocated spot in our car park. There are exceptions with our office staff who are regularly in and out of school who park opposite Mimi-ga (old Henbury School site). This allows the spaces directly in front of the school for parents. Unfortunately we sometimes find people parking outside our school when they are visiting Harry’s Place. Where we have noticed this, we are asking them not to do this. This week I have had a meeting to discuss the parking issues with a representative from Darwin City Council. They are working with us to improve the issues around parking. They will be issuing fines to owners of cars who park illegally on nature strips and who park over residents driveways. Parents and carers please take this as a warning to park in designated spots or to use the bus lane as a pick up and drop off point.
ATTENDANCE & SPECIAL NEEDS TRANSPORT
At the end of week 4, Henbury School had a total enrolment of 141 students. We averaged an attendance of 85%. Please remember to contact the school if your child is absent. If you are having issues with Special Needs Transport, please contact our Assistant Principal, David Panjer. Do not contact Buslink directly.
Congratulations Agnes
Congratulations to Agnes M for being selected in the Basketball NT under 14 girls 3on3 squad. Well done Agnes!
School Photo Day
A reminder that photo day is next Tuesday 10th March. Please ensure that your child wears their uniform on the day and that order forms are sent back to school. Contact the front office on 899 77077 if you have any further questions.

HI FROM PURPLE 5!
We welcomed two new students to our class this year with Ryan Hodges who arrived from Canberra, and Marcius who moved across from Wanguri School. Both are in Year 7 this year. This brings Purple 5 to a class of 7 boys, and two staff Julie, and Shelley.

We have started using the Chat book method in our literacy class. We go on educational excursions every second week and on alternate weeks, go bowling with P4. Educational excursions give us much to reflect on and write about. Chat books are meant to have a drawing or photo chosen by the student followed by reflective writing. Everyone has started the year very well with a good standard of work. Our first excursion in Week 2 was to see the Sidney Nolan art exhibition at the Museum of Arts and Sciences. The boys chose their favourite painting and worked hard to copy it in class.

We are continuing to learn about Ned Kelly each week as well as the Bombing of Darwin, and Australian and New Zealand birds and animals.
Julie, Shelley, Anastasi, Callum, Jekamiah, Simaki, Marcius, Ryan and Lachlan.
SchoolZine Phone App
Henbury School currently uses SchoolZine to publish newsletters throughout the year. The school newsletter is an important communication tool to inform our school community of student learning, important notices and upcoming events.
In an attempt to increase accessibility to this service we would like to introduce the SchoolZine app.
This is a free app that can be easily downloaded onto any iPhone or android device which allows school newsletters to be viewed conveniently on any smartphone or tablet device.
To download this app please see information attached.
Any questions please direct to myself on the contact details below. I am available to assist with downloading the app any time, please ask at the front office for assistance if required.
PURPLE 4 NEWS
Hello from Purple 4. Our class numbers have grown this year and we now have a class of 8 students (2 girls and 6 boys). Peter, Snaha, Roanin, Flynn and Zac have been joined by Angela, Mez and Jordan.
No time has been wasted on getting out on the Community access with Purple 5. We attended the Ned Kelly Exhibition by Sidney Nolan at the MAGNT which has inspired some interest in History and some construction fun whilst making the replicas of the Ned Kelly’s famous helmet.
In week 4 the Bombing of Darwin Commemoration was attended by NMS outreach and P5 and 4 where the events 19th February 1942 were remembered by dignitaries and locals representing the Darwin community. The commemoration was described by the students attending the event as both “noisy” and “interesting”.

The students have shared that one of the highlights of the school year so far has been the fortnightly visits by Mind Your Paws Therapy dogs. It has been wonderful to see how quickly the students have built up a caring rapport with the two therapy dogs. Some students were initially very apprehensive about touching or even being close to the dogs but
Using Therapy Dogs have been shown to have a range of benefits including;
- Relaxation
- Improved concentration and mood
- Engagement and empowerment of self-expression for young people
- Improved behavioural issues
- Improved literacy and numeracy skills
- Lowered anxiety levels
- Be in the moment, mindfulness
- Decrease in stress hormones (Cortisol)
- Increase in feel good hormones (Oxytocin)
- Safe and inviting environment
- Emotional, social and physical support
- Lowered heart rate

DARWIN REGIONAL SCHOOL SPORT MIDDLE AND SENIOR NETBALL COMPETITION
On Tuesday 3rd of March, 2020, the Henbury and Outreach Netball team participated for the first time in the Darwin Regional School Sport Middle and Senior School Netball competition, alongside 39 school teams.
Nadia, Kimberley, Kate, Azaria, Debbie, Emily, Rosie and Hayley had the ultimate Netball experience competing on both indoor and outdoor courts during the five games at the Marrara complex. Great agility and prowess was on display with each game ending with an exceptionally close score and an abundance of smiles. All team members demonstrated care and compassion, respect and resilience throughout the day. Nadia lead the team as the captain and did a stellar job of guiding her peers. Kimberley and Kate shadowed the wonderful O’Loughlin Catholic Collage students that stepped up to help us with our duty as umpires and scorers. A huge thanks must go to each pair of kind and helpful Nightcliff Middle School students that joined us as extra team members each game during the day.
Well done to all girls that competed. Your talents definitely shone through and you made Henbury School very proud of your achievements.
Final game results:
Game 1: OLoughlin Catholic
Collage (8 goals) – Henbury Outreach (3 goals)
Game 2: Darwin Middle School 7 (8 goals) –
