PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Welcome back everyone!
It has been challenging times and I would like to thank our dedicated staff, resilient students and supportive families during what has been new ground we have navigated these past months.
I has been pleasing to see most students back at school this term with an average attendance of 80%. The Northern Territory Government in line with the latest health advice from the Australian Protection Principal Committee is that schools are safe and all students are expected to attend in person this term. Students who are unwell must remain at home. If your child falls ill during the day, parents/carers will be contacted and required to arrange for their child to be collected as soon as possible. Where students elect not to send their child to school, the child must be learning from home.
We continue to follow the guidelines set out by the Government to ensure schools remain a safe place for all. Regular hand washing and cleaning of surfaces as well as limiting people on school grounds and social distancing where practical. School bubblers remain only to be used to fill water bubblers not to drink directly from. If you don’t already, please send a water bottle with your child to school.
Excursions and work training still remain suspended. Due to the planning time required and the fact we are yet to have approval for camps and excursions, we have also had to make the disappointing decision to cancel our school camp to Batchelor in Term 3. We hope to replace this with some fun onsite activities.
Our middle years outreach students from DMS. NMS and SMS will remain on campus for week 3. We will have an update next week in regards to when they will return to their off campus classrooms.
Mother’s Day Stall
The retail students have been working hard in preparation for our 2020 Mother’s Day stall next Tuesday 5 May. Gifts have been made by students during our Skill Set program. Due to restrictions of visitors on school grounds, this stall is only for students. More information on items and prices follow in this newsletter.
Thank you to parents and staff who have collaborated together to formulate individual student goals in Term 1. We value the input of families in this process to ensure our students are accessing the curriculum to the best of their ability and to continually build a strong connection between home and school. A signed copy of the 2020 Transition/ Educational Adjustment Plans will be sent home next week. Please contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns in relation to this document.
Last Friday, we held an ANZAC memorial service. In addition to the ode being read over the loud speaker by one of our very brave students followed by a minute’s silence, our students laid poppies in front of our school mural. Thank you Amanda Thomas for organising this moving service and distributing activities for classrooms.
Thank you Lauren Moss, member for Casuarina who gifted us with some sweet goodies that didn’t last long and two ANZAC books which will be treasured for years.

HELLO FROM GREEN 4
Hi Everyone,
Welcome to Green 4!! Our class consists of five students: four brand new Year 7s from Nemarluk (Mia, Alex, Andrew and Blake) and one seasoned Henbury student in Year 10 (Toby). We have had such a busy and fun first term settling back into school routines and getting to know one another. We love playing funny games and watching stories on the CommBox. Our favourite games to play are ‘chasey or tip’ and ‘hide and seek’. You will often see us running around the school yard laughing and having a ball. These games have allowed us to continue to practice our social skills and develop friendships.
A big focus in our class is expressive communication. We all use different modes of communication, both verbal and non-verbal. We have been learning a variety of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) strategies to support us when our message is not being understood. These have included practising sign language, using a Pragmatic Organisation Dynamic Display (PODD), using the Picture Exchange Communication Systems (PECS), Snap + Core Plus and NuVoice. We enjoy using these AAC strategies not only when communicating our needs but also with completing our Chat Books. Our chat books are composed of a variety of pictures of ourselves from in the classroom, around the school and in the community. We sit with the staff in our class and answer ‘wh’ questions about the photos. We love looking at all the different pictures and reminiscing on the fun memories!
We have also had a big focus on emotional regulation and learning to use the 5-Point Scale. Each morning, we ask one another how we are feeling and then place ourselves on the class scale. Some days we are all on Level 2 which means we are calm and happy, other days some students may be a Level 1 (tired or sad) or Level 3 (angry or silly). Depending on what Level we are at, we choose appropriate strategies with support from staff to get us back to a Level 2. One of our favourite places to use is the Engine Room.
This semester we are loving our time with Shannon in Enterprise Ed. We have all been practising using the sewing machine and making different items for the Mother’s Day Stall coming up. We have also loved our sessions with Carol in Science. She lets us do some pretty cool experiments which keep us very entertained!
We are looking forward to another fun Term and the staff in Green 4, cannot wait to see how our friendships develop over the year!!

GREETINGS FROM G2 CLASS
Green 2 have had a very busy and fun start to 2020 and we’ve hit the ground running this term after a nice Easter break. We love our learning rotations and have been hard at work online on StudyLadder, working on our chat books and learning our sight words.
Paul has worked hard on his reading focus and finished his first passage last week.
Getting active has never been more fun, you should see our yoga moves, swimming, tip chasey, bike riding and trampoline jumping. Willam's favourite is the bike!

In Term 1, G2 got to head out to Henbury on Aralia café for Community Access, we were all very polite and enjoyed our drinks. Courtney was very helpful ordering. We also ventured out shopping at Coles in Term 1, Paulo was fabulous at pulling our shopping trolley.

Everybody in G2 loves to cook and we all help with the shopping, deciding what we'll make and preparing our shopping list.
Mikaylah is our resident kitchen expert with her study skills experience in the café. G2-Mikaylah
In G2 we are all very curious and have learnt a lot through watching Behind The News, a kids news program. We are practicing our social distancing and reminding each other to wash our hands! Debbie is very good at reminding us to follow the rules. G2-Deb T
To finish off term 1 we had a bit of fun and creatively re-enacted Renaissance paintings and challenged other classes to have a go too. Have a go at home if you can and send us your shots!

We love to have visitors and look forward to welcoming families in to visit our class and see our work once the Corona virus restrictions are lifted.
Have a great weekend, From G2

HI FROM DMS 2
Hi From DMS2,
We are off and running this year and have been extremely busy already. This year, students have started a class business. Their business is called, ‘Henbury Healthy Chefs’ and students are cooking healthy meals for staff on Henbury Campus. While running the class business, students are working on health, budgeting, cooking, hygiene and shopping (Amanda is doing our shopping for the next couple of weeks). Students are excited to try and make a profit and have worked hard to find out staff food preferences by conducting a survey for staff.
To learn more about businesses, we have caught the public bus to Henbury on Aralia. When using public transport, we are practicing our road safety, bus safety and communication skills. While at the café we enjoy trying all the different food and beverages. We also enjoy running into old class mates who are now working at the cafe.

ANZAC Day
This year, Henbury School students made poppies and wreaths for ANZAC Day. One of our students who is an Army cadet, read the ANZAC Ode to the whole school. Students then went and planted the poppies into the ground in front of our school mural. Classes made ANZAC Day art that they displayed in the office window. Students displayed a lot of respect and compassion throughout the day and there was a lot of ongoing discussions about ANZAC Day 2020.
