PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

As the end of Semester One 2020 comes to a close, I would like to extend a massive thank you to our amazing staff at Henbury School. They continue to show all our school values of respect, responsibility, resilience, compassion and teamwork that we hold high at Henbury. Coupled with pure grit, determination and creativity during times that have challenged the whole community.

The last few weeks, I have been immersed in reading each students Semester One report. This not only gave me greater insight into the programs and opportunities our students have been offered across our school, it also rewarded me with the knowledge of the amazing progress our students have gained despite the challenges we have faced.

Last week, I visited Henbury on Aralia and today I am looking forward to a hot drink and morning tea at Henbury Café. It is pure joy to see our students working in these spaces, serving customers and refining their skills.

This morning, I was invited to the Science room where SMS and NMS students have been working with circuits. They have constructed a houses with working door bells, lights and fans. The detail and thinking in their creations is to be commended. Thank you Carol Ayers our new 2020 Science teacher who has provided such an engaging program for our students across the school.

Our Sports House Carnival morning was a huge success with the three house teams, Arafura Barras, Uluru Dingoes and Arnhem Crocodiles fighting to have their name placed on the school shield as the 2020 winners. Teamwork was needed in all the activities which included sitting volleyball, tunnel ball and target ball. The team war cries were a highlight and there were many notable costumes on the day which created great team spirit. Congratulations to the Arnhem Crocs for coming out victors in the end. Thank you to Rowan Barrow who led the team of staff to make this morning run so smoothly!

Our sports morning was follow by our end of term assembly. To follow social distancing rules we held our assembly via Skype. Now this no easy feat battling technology so everyone could see each other, the presentations and a variety of student made videos. A huge thank you to Amanda Thomas who lead the assembly with the Learning commissioners and to Vince Poke who supporting Amanda with the technology. Congratulation to all our student who received awards.

Another huge thank you to Trevor Willis, General Manager of NORMIST ‘Darwin nuts and Bolts,’ who raised almost $700 for Henbury School through the selling of cleaning products and hand sanitizer by holding stalls at local shopping centres. Thank you Felicity Faull and student Melissa and Malakai who helped on the stall. You will be able to purchase these products down at our Henbury on Aralia Café with 20% of the sales contributing to our fundraising.

On Monday 31 August, our planned whole school professional development day will take place. Our focus is part of our strategic school improvement plan and will be the first day of the 3 day training on Structured Teaching. The day will address executive function, learning styles for students with ASD and co-morbidity, and the choreography of learning environments including schedules and work systems. Gail Preston will be the presenter. She has over 30 years’ experience as a teacher, academic and school principal. More recently Gail has studied at the University of North Carolina and has met the requirements to gain TEACCH Professional Certification, Practitioner Level.

SR@H will be opened for those families who require care for their children. Please contact our director Sam at SR@H for bookings.

Have a wonderful break and see you all back again on Tuesday 21 July.

HELLO FROM DARWIN HIGH OUTREACH

We are so glad that Henbury On Aralia opened again. It has been strange not being able to go anywhere except school. Luckily we managed to get the Barista course done in Term one.

We were so pleased to see Tahnee again from Henbury On Aralia.

We had not wasted our time, however. We worked with our amazing SESO Rod and got some units of work done for our Certificate 11 in Retail Services. Jack O has been busy doing Certificate 1 in Retail Services as well. As Willis would say, at DHS we work!

Willis and John have been doing their manufacturing course each Thursday and will continue to do this next Term. They are making coffee tables.

Aaron, Jack and Tahliyah as Year 12 students prepared a Z file so they could get their lives organized for leaving school this year. They have been very busy with their Cross Disciplinary Studies course.

Thanks to Ms Felicity and her tireless work on our behalf, Tahliyah is at work placement this week in a Child Care Centre. This allows her to put into practice the theory she has been doing in two university courses to do with supporting people.

Jack A has been patiently waiting for work placements to be allowed to happen again. He cannot do any more university courses in his chosen field of cooking, until he gains an apprenticeship or a traineeship.

Thanks to Ms Felicity Jack A is starting a work placement at Kantillas this week. He has not been idle. Jack has been doing an Indonesian cooking course on weekends to keep his learning happening.

We feel like life is moving on again. We will have been with our Henbury friends on Tuesday for sports. Big thank you to Ms Sarah and Mr Dave who never let us feel like we were totally isolated. We always felt part of the Henbury family even though we did not get to visit. We hope everyone has a great holiday break.

SANDERSON MIDDLE SCHOOL- SEMESTER 1 NEWS

This semester has been an interesting one, with some interesting changes for the SMS class. We spent some time on Henbury Campus and enjoyed spending time working alongside the DMS2 class.

Our class has been showing great sportsmanship skills during our PE lessons. Ethan began to teach the class some footy skills. We also played soccer and basketball during sports lessons.

They really enjoyed going out on community access at the beginning of the year. The beach was fun, we found shells, crabs and enjoyed exploring nature. When we went to Cool Spot the food was yummy and the drinks were delicious. We are looking forward to going back next semester.

We have enjoyed playing Monopoly this semester. The boys are learning about money, adding up numbers and social interactions with this fun and exciting game.

HENBURY ON ARALIA

And the countdown is finally over! With pleasure and pride…and a bit of nervousness too, we finally opened Henbury on Aralia last Thursday. It was great to return to doing all of our favourite jobs at the café again – one student said “Being back at Henbury on Aralia is like being in heaven!”

Yet it was also tricky and challenging. Another student summed it up exactly in one statement as he looked around the café in awe: “EVERYTHING has changed!”

And he was right, so much has changed since we last opened, with all of the new COVID-19 protocols, posters on the walls, new clipboards and procedures, new equipment to learn how to use…and that’s not even to mention the new menu items and stock in our gift shop! And yet – everything ran smoothly and with resounding success. His statement made us realise and appreciate how incredibly resilient and adaptive our students have been – so to them all this week – a big WELL DONE! Please give them a pat on the back when you see them next…well, in the air, from 1.5m away  Adaptability, flexibility, resilience and the ability to cope with change are all very important work skills, so we are very proud.

We are back at it again this week with regular trading hours:

Thursdays

9:30am – 2pm

Fridays

9:30am – 2pm

Saturdays

9am – 1pm

(Kitchen closes 30 minutes before closing time)

Our updated menu is attached. We will be talking more about our yummy new items, and our wonderful student chefs over the next few weeks.

We hope to see you soon!
