ASSISTANT PRICIPAL’S REPORT

Dear Parents/Carers

Can you believe we are already in Week 6 of Term 3!

Science Day

Science Day was an incredible success! Thanks must go to Carol Ayres and her team of staff and Learning Commissioners who led the day. There were some special guests (skin and scales) across the day. The buzz and engagement around the school was fantastic!

EAPs / TEAPs

Year 12 TEAPs are over for another term! Thank you to Raylee Parker for your dedication to ensuring the best possible post-school outcomes for our graduating students.

This week, years 7-11 report back meetings are commencing. It is wonderful to see the growth of students across the year.

Year 6 Transition

I have loved receiving photos and videos of our transition students engaging with their new classmates through our transition program! We look forward to them starting to spend more time in our school.

Structured Teaching PD 31st August

Structured Teaching is a framework that aims to support students in their learning environment, by providing predictability, clear expectations and defined work tasks. Whilst this approach is specifically aimed at students on the Autism Spectrum, it is considered best practice for students with other disabilities. We look forward to implementing Structured Teaching across more of our campus and outreach classes in the near future.

All staff will be attending a Structured Teaching professional development day on Monday 31st of August. This is a pupil free day. SR@H will be open for parents requiring care. Please contact Sam on 8997 7077.

We have an additional six staff who will be attending two further days of professional development to assist the rollout of the framework across the school.

Read Write Inc

Read Write Inc. is a rigorous literacy program that is proven to create fluent, enthusiastic readers, confident speakers and willing writers. It incorporates effective classroom management strategies that ensure participation and fast progress for all students, and comes with comprehensive lesson plans and assessment resources.

We sent 7 staff to a two day professional development session to support the further rollout of this program across our school.

#fridayfeels

Each Friday staff have the opportunity to share a ‘feel good’ moment or photo from the week that celebrates collaboration and teamwork. This week features our Rising Stars Program and Buddy Cooking!

Today at basketball, within the first 10 minutes, Francis realised that our team was far more capable of scoring than our opponents. He and Jaydon asked if they could change teams to support the Team Titans and ‘give them a chance’.

The way that these boys played with the Titans, passing them the ball and ensuring that they supported their new team was so great.

Hugo and Paul C during Buddy Cooking Program.

Restorative Practices

In the last newsletter we discussed how Henbury School is using Restorative Practices to facilitate community building in classrooms and as a tool to respond to issues as they arise in our community.

The below are affective questions that parents and carers can use to support students when ‘things go wrong’ or if ‘someone is hurt’.

Bushfires Update

26 August 2020

The bushfires currently burning in the Greater Darwin region and Top End have led to smoky conditions that may be a risk to people with respiratory ailments.

Always follow the advice of Bushfires NT or the Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services if your area is under threat.

If you are concerned about the air quality around your area, the Department of Health recommends using the AirRater app. The app allows you to monitor air quality at your location as well as providing information on bushfires and planned burns.

When the air quality drops to 'poor' or below, we encourage people with respiratory conditions or illnesses to:

  • Avoid physical outdoor activity
  • Stay indoors, with windows and doors closed where possible
  • If using your air-conditioner, set it to recirculate
  • Follow your asthma action plan and seek immediate medical advice or care if needed
  • Call 000 in an emergency.

Download the app for free today:

RUOK? Day

On Friday September 11th, I am looking forward to seeing the wonderful displays our classes are putting together for RUOK? Day. This year’s theme is ‘There’s more to say after RUOK?’. Unfortunately, this is a student and staff only event. Luckily Café on Henbury will be open with some special RUOK? Day themed goodies!

School Council

We are still looking for parent members! If you are interested, please contact Principal Sarah Corry on 8997 7077 or sarah.corry@ntschools.net

GREEN 1 NEWS

Welcome back to Green 1. Let us reflect on our year so far. We are super excited for Ken, James and Manoli who will be graduating at the end of the year. James and Ken began their transition to Carpentaria in Week Three of Term Three. They will gradually increase their hours at Carpentaria throughout Term Three and Four as they participate in different programs and activities. We will miss them greatly and wish them all the best.

Becoming work ready is a massive focus for us, and the Green 1 boys have continued kicking goals in this area. Due to COVID-19 all our work experience was cancelled in Term Two. As a substitute we decided to run our own classroom work skills lessons. These lessons included Floristry, Baking and making two new products that we hope to sell at HOA - dried rosemary and recycled paper seedling pots. We also continued running our class business “Meaties Pet Food”. We now have our logo printed onto stickers giving us a more professional appearance and more job skills to practice when packaging our products.

Now that restrictions are easing, Manoli, Thomas, Patterson and James are all working at Henbury on Aralia and the Henbury Op Shop. Some of their jobs include wiping tables, sanitising the highly used areas, watering plants, dusting shelves, cleaning glass and stacking shelves. Manoli, Thomas and Patterson are also planning on commencing work experience at HPA in the near future.

The communication in Green 1 continues to develop and improve. The Green 1 boys regularly go to the school café and HOA. They make orders using a variety of Augmentative and Alternative Communication to support their verbal language. The Green 1 boys are working on being understood and communicating their messages effectively. This is something we are all extremely proud of. Ken has continued to work through PECS Phases I to III. He enjoys requesting different songs and movies. Ken is learning to distinguish between preferred and non-preferred communication pictographs when making his requests. Thank you Danielle, Annemarie and Mitch for taking on the mammoth job of personalising and assembling James’s brand new PODD, just in time for his transition to Carpentaria. I really appreciate it.

We’ve had a number of staff changes in G1 this year. We’ve said goodbye to Annemarie who is now working in Purple Three. Thank you for everything you have done with us over the years, we truly appreciate it. Luckily we still get to see you around the school. We said hello and goodbye to Mitch who supported us for a few weeks and is now working in Blue Block. Thank you for being so flexible Mitch. Hello and welcome to Lacey. Lacey is working with Ken and doing a wonderful job, thank you.

BLUE 4’S NEWS

The past couple of weeks have been very busy in Blue 3 and 4. We have had Lego bridge building challenges, tower challenges and teamwork activities. We have been out and about with students attending Balanu each week, developing our Positive Circle skills and cooking up a storm!!!

NIGHTCLIFF MIDDLE SCHOOL OUTREACH

NMS Outreach have had a tremendous start to the term returning the classroom eager to learn, inspire and lead.

In Week 2, we had internationally renowned local artist, Aly De Groot, visit our classroom to share her ghost net weaving story. She introduced the students to the unique style of repurposing plastic to tell a story about the negative effects of pollution in our waterways and stimulate education through artwork. Thank you Aly for visiting us and loaning us your Turtle for inspiration.

During PE class, Night Middle School Outreach joined Sanderson Middle School Outreach for private soccer coaching session with the talented Nika at Top End Multisport Centre, Coconut Grove. The lessons incorporated a range of fast paced skills and drills over the four weeks, concluding with a round robin tournament. Thankyou TEMS for having us!

The Nightcliff Middle School Outreach class, and Reece from DMS, have been leading and mentoring buddy reading with the Purple 2. The students have been working on literacy and numeracy questions within their reading group and each have taken their turn to act as a mentor and guide group storybook.

Over the next few weeks our class is getting excited to investigate Bush Food and Medicine within the community and experience more surprise visits from local artists to inspire new art ideas. Watch this space!

HENBURY DEEP BLUE SCIENCE WEEK 2020

Science day was held last Thursday and boy was it a success! A big thank you to our guest presenters for supporting our Science Day.

Ashley Murdock – The Rocket man
Sue Carter – Stem and Digital Capability Team
Amy Kate Kirke – Author
Kate - Darwin Widlife Sanctuary

Thank you also to our amazing staff and students for making this day a success.

Below are some highlights from the day:

Henbury Satellite Selfie

All classes combined to produce a mosaic turtle for the science week satellite activity. We are eagerly waiting to see what this image will turn out like from the satellite.

Dump Busters Campaign Launch

A small group of children launched a campaign to increase the amount of recycling that happens in classes at Henbury School. The totems reflects what is happening in our school for recycling and organic waste at the moment. Remember to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

5, 4, 3, 2, 1 Blast Off!

Students made and launched rockets on science day. Many of them really thought carefully about the fin design for their

rocket and if it would fly best with 2, 3 or 4 fins.

Author Storytelling

Amy Kirke read her story “The Sensible Sawfish” to Blue 9 students.

Wildlife

Terry turtle and Carol crocodile were a huge hit with the students. Many of the students were able to hold them.

The Human Hovercraft

The hovercraft fail to hover. Oh no!

Jacques Cousteau

Thank you to Jacques Cousteau (alias David) for the visit to our science fair.

Students teaching Students

A number of students were involved in running experiments for other students.

Spheros and Blue-Bots

The highlight for many students was learning to code using Spheros and Blue-Bots.

That is my water!

Congratulations to Jeffrey and Kimberly for doing a great job at making dirty water clean again. Sorry Amanda you just miss out!

Check out the photo gallery below for more photos.

COVID19

Although there is currently no community transmission of Coronavirus in the Northern Territory, we are still remaining highly vigilant. Anyone who has flu like symptoms is not permitted on Henbury School grounds. Staff members who are being tested for COVID19 or have a family member being tested, who is living in the same house, are required to be isolated at home and are not to attend Henbury School. Not until the staff member produces a certificate to say they or their family member has received a negative result will they be permitted to return to school. This is an expectation that we have of our students and their families as well.
