SENIOR TEACHER’S REPORT

I think everyone would agree, we are all enjoying the beautiful cooler weather now the dry season has finally kicked in! More students are choosing to stay outdoors during break times, rather than seeking out the air conditioning in the hall, sensory room and library.

Transition/Education Adjustment Plans have been sent home in the mail this week. If you have not received your child’s plan by the end of Week 5, please get in touch with the front office. Thalia and Jo having been working hard at creating 2020 student school IDs, and these too should have come home. Replacement IDs are $10.

COVID19 UPDATE

We continue to follow directives of the NT Department of Education regarding our school management of COVID19. Our outreach middle school classes will return to their campuses (Sanderson, Nightcliff and Dripstone) at the start of Week 5, Monday 18th May. We thank the staff and students of these classes for their patience and flexibility – it has been great having these classes on campus, but we know they are keen to get back to their usual routines!

Excursions, work training and other community outing and visitors to the school will steadily recommence from Monday 18th May. We will be reviewing risk assessments, therefore the roll out of excursions, work training etc. may take some time. We are currently working through the actions required in order to re-open our Henbury on Aralia café, and Friday’s Café on Henbury – our tentative re-opening date is Friday 5th June for both sites.

Students have become quite use to our increased hygiene and adjusted routines. Please remember if your child is showing symptoms of being unwell, please keep them home to help ensure our students and staff stay as healthy as possible. We will continue to keep you informed as more updates become available regarding COVID19 restrictions in relation to our school. Please contact us for any queries or concerns.

YEAR 12 SENIOR SHIRTS

It was wonderful to see how proud many of our Year 12 students were to receive their especially designed, Senior 2020 shirts. As you can see from the photos, their shirts look fantastic. This is the first year Henbury has offered a special senior shirt for our Year 12s. Thanks to SESO Jess Gibb for this brilliant idea, and the organisation of designs and ordering. We intend to make this shirt an ongoing uniform option for our future Year 12s. There is a minimum re-order of 10 shirts, please contact the office if your Year 12 student is interested in purchasing more shirts, or if they missed the first round.

YEAR 12 TERM 2 MEETINGS

Our Term 2, Year 12 TEAP review meetings will take place in Week 6. These meetings help ensure our Year 12s are thoroughly prepared for their transition out of school. Please contact myself or your students’ teacher if you have any queries about your Year 12 students’ meeting times.

STUDENT WORK TRAINING AND VOLUNTEERING

We are endeavouring to make more community connections for our students’ work training and volunteer opportunities. We know how capable our young people are, and how much they have to offer a workplace! If you are in a position to offer a work training or volunteer opportunity at your work place, or you know of a friend or family member who may be able to assist, please get in touch with our Work Training Teacher, Felicity or myself to discuss possible options.

Expressions of interest will be going out shortly to senior students (Year 10, 11 and 12) who would like to apply for Saturday positions at the Henbury Op Shop, Henbury on Aralia café and with the weekend Crewz’n Brew team. Going through the process of submitting their resume and having a mock interview provides a valuable learning opportunity in becoming job ready. Staff will support this process for students, and will be in touch with parents and carers of interested students.

OP SHOP APPRECIATION AND UPDATE

We would like to say a big thank you to Seva our Op Shop Manager, and our team of casuals and volunteers who have been holding the Op Shop fort during these challenging times. Staff include Julie, Nelia, Ujjwala, Linda, Manoli, Kay, Glynn, Michael, Suk, Abbie, Rod, Anne, Tahnee and Thu. This awesome team work extremely hard to keep our Op Shop running smoothly. The next time you are in, please feel free to voice your appreciation to staff. The Op Shop is open Monday to Friday 9:00am to 3:30pm, and Saturdays 10am to 3:00pm. We look forward to getting more of our students down to the Op Shop as part of their learning programs as COVID19 restrictions are lifted. Also, please note, from now on, we will only be accepting donations during shop opening hours, as the donation bin has been removed. Donations can also be dropped off to school between 7:30am and 4:20pm.

MOTHER’S DAY STALL

Thank you to all families who sent in money with their child for the Mother’s Day Stall. It was great to see our students and staff enjoy this special event. We hope all our mums, and special carers, had a restful and relaxing Mother’s Day. The stall was a great success with a wide range of items for sale, showcasing the many skills of our talented students, and dedicated staff. We look forward to the Father’s Day Stall and Christmas Gift Stall later in the year.

YELLOW 2

Hello Everyone

My name is Charli Gageler and I have been a Teacher at Henbury for 4 years this year and I am lucky enough to be teaching Yellow 2 this term while Nim is absent. We have had a busy start to the term with lots of new changes but everyone is settling in well. While we are unable to go out to work training we have been spending the time learning new skills that will help us in our future endeavours.

We have been working hard on all our NTCETM tasks both as a team and individually. Currently we are learning about healthy food habits in health, money, time and number problems in Maths and doing a text study on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in English. We look forward to sharing all our hard work with you later on in the year.

For Mother’s Day this year we made roses from paper and glued them onto a card.

Every Friday Lorenzo, Malakai and Carter go up to the Café and join Felicity and other students, making an assortment of different foods and drinks to serve to the staff at Henbury School They are learning many new skills that will assist them when they leave school and gain employment.

We are looking forward to what the rest of the year has in store for us!

YELLOW 3 HAVE BEEN SUPER BUSY

This year Yellow Three have been super busy!

We created a classroom 5 Point Scale to help us with our feelings. We choose strategies to stay calm. Some of the tools we use are fidget cubes, weighted blankets and theraputty which is like hard playdough.

Our whole class made poppies for ANZAC Day which we celebrated on the Friday the 24th of April. We used bamboo and red and black paper to make the poppies for all the classes in the school. We placed the poppies in front of the school mural to pay our respects to all the soldiers that passed away in all the wars.

In health, we are learning about lungs and how they work and what they do for our bodies. We brainstormed as a class what we thought lungs do. The students discussed how lungs filter your air and get rid of bad air and they help the blood get around the body.

On Mondays one student cooks a meal for the whole class so we can cook meals in the future when we finish school. We have cooked green curry in the slow cooker, chicken curry, chicken stir fry and tacos.

For NTCETM Tiler, Soroana and Jeffrey are doing Personal Learning Modified. We’ve done some quizzes on websites about learning styles and the best jobs for us.

Every Friday we do research about Henbury Wildlife. We’re making a book about wildlife on the school campus.

Our Year 12 t-shirts arrived last week! Thank you to Jess for organising them for us!

DMS1 OUTREACH

Hello from Dripstone Outreach with Cam and Alison. We are a class of nine students. We have 3 girls and 6 boys. We are mixed year levels from year 7 – 9.

Every day we do P.E. activities to stay active and healthy. For Maths we have worked on; fractions, money, time, and multiplication. For English we have worked on writing and spelling and filling out forms.

We had to move class from Dripstone to Henbury because of the COVID-19. This was annoying but we did well with the changes. We made the most of a difficult situation.

From us (Cloe, Leeam, Toby, Jake, Hamish, Julianne, Riley, Antonia and Leon)

HENBURY ON ARALIA

After a long break, it is with pleasure that we bring you the great news that we now have a ‘provisional’ opening date for Henbury On Aralia. Our aim is Friday 5th June 2020. And we are excited!

We will of course need to remain flexible depending on government advice, and await confirmation from the Department of Education that our students can recommence work training in the community.

But fingers crossed Friday 5th June will be our date!!!

We will keep you updated with further developments as we get closer to the date….
