SENIOR TEACHER’S REPORT
Staff have been busy participating in a variety of Professional Development workshops over the previous few weeks.
TEACCH - Structured Teaching Framework
Henbury hosted one day and three day Structured Teaching PD workshops facilitated by AASE (Aust Association Special Education) and Gail Preston. These workshops were invaluable to our teachers and SESOs, and special education staff from other schools. The Structured Teaching Framework was developed for learners with Autism Spectrum Disorder, however is extremely beneficial to all learners with special needs. A fundamental part of the framework includes structuring the learning environment to address:
Physical Structure
Schedules
Work Systems
Routines and Visual Strategies
Visual Structure of Materials
We are excited to be rolling out facets of this framework across the school in the coming months.
Meaningful Maths
In Meaningful Maths professional development sessions teachers collaborated with staff from other MM schools. The focus was on developing knowledge and skills around using different resources, using the MM Portal and assessment clarifying. An integral part of Meaningful Maths is using a variety of assessments to inform teaching and learning. Amanda Thomas has led the creation of our school MM ‘Bump it up’ wall, displaying students MM levels – a great snap shot of student progress and achievement as we aim to improve students’ mathematical knowledge and skills.
Read Write Inc.
Six teachers attended a two day workshop focusing on implementing the Read Write Inc. program in their classrooms. Read Write Inc. encompasses speaking, sounds, spelling, reading, and writing. Teachers explored in detail the foundation program ‘Fresh Start’. We are working towards Read Write Inc. being a part of our whole school literacy program across all classes. More teachers will be attending Read Write Inc. professional development in week 10 of this term.
Father’s Day Stall
The Skill Sets Retail group ran the Father’s Day Stall on Tuesday 1st September. It was wonderful to see the variety of items for sale that had been crafted by our Horticulture, Woodwork, Sensational Designs, Art, and Hairdressing groups, as well as NMS, Enterprise Ed and farm classes. The stall provided a great opportunity for students to practice their communication, money and decision making skills as they contemplated the perfect gift for their dad or someone special! We look forward to hosting a Christmas Fair stall at school for students in Term 4!

Henbury Corporate Luncheon update
Due to COVID-19 we have made the hard decision to cancel the annual Henbury Corporate Luncheon (HCL) for 2020. As an alternative, plans are in motion for “HCL’s 5 Days of Christmas” which entails small events across the week beginning 7th December. The purpose is to give back to the HCL community - sponsors, donators and guests, and to keep disability advocacy in the spotlight. Details will be relayed in the coming weeks.
EAP/TEAP Meetings
As you are aware we are in the process of conducting EAP/TEAP review meetings. Final reports will be sent home at the end of Term 4. If you are unsure of your child’s meeting time please contact your child’s teacher or front office staff 8997 7077.
Year 12 Graduation
The Year 12 Graduation celebration is all set for Thursday 26th November at Hilton Darwin. This is a wonderful event for Year 12 students and their families/carers to celebrate their schooling journey and achievements over the last 12+ years. Please contact the front office to secure your tickets – payment plans are available.
Aralia Learning Precinct Update
One of the greatest benefits of our Op Shop and Henbury on Aralia café is the opportunity for the connection it creates for our school community. Throughout the week and on Saturdays we often see current and past students, families and carers around the precinct, browsing in the Op Shop or in the café for morning tea/lunch, shopping for a plant or giftware. Both spaces create a safe and welcoming environment. So if you are looking for something fun to do on the weekend (or upcoming holidays), please come on down!
Op Shop is open Monday to Friday 9am – 3:30pm, Saturdays 9am – 2pm. Remember to drop your donations during shop business hours or to the school. The café is open Thursday and Friday 9:30 – 2:00, Saturdays 9:00 – 1:00 (kitchen closes half hour before).
SPORTS VOUCHER
The Sports Voucher is $100, available twice a year.
Physical $100 sport vouchers are no longer being issued through schools.
From the beginning of each school semester, parents or carers must apply online for each child. To apply for a sports voucher please go to the link below.

GREEN 2
Term 3 is just racing by. Green 2 has been busy at work using our individual schedules and working hard. We’ve had fun exploring books like The Very Hungry Caterpillar and ordering the days of the week. We’ve all started our new skill sets and have settled in well to our new roles. As the weather has started to heat up we’re enjoying our time in the pool even more and making the most of the nice weather getting outdoors with Total Recreation. So far we have practised our touch footy, cricket and soccer skills.

Northern Territory Learning Commission (NTLC)
On Friday week 6, Henbury’s Learning Commission students went to Dripstone Middle School to showcase what they have done over the year and where they are going next. Students led discussions and explained projects and leadership opportunities they have had over the year. Students were confident to answer questions and justify why they chose a project for the school. Respect and resilience was shown throughout the day and we are excited to meet up with schools at the end of the year to present the work we have completed in 2020.

RUOK?
On Friday 11th September we acknowledged RUOK? Day. Students and staff wore yellow, made badges and worked on window displays throughout the week. The displays were voted on by the Students with Yellow 2 taking the prize for best display.

Yellow 2’s poster was well presented and offered words of encouragement and practical advice.
Well done to all, the calibre of displays were AMAZING!

GREEN 4
What have Green 4 students been up to?
Green 4 are such excellent cooks that it’s heads down and no talking while they devour their healthy, delicious spaghetti bolognaise.
Andrew participated in so many of the experiments available at the Science Fair in August. He really enjoyed mixing chemicals to create foaming reactions in all the colours of the rainbow.
Toby has started Work Experience at the Henbury Op Shop. We are really proud of how hard he is working. Toby also plays basketball for the Rising Stars and is a goal-shooting legend.
Blake has become an expert at waiting and busies himself with engaging activities while the rest of the class catch up to his fast pace.
Mia is well on her way to becoming an independent bike rider, having mastered the use of the hand brake.
Alex is very musical. He enjoys the drumming classes and has recently joined the choir, where he has captured everyone’s hearts with his genuine love of singing.
DRIPSTONE MIDDLE 2
Wow, what a busy and fun Term we have had in DMS2. We were lucky to have 3 birthdays in 1 week. We even had the opportunity to surprise Lauren our Senior Teacher with half a cake (we decided to eat half the cake first to make sure it tasted nice)!
At the start of the year, students started to write to a pen pal. The student’s pen pals are from a school called Wycheproof. Whycheproof is in Victoria, and our new friends are into remote learning for the second time. Because of this, we are trying to keep them entertained with information about Darwin, our school and all our likes. At the start of Term 3, the class have switched over from sending letters via snail mail to sending emails.
Lastly, our class Business has gone from strength to strength. We are getting great reviews from staff at Henbury and are learning so much about budgeting, profits, tallies, graphs, kitchen safety and hygiene.

COVID19
Although there is currently no community transmission of Coronavirus in the Northern Territory, we are still remaining highly vigilant. Anyone who has flu like symptoms is not permitted on Henbury School grounds. Staff members who are being tested for COVID19 or have a family member being tested, who is living in the same house, are required to be isolated at home and are not to attend Henbury School. Not until the staff member produces a certificate to say they or their family member has received a negative result will they be permitted to return to school. This is an expectation that we have of our students and their families as well.
