Staff Profile:
Hello, my name is Lucy Shiels and I am the new Sanderson Middle School Outreach Teacher. I am fairly new to the Northern Territory, only arriving in early January 2020, from Melbourne Victoria.
I have been working in inner city Melbourne as an Outdoor and Environmental Studies Teacher for the last 9 years and more recently Head of HPE. Before that I worked for a season in Japan as a White Water Rafting Guide in the mountains of Niseko. So I have the odd talent of being able to yell instructions at people in Japanese.
I am passionate about adventuring and exploring outdoor environments. In 2017 I took a year off Teaching and did some big journeys all around the world. My favourite was surfing in Indonesia, canoeing across the Arctic Circle in the Northern Yukon Region and kayaking in Black Fish Sound, Canada.
I love teaching young people about our own local environments and take every chance I get to go out and explore the local Darwin area with our terrific SMS outreach class.
The Henbury School has proved to be a very positive and welcoming place, I really enjoy working with different staff and students in Skills Sets and I am learning a lot along the way.
SPORTS & BACK TO SCHOOL VOUCHERS
Semester 1 Sport Vouchers are now available for parents and carers to apply for. This can be done online at the link below:
http://www.sportvoucher.nt.gov.au/
The Sports Voucher is $100 and available twice a year.
Also, a reminder to parents that the Back to School voucher expires in April. Each student has $150 to put towards class resources and uniforms. Please contact the Front Office to process your voucher.
NIGHTCLIFF MIDDLE SCHOOL
On Friday 19th of February we went to the bombing of Darwin. When we went to the bombing of Darwin it was loud from was gun shots. The army was shooting to make us remember what it feels like in the bombing of Darwin.
Jacinta

My experience of bombing of Darwin it was loud and it was a bit scary because they kept on shooting with the gun. This helps us to remember those who fought in the war in between in 1942 and 1943. They also had to help people move out of Darwin so they could be safe. They did that so they can save Darwin to make Darwin a better place for us to stay.

PURPLE 4
Hi from Purple 4! This year we have 8 students in our class, 6 girls and 2 boys, in Years 7, 8 and 9. Hi from Snaha, Cindy, Lilly-Rose, Sierra, Angela, Xyalliaih, Marcius, and Jekamiah.
This year our class responded to an invitation to connect with Marnebek School in Melbourne. So far we have had two online meetings with their class of Year 11 and 12 VCAL students. Our aim is to develop a relationship though asking questions, making news reports and videos.
Every Wednesday morning, we have a Skype call and our students are developing their confidence to ask relevant questions and to speak in front of the camera. Marnebek students made a great video of their school to show us and even used a drone. We now have the challenge of making a video to show them our school.
Lilly-Rose, Snaha and Angela are doing the tie-dye class for Skill Sets this semester. These lovely pillow cases, socks and bags were made by the girls and are available to buy from Henbury on Aralia and Opportunity Knocks.

We are also busy with our Meaningful Maths lessons, SEL, Menu Planning, shopping and cooking, Horticulture, Woodwork, excursions and Performing Arts.
STUDENT DETAILS UPDATE
We are updating our student records. Student update letters will be sent home over the next week. Can parents and carers please review the details and mark any changes on the sheet before sending the letter back in to school.

Our skills on the court and sportsmanship was inspiring. The games were competitive and final scores very close. Well done Azaria, Hayley, Debbie, Jeanie, Narvia, Tracy, Bresises, and Agnes! And a big shout out to our amazing Sport Coordinator and NMS Outreach Teacher for the organisation to make this day happen.

PURPLE 2
Our class have been using literacy and numeracy to learn about the ocean.
We have made sea creatures and displayed them in our classroom.
We have been on community access to Lake Alexander where we had fun on the playground.
We have also been enjoying Zumba and dance.

PURPLE 3
What an interesting, fun and action packed start to Term 1, 2021. Hard to believe that we are in week 6 already.
This year, we are lucky enough to have 3 new students joining Henbury in Purple 3. We also have two students into their second year at Henbury and one student who is into her 3rd Year. All together we have a delightful mix of very eager students anxious to delve into an amazing variety of programs on offer this term.
As well as our daily programs of literacy and numeracy, where we are continually working on expanding our skills, we have also been developing new skills in other linking areas. In Sensational Designs we are making hair scrunchies. We have been measuring, ironing and folding, with the best part being that we are learning how to use the sewing machines. The scrunchies will be sold at the Henbury on Aralia café and also at the Mother’s Day stall here at Henbury School in May.

In Art we have made small yachts using paddle pop sticks and now we are onto designing a fish project.

We have also been cooking our lunches once and sometimes twice a week. We have made spaghetti bolognese, chicken curry and rice, shepherd’s pie, sausage curry and rice, spaghetti and meatballs, pizzas, as well as pancakes and muffins. We have even made our own bread. This week we are making sausage rolls.
The Therapy dogs, Harlow and Scout have been in to visit. They have shown us some of their tricks, like shake hands.

On Wednesday afternoons we join many of the other students to bust some good moves in Zumba, which has been a lot of fun.
Car Washing has been the choice for 3 of our students for the skill set program and they have been soaping up the staff cars to make them glisten and shine.
FABULOUS PHOTOGRAPHY
The fantastic Photography skill set group have done some marvellous work this Term. Enjoy their latest pieces.
