SENIOR TEACHER
Hi All
Term 1 has flown by so quickly, and it is hard to believe that Friday 9th April is the last day of the term. Term 2 begins on Monday 19th April. I wish everyone a restful break and look forward to seeing everyone at the start of Term 2.
Thank you to all families for attending Transition Educational Adjustment Plan (TEAP) and Educational Adjustment Plans (EAP) meetings. It was great to meet families and plan as a team to ensure best possible outcomes for our students. Teachers are busily writing the TEAP and EAP plans, which will go home early Term 2.
Harmony and Bullying. NO WAY! Day
Harmony and No Bullying. NO WAY! Day was celebrated on Tuesday, 8th April. Flags from all around the world added to the vibrant theme of the day. We started the day with a flag-raising ceremony using our new flag poles. Many students and staff dressed in traditional clothing from their country of origin or wore orange to signify social communication and meaningful conversations as well as freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect. Students participated in a wide variety of activities throughout the morning, moving through different classes. All had a great time. We finished our celebrations with a shared lunch where students enjoyed various foods dishes inspired from all around the world.
Thank you to the Harmony Day committee for organising such a successful event.

Whole School Assembly
Term 1 Whole School Assembly was a great success, and it was fantastic to welcome families back into our school for this event. Our Northern Territory Learning Commissioners (NTLC) did a tremendous job running the assembly, and for many, this was the first time speaking in front of such a large audience.
Enrique did a fantastic job singing "Hopeful" by Bars and Melody to celebrate Bullying. NO WAY! Day. We watched a video showing all the fantastic tricks students learnt in Circus last year.
Congratulations to all the award winners on the day and the NTLC for running such a successful Assembly.
Congratulations to the following students for receiving ‘Good on you’ School values awards:
Year 7 – Matthew R for Teamwork
Year 8 – Narvia S for Responsibility
Year 9 – Heidi G for Care & Compassion
Year 10 – Trinidey S for Respect
Year 10 – Peter C for Respect, Care & Compassion
Year 12 – Alex A for Care & Compassion
School Council
The next school council meeting will on Wednesday 12th May at 5:00pm.

TRANSITION AND PATHWAYS INFORMATION SESSION
It is never too early to begin thinking about post school preparations. In place of the annual school PossABILITIES Expo, we are holding an information session on Wed 28th April at 3:15pm for parents and carers outlining how to prepare for your student’s transition from school. All families are invited to attend, however we strongly encourage families of students in Years 10, 11, 12 to take the opportunity to attend. We have invited a small cross section of service providers that are integral to the post school transition process for our wide range of students. These include NDIS services and coordinators, Centrelink, post school employment and day program providers, and recreation services. Please see flyer for more details.
DHS OUTREACH
Willis and John welcomed Ashley, Tiler and Moise to DHS Outreach this year. We certainly miss having a female student in our class especially after having had the young lady we had in our class last year. We do however have some wonderful discussions about current events and the work we are doing.
Ashley is studying a mainstream subject called Integrated Technology and we are all looking forward to seeing the product he produces for the course. Moise is learning auto skills and manufacturing so is only with us at DHS for two days. He is very busy on those two days doing his work and improving his literacy. We are all very proud of the work he is doing. John and Willis have started their work experience at Henbury on Aralia doing the food preparation for the café. Tiler is studying science and getting to go on some interesting excursions.
Ashley, Moise and John work with Matumba in Garden Crew and they are enjoying learning new skills and putting those skills into practice. Willis is working with Shannon doing horticulture and getting items ready for sale at Henbury on Aralia.
Our favourite time of the week are the sessions we are studying The Positronic Man novel. We are doing lots of predicting what we think will happen and we are astounding Ms Kate and Rod with our ability to read and the quality of our questioning and discussions. We love tying what we are reading to history and the space race as we all love these subjects.
For Harmony Day we taught other students how to do the “Haka”. We also helped serve the luncheon and enjoyed spending the day at Henbury.

PURPLE 5
Hi from Purple 5! This year we have 6 students in our class, all boys! Hi from Callum, Jacob, Zac, Jacky, Jordan and Ryan.
One part of our very busy timetable this Term is the Deadly Choices Program. Kirra Muggeridge visits us each Wednesday morning from Danila Dilba Health Services. Each sessions consists of Kirra sharing messages about the benefits of our students making healthy choices in their lives, followed by a fun game or activity. Kirra makes all sessions fun, relevant and interactive, which has ensured great participation from our boys so far. Deadly Choice subjects covered this Term are – Leadership, Chronic Disease, Smoking, Nutrition, Physical Activity and Healthy Relationships.

NEW STAFF PROFILE - MATT VAUGHAN
My name is Matt Vaughan and I started teaching at Henbury in one of the Dripstone Outreach Classes in Term 4 last year. I took over from Cam Lobos and have been enjoying every minute so far! I was born and raised in Darwin before moving to Melbourne after I finished High School. I studied a Bachelor of Education focusing in Special Education at RMIT and graduated in 2017. I then taught for the next 3 years at Concord Special School with Year 9/10 students before moving back home to Darwin in October last year.
I love teaching and learning about Technology and have spent the start of this year teaching the IT Skill Set for Middle years which has been a lot of fun!
I also love cricket, playing all my junior cricket for Nightcliff Cricket Club. I’m always happy to talk about the Australian Cricket Team or the Melbourne Stars.
NEW STAFF PROFILE - EZRA WOODWARD
My name is Ezra Woodward this is my first year as a SESO at Henbury. I’m 23 years old, I was born and raised in Darwin. Before starting at Henbury I predominantly worked as a Market Trader.
My family have always been involved in disability respite and special needs education. I grew up alongside multiple special needs children that I consider family.
I’m so excited to start my career in education at Henbury where I can learn and grow as an individual.
CHANEL ISLAND POWER STATION EXCURSION
On Thursday the 18/3/2021 the Senior Science Skillset learnt about power generation in the Northern Territory as part of their unit of work “Get Wired”. Viqar Ali and Jeannie McInnes came to Henbury School for an informative presentation and discussion about power generation with the students. We were then escorted to Channel Island Power Station where Tony and Jeannie took us on the bus tour of the power station to point out all the major components of the site.
Some of the things we learnt:
- “How the power generation worked.”- Liam
- The fuel source was gas, which was used to create steam.
- Big turbines turned to generate electricity.
- The cooling water was so pure that it could kill you if you drink it.
- “They hate every colour of the rainbow, they only have grey.”- Tiler
- The power outage we had last year was not caused by Territory Generation.
- “Like to meet new people”- Deacon
- “Like the balloon lightbulbs and USB fans”- Anastasis
- “Enjoy filming the excursion from the bus”- Lachlan

PARA OLYMPIC VISIT
This morning we had a visitor at Henbury. She is the best wheelchair Olympian in Australia. Her name is Eliza-Ault and Jenny is her manager.
Eliza was talking about her lifestyle change at the age of 16 when she nearly died from Meningococcal. Eliza started wheelchair racing then she stopped because she had three children. When they grew older they saw their mother Eliza in the photo doing a race in her wheel-chair and they said that she looks cool.
Then Eliza realized that she had to go back on the track and race again. Today she said that she did morning training before she came to school and talk to us.

This morning we had two visitors at Henbury School, their names were Eliza and Jenny was her manger. They are going to the Olympic Games in Japan. Eliza talked about training and her change of life style when she started wheelchair racing and how she joined. In 2002 Commonwealth games she won the bronze medal. Eliza is hoping to win the 2021 Olympic gold medal in Tokyo this year.

NORTHERN TERRITORY LEARNING COMMISSION (NTLC) 2021
This year’s NTLC students have started the year at a fast pace. In week 6 there was an election on Henbury Campus. Students who nominated campaigned for a week with posters and word of mouth of what they would bring to the Learning Commission. Students and staff voted for who they would like as their Learning Commissioner.
The selected students for the Learning Commission had a visit at school from Amanda Bickerstaff from PIVOT. The PIVOT survey has 10 questions and allows students to give feedback on their learning experience. Students sat with Amanda, and discussed data and making the PIVOT survey more user friendly for all students at Henbury.
In week 8, students went to The Hilton to meet other Learning Commissioners and discuss what they could do at school to support their peers.
