Welcome to Term Three!

I really can’t believe we are already half way through the year. We have a very exciting term ahead of us with Science Day, Kids Teaching Kids, Batchelor Camp and Father’s Day Stall. We also have Gail Preston, Structured Teaching Practitioner, visiting classes from the 25 to 27 August. Gail will complete observations and work with staff to improve their practice in Structured Teaching.

All payments for the School Camp are required NO LATER than Friday 6 August.

We finished last term with the opening of our newly constructed basketball court at our end of term assembly. For this special assembly we set up on the basketball court and were blessed with some beautiful dry season weather. Education Minister, Lauren Moss MLA joined us to cut the ribbon for the official opening. There is a wonderful short clip that Minister Moss’ team created of the event. We shared this on our Henbury FaceBook site and you can view it here

https://www.facebook.com/HenburySchool/

Semester 1 subject reports went home at the end of last term. It was a pleasure to read each individual student report and see not only the varied and enriching programs being offered but also the progress and achievements of each student. If your child’s report did not make it home please contact the front office to follow up.

Congratulations to the 22 students who competed in the Darwin Region Interschool Athletics Carnival at Marrara on the last day of the Term Two. A huge shout out to Rowan Barrow and her team of staff who ensured our students were looked after on the day.

The Coronavirus situation continues to be an unpredictable and evolving situation. Hotspots remain in place, so please follow the health advice listed on the Coronavirus website here

Coronavirus (COVID-19) (nt.gov.au)

Students and staff who are showing flu like symptoms are NOT to come to school. Any person who does show up with these symptoms will be sent home.

It is a requirement that if you enter the school building that you check in using the Territory Check In app or sign in. Please also use the hand sanitizer provided and practice social distancing. If the office has more than 5 people waiting, please wait outside until someone leaves.

I received my 2nd dose of the Coronavirus vaccine and am encouraging all staff to get vaccinated to protect themselves and the vulnerable people in our community. Harry’s Place next door is offering a vaccination service for anyone who works and/or lives with people who have a disability. Alternatively you can book at other centers online here.

We will continue to keep you informed through our FaceBook posts and newsletters. If there is any imminent concerns we will send out a message through Schoolzine. Please also refer to the Northern Territory Government Coronavirus website to stay informed of the latest updates.

Unfortunately due to the uncertainty on Coronavirus and the risk of lockdowns, we will not be going ahead with our major fundraising event, the Henbury Corporate Luncheon, again this year. It is a time consuming event to prepare for and without complete certainty and the risk that a large event like this may expose our students, with thought it best to wait for 2023. Yes, we are not going away and we are also planning to spread some Christmas cheer with our Crew’s N Brew coffee Trailer heading around town again this year.

On Monday 23 August our whole staff will be participating in MAPA (Management of Actual or Potential Aggression) training. This is a course that our staff are required to complete every two years to ensure we are suitably trained and up to date with the current content in this space. This will be a PUPIL FREE DAY, no classes will run on campus or in any of our outreach schools. If you require care for you child/ren on this day, please contact Sam at SR@H on 89977099

UNIFORMS and PHONES

Please work with us in enforcing the following rules. This helps our teachers to focus on the education of students and decreases undesirable student behaviour and WH&S risks.

PHONES

If your child needs to have a phone coming to and from school they are to be handed into the class teacher or as they arrive into the ladies at the front office. If students are caught with them during the day they will be confiscated and a parent/carer will need to collect them from the front office. If your child wants to talk to you through the day, we have phones in every classroom and your child just needs to let their teacher know.

SCHOOL SHIRT

All students unless they are wearing a uniform for work training, must where the school shirt. Parents/carers will be called to provide a reason why the student is not in their school uniform. We do have some spare shirts in the office for emergencies if required. Not wearing the school uniform has been linked to undesirable behaviour and is a concern for WH&S.

LARGE NECKLACES, EARINGS and BANDANAS (generally worn around the wrist)

This is currently an issue with our male students. The above items are not part of the school uniform and are NOT to be worn. Aside from the many behavioural issues it creates they are also a WH&S concern.

EAP (Education Adjustment Plans years 7 to 9) and TEAP (Transition Education Adjustment Plans years 10 to 12) will occur at the end of this term between the 6 and 24 September. Staff will be allocated a day to book in meetings to review student goals and set recommendations for 2022.

As we prepare our new group of students to run the Henbury School café on Friday’s from 10am to 11am we will not be open to the public. Check our Henbury FaceBook page for when this will begin. Until then, remember our Henbury on Aralia Café is open from Thursday to Saturday. We hope to see you down there.

School Council meeting will be held in the conference room on Tuesday 28 July at 5pm.

Greg Robson will be Acting Principal of Henbury School whilst I am on three weeks of Long Service Leave between the 3 and 20 of August.

Looking forward to a successful semester!

Every Child Every Day! Please let us know if your child is absent.

REGIONAL SCHOOL SOCCER

On the 2nd of June students from Henbury school participated in a soccer gala day. Henbury had two teams that competed against other middle schools from across the Darwin region.

Students showed exceptional school values during the day; encouraging each other to try their best, showing team work, Respect and Resilience. Angus from DMS1 had this to say about the day, “I had so much fun on the soccer day. I saw a lot of friends from other schools. I enjoyed helping my team by encouraging them to spread out on the field. My Favourite part of the day was running towards the opposite team.” A huge thanks to Ms Carol, Mr Callum, Ms Maddi and Mr Dennis for taking the team and preparing us for the day.

NEW STAFF PROFILE – LAURA MACKIE

Hi my name is Laura Mackie and I’m the new manager of Henbury on Aralia. I have lived in Darwin for the past 20 years and absolutely love it! My favourite thing to do is fishing with my family. I previously managed Café Bella which was a Café similar to Henbury on Aralia. At café Bella I worked with young people with additional needs and found this very rewarding. I’m so glad I get to continue working in the hospitality/disability sector and look forward to getting to know all the Henbury students and staff.

Y2 NEWS

Last term we were busy finishing off some of our NTCETM tasks, learning about the Seasons of Kakadu and Australian Settlement through different books and the internet. We have taken this opportunity to explore Wet and Dry Season and the changes throughout the Territory during these times.

We learned about ourselves, our identity and who influences us. We are practicing using our Growth Mindset language throughout the day and have even started filling in our poster.

To support our personal growth on Tuesdays our brilliant SESO Doug has been leading our senior boys’ group in Rock and Water. Through Rock and Water, we have been developing self-confidence, self-reflection and resilience.

On a Wednesday you will find us somewhere in the community, exploring, learning and investigating different places from the Reference Library to the Museum, the Botanical Gardens and the beaches in between.

We’ve also been developing our Henbury Gym space. We painted the wall and added some gym equipment for the space. We hope to have our space up and running soon– Stay Tuned!

Our year 12’s will begin their transition into a workplace this term, they are all very excited. We are all very proud of them and the hard work they have put in.

INTERSCHOOL ATHLETICS

We had an amazing day with 22 students competing in running, jumping and throwing events. It was so wonderful, students making new friends on the track, building confidence to try new things and showing the Henbury school values. It’s a big day, with a lot of people and some students and staff stay on until the final race.

This cannot happen without the amazing support of the staff at our school. Firstly to Rowan Barrow who pulled our team together and made sure we were prepared before the event right through to the end of the event. A huge shout out also goes to Lucy, Callum, Amanda, Maddie, Aminah, Alison, Carol, Amy for your tireless effort on the day. All staff made sure the students are all cared and supported throughout the day.

All students that competed will receive something for their efforts and we look forward to the results and the selection for the next part of the Athletic pathway.
