PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
I want to thank all the students, families, and staff for a smooth start to 2022 despite the ongoing concerns of Covid-19 in our community. We have managed to keep the number of our Covid-19 positive cases in the school low. Regular testing of staff and a fulltime cleaner attending to high use surfaces, as well as regular hand washing and social distancing where possible, has supported us with our low number of cases. Thank you to parents and carers who have been extra vigilant in keeping students home when they are unwell.
We had our School Council AGM followed by our first School Council meeting on Wednesday 9th March.
The following positions were decided.
Chairperson |
Paula Callaghan |
Secretary |
Jacqueline O’Reilly |
Treasurer |
Helen Metcalfe |
Parent representative Sheena Baillie
We still have space for parent representatives. If you were unable to come to our AGM and are interested in supporting our School Council and the direction of Henbury School, please contact us at the school via henbury.admin@education.nt.gov.au .
A huge thank you to Paula, Jaqueline, Helen and Sheena who continue to volunteer their time for these positions.
Lauren Hofmeyer, one of our Assistant Principals, is spreading her wings to take up a position at Carpentaria Disability Services, (next door at Harry’s Place), for two years. Lauren is a respected and valued member of the Henbury team and her work to improve outcomes for students, supporting staff and her strong wellbeing focus will continue to leave an imprint at our school. Although she will be sorely missed at Henbury we look forward to our relationship with Carpentaria continuing to grow. Laurens last day is this Friday the 18th March. All the very best Lauren, from all the staff, students, and families at Henbury School. I’m sure we will see you around at our café.
Our Educational Adjustment Plan (EAP’s) meetings have begun this week. Parent involvement in these meetings are the key to ensuring we are working together as a team for the benefit of our young people. If you can’t make it in person there is the option of connecting online or via phone conference. Thank you to all the parents, carers and stakeholders who attend these meetings.
COVID UPDATES
- If your child is a close contact to someone in your household, the school can provide RAT tests for the 5 out of 7 days of the week the child comes to school. If they test negative on a school day and they are well, they can continue to attend school.
- School Council agreed to the lifting of masks last week. Students and staff are still encouraged to wear them if they can’t social distance.

STUDENT UPDATE FORMS
Student update forms will be sent home this week. Can you please check the information that we currently have and make any corrections that are necessary. It is important that we have updated emergency contact details at all times.
SCHOOL PHOTO DAY
A reminder that photo day is on Thursday 24th March. Please ensure that your child wears their uniform on the day and that order forms are sent back to school.
Contact the front office on 899 77077 if you have any further questions or if you require a replacement order envelope.
Back to School Voucher, Sports Voucher and Voluntary Contributions
The Northern Territory Government Back to School Voucher is $150. This money has to be acquitted by the end of Term 1. Parents/carers need to come into the Front Office and see Thalia or Jo. Vouchers can be used towards uniforms, book packs, bus levy, camp, year book and grooming.
The Sports Voucher is $100, available twice a year.
Physical $100 sport vouchers are no longer being issued through schools.
From the beginning of each school semester, parents or carers must apply online for each child. To apply for a sports voucher please go to the website below:
https://sportvoucher.nt.gov.au/
Voluntary student contributions are $100.00/year. The school has EFTPOS facilities and these voluntary contributions can be paid at the Front Office.
Scholastics book club orders
Scholastics Issue 2 is now out with heaps of specials. Hard copy catalogues were sent home last week. Don’t forget that our school receives bonus points to purchase books and resources with every purchase that our parents make.

Schoolzine Phone App
Henbury School currently uses Schoolzine to publish newsletters throughout the year. The school newsletter is an important communication tool to inform our school community of student learning, important notices and upcoming events.
In an attempt to increase accessibility to this service we would like to introduce the Schoolzine app.
This is a free app that can be easily downloaded onto any iPhone or android device which allows school newsletters to be viewed conveniently on any smartphone or tablet device.
To download this app please see information attached. Please ask at the front office for assistance if required.
SWIM TEACHER RESCUE TRAINING
A big thanks to staff that have attended our annual Swim Teacher Rescue training to update their CPR and Swim safety awareness. This allows our staff to maintain their skills and knowledge to then deliver water therapy sessions for our students in our Henbury School Pool.
Working together to build a healthy, happy, and safe aquatic community through access to water safety education and training.

TOTAL RECREATION - NDIS PROGRAMS
For the first time Total Recreation are advertising 12 months of NDIS programs, combining their favourite activities and programs from Social, Arts, Travel, Fitness, Sport and Youth.
Total Recreation is excited to launch their new, My Project initiative, under NDIS. This provides members with support to design and participate in their own projects. The ‘My Arts’ pilot program initiative saw members research, design, produce and sell their very own craft creations at the craft fair!
Please see the attached 2022 Program Handbook and Membership Interest form.
More information is available on their new website at www.totalrecreation.org.au or give them a call on (08) 8981 3686 for more information.
SENIOR SKILL SET COOKBOOK GROUP
Hello, this is Snaha and Azaria from the Senior Skill Set Cookbook Group. We are creating a cookbook for the whole school to use and to sell at our Henbury Op Shop, Henbury on Aralia Café, at the front office and at our school gift stalls.
We are asking our families, classes and staff to submit their favourite recipes so we can include them in the cookbook.
We are looking for all types of recipes, including:
- Sweets and desserts
- Savoury and dinner meals
- Snacks and appetizers
- Breakfasts recipes and lunches
- Dishes from different countries and cultures
- And any other recipes you think would go well in our cookbook
We ask all families to send in at least one recipe (or more!). Please put your student’s name on the recipe.
You can either email your recipe(s) to henbury.admin@education.nt.gov.au or send in a paper copy to the front office.
Thank you for helping us to create our Henbury School Cookbook.

Greetings from P2 class
What a great start to 2022 for P2! We love working together and having great morning conversations discussing everything from what we had for breakfast that day to our favourite movies and other great topics. It’s already Week 6, the time has flown by but we are so proud of how much we have achieved and done so far. We have gotten so quick at knowing our friends of 10 numbers, writing in our chat book, practicing keeping our handwriting small and neat, making dog biscuits to sell at the café, sports sessions with the visiting SEDA hosts, woodwork with Vince, Farm with Matumba and performing arts on Thursday where we get to sing or do bucket drumming! It’s been a lot of fun so far and we are excited about spending the year together.
Zy likes to go to Woodwork, he is making a T Rex! He enjoys the class cooking program and has made some good new friends in P2 and during play times with the rest of the ‘tip crew’.
Jaiken likes working in the Café for skill sets, playing tip at break times, drawing in free time and learning maths with the class.
Dekkie has been doing lots of writing, drawing and maths. He loves working in the Café every Tuesday cooking brownies and making frappes for our student customers. He likes maths time because of the friends of 10 games we play and singing his heart out in choir each Thursday!
Kyan is a great help during cooking and has worked hard at completing all his activities.
Kaleb has been a great friend to everyone and always excitedly takes part in lessons. He is a champ at Uno!
Duane has drawn some great art this term and has worked hard to finish his set tasks.

YELLOW 4
Yellow 4 are learning about money smart shopping skills. We are comparing supermarket NEEDS and WANTS when purchasing food for the Nutrition Program. So far, we have discovered that an item on SPECIAL is not always a NEED and we still need to budget our money for WANTS like treat foods.

PURPLE 3
Purple 3 is a class of 7 students. We have 3 Year 8’s (Nick, Bonnie and Chantelle) and 4 Year 7’s (Lashyah, Max, Aiko and Dixon) students. Brittany, Leanne and Phylly are the staff in the class.
We have been enjoying getting to know one another and the school grounds.
Aiko is loving woodwork with
Vince, bike riding and playing tip with her friends.
Lashyah is looking forward to beginning the
swimming program at school and loves helping others in her class.
Nick has been enjoying cooking with the class and
bucket drumming on Thursday’s.
Bonnie and Chantelle
are looking forward to working at Henbury on Aralia on Friday’s and have
been great role models to all the students in class.
Max is looking forward to starting the Rising
Stars Basketball program and showing off his skills.
Dixon has been exploring the school grounds and
showing everyone his cheeky personality. He has loved the liberty swing and
hanging out with his friends.
We look forward to getting to know each other better throughout the year

PURPLE 4
We have had a great start to the year in Purple 4. We welcomed 3 new grade sevens, Mark, Oliver, and Vlad. They have joined Cindy, Jacky, Lilly, and Ryan. The class has meshed really well. Highlights so far have been cooking, online shopping, working in the garden, BTN, and Skillsets. Our cohort is really creative. They have produced some great art pieces for the class, as well as dabbled in some performing arts. Last week we enjoyed community access at Nightcliff foreshore where we had lunch and explored the surroundings. Our class works enthusiastically maintaining the garden, with everyone demonstrating great initiative and work ethic. As an enterprise, our class is making amazing choc chip cookies for the café. We are excited to see if everyone enjoys them as much as we do.
