PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Welcome to the end of term 1, 2022. It has been a demanding yet productive term as we juggled increased staff and student absences due to COVID-19 and continued to run our school programs and individual student Education Adjustment Plan (EAP) meetings.

Thank you to parents, carers and key stakeholders who met with their teaching team to collaborate on setting goals for 2022. Our staff have been using data from the Ability Based Learning and Education Support (ABLES) assessment to support their decisions around setting goals.

“ABLES provides teachers and schools with evidence-based curricula, teaching strategies and resources to support the development of targeted learning programs and support schools to help every student with a disability meet their individual learning goals.”

https://www.education.vic.gov.au/Documents/school/teachers/teachingresources/diversity/ablesintroguide.pdf

This year we have implemented a whole school goal bank to our EAP’s, which is the culmination of three years of work by our Whole School Data Team. This will help us analyse data and see gaps and trends to support student learning and make decisions on resourcing. For parents this means the way your child’s goals look in the report will be different from previous reports. EAP’s will be sent home early Term 2. If you have any questions, concerns or feedback about your child’s EAP, please contact your teacher or a member of the leadership team.

This term, we said goodbye to Lauren Hofmeyer (Assistant Principal) who has taken a position next door at Carpentaria Disability Services. Although we are sad to see her go, we know Lauren will continue to connect with Henbury School and be an advocate for post school pathways in her new role.

We also said goodbye to Callum Kanaris. Callum was a much respected SESO across the school who always had a smile. We wish Callum all the best in his move to South Australia. Callum who was working in our SMS Outreach class will be replaced by Leanne Chalker.

NTLC News

On Thursday the 10th of March, Henbury School ran its yearly Northern Territory Learning Commission (NTLC) Election. This year had a lot of interest from students with almost 50 students nominating to be this year’s Learning Commissioners.

BBQ’s are very important on election day.

The following students were successful in becoming this year’s Learning Commissioners. Kinisha M, Kasey D, Lily Rose G, Morgan P, Ryan H, Reece P, Jovanni H, Cloe R, Hannah Z, Jake W, Shawn M, Roanin S, Kate C and Enrique B. Well done guys. The students have taken on their new responsibility with enthusiasm and are already working hard to support their peers and to make sure that everyone’s voices are heard at Henbury School. The Learning Commissioners are meeting up weekly, have attended a conference at the Turf Club, participated in a PIVOT survey and are getting ready to lead this Terms assembly. Students are also working on two big projects - watch this space.

Circle of Dreamtime art project

Ingrid Gersmanis has been our Artist in Residence over the last few months.

The central idea of the project was to create a meeting place representing the 51% Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at the school.

This mosaic was made possible by Arts NT by way of a successful ‘Artists in Schools’ grant by Sandra Lancaster. The project has 3 elements to it. The first is the 6.7 metre panel which depicts NT flora and fauna (including bush tucker).

The second panel is 9 metres long and represents the Rainbow Serpent. After consultation with Larrakia Elder Tony Lee it was decided to use the most local image of the rainbow serpent which has the head of a crocodile and the tail of a fish with water lilies (as shown in images ranging from the Daly River region thru to Arnhem land.) Inside the rainbow serpent are all his creations from the plants, animals, billabongs and landscapes.

The third part of the project is the 7 round pavers. 6 of these depict Dreamtime animals or insects which relate to particular tribes: - crocodile, dingo, emu, caterpillar, cod fish (or barramundi), and bush native bee.

The 7th paver is a memorial to Jack Parker where individual tiles were made by his friends, teachers and classmates.

It has been a pleasure to work with all the wonderful students and their teachers to achieve these images in clay and a challenge to fit them all in. Thankyou everyone involved.

Artist in Residence,
Ingrid

SRA Social and recreational activities

DHS Outreach class

Moise, Tiler and Ashley welcomed Mez, Antonia and Snaha to DHS Outreach this year. It is so good to have both young ladies and young gentlemen in our class this year and our discussions sometimes reflect this.

Ashley and Moise are learning auto skills and Mez does manufacturing. All students are studying a Retail Certificate – either at level 1 or level 11. Ashley has two mainstream subjects to keep him very busy. All students are also studying Business and Innovation based on the work they are doing or have done at Henbury on Aralia.

Mez in enjoying working with Matumba in Garden Crew. Moise chose Sports and Recreation and hopes to get back to it in full when his shoulder injury heals. Antonia and Snaha are excited to be doing Cooking, Communication and Design. Tiler is working on special projects with Ms Kate and Ms Emma to gain points for his Northern Territory Certificate in Education Modified. Antonia joins the Choir for Performing Arts while Snaha enjoys Bucket Drumming.

One of our favourite times of the week are the sessions we are studying “If Only They Could Talk” a novel by James Herriot. We are doing lots of predicting what we think will happen and we are astounding Ms Kate and Rod with our ability to read and the quality of our questioning and discussions. As a group we like learning from the past and gaining more knowledge of history.

We enjoy working at Henbury on Aralia on Thursdays and coming back to Henbury to see our friends on Fridays.

P5 class

Welcome to P5. This year we have Kinisha and Martika who have joined Morgan, Jordan, Angela, Sierra and Marcius to make up a great class. It has been a busy term so far with students participating in NT Learning Commission, Henbury on Aralia work experience, Rising Stars basketball & sweet treat baking (P5 enterprise). Some of the sweet treats we have made so far are rocky road, lemon and coconut slice, caramel slice and peppermint slice. For community access we have been enjoying our time out and about. Our learning commissioners Kinisha and Morgan joined other schools at the pavilion this term to discuss their role as a learning commissioner and review data collected from previous years. Sierra and Angela have been busy serving customers at our HOA café whilst Jordan, Marcius and Kinisha have been busy joining the Rising Stars teams each Friday where they practice their basketball skills against other teams. Martika has been busy helping grow plants in the Horticulture skillset. We look forward to continuing these programs next term.

CSC 1,2,and 3

Casuarina Senior College Outreach have kicked the year off with a fun filled educational program. Some of the wonderful activities that we have been doing are Art, Cooking, Sports, Textiles, Math games and Woodwork.

One of the many highlights over the Term was the collaboration with Casuarina Senior College’s Japanese Language class to run a combined cross curricular lesson on Japanese cooking. This involved us preparing and sharing cultural dishes from Japan and Australia.

Another highlight was our weekly trips to Casuarina Square. These trips were filled with shopping, socialising and yummy treats.

We all look forward to an exciting Term 2, filled with many more great highlights.
