ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

It is hard to believe we are already into Term 2. Thank you to all staff and families for making Term 1 successful as we faced the challenges through COVID. While we expect more challenges this term, I have no doubt we will be successful again and continue the great learning that occurred in Term 1.

Thank you to parents and staff who have collaborated to formulate individual student goals in Term 1. We value the input of families in this process to ensure our students are accessing the curriculum to the best of their ability and to continually build a strong connection between home and school. A signed copy of the 2022 Transition/ Educational Adjustment Plans will be sent home shortly. Don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns concerning this document.

There will be pupil free days on Thursday 12th and Friday 13 May to allow teachers to participate in The Read Write Inc. Fresh Start - Fast track program professional development days. This is an integral part of Henbury’s whole school improvement plan and will benefit all students in their English programs. SRA@H will be open on this day for families who require care. Please call Sam on 89977077 if you want to discuss this further.

On Sunday, 22 May, the Deckchair Cinema will be showing the Movie Sonic 2, with all proceeds going to Henbury School. Tickets can be purchased through the Deckchair Cinema or by following this link:

Congratulations to the students who represented Henbury at the Darwin Middle School Soccer competition. All had fun, and all players did their best and were great ambassadors for Henbury School.

In Week 2, some of our senior students participated in a two-day DriveSafe NT workshop held at our CSC1 Outreach classroom. Students unpacked the road rules with the facilitator and developed their knowledge of driver safety. Needless to say, we now have some very excited students with their learner’s licence.

Please remember to support our student training facilities on Aralia Street at Nightcliff. The Henbury Op Shop is open Mon-Fri 8:30am – 4pm and Saturday 8:30am-2pm. Henbury on Aralia Café is open Thurs and Friday 9:30 – 1:30 and Saturdays 9am – 1pm. The more customers we have, the more learning opportunities for our students, and the sustainability of these enterprises.

Save the Date! Henbury has its 40th Birthday on Wednesday 22 June between 5 and 7 pm. It would be great to see as many past and present students and families help us celebrate such a momentous occasion.

Assistant Principal

GREETINGS FROM DMS1

DMS1 and DMS2 have been enjoying Community Access excursions to learn about the Darwin’s historic past. So far, we have explored World War II buildings at East Point and plan to visit the bunkers at Casuarina beach, the war memorial on the Esplanade, and oil tunnels in Darwin city. After exploring East Point, DMS1 students recreated the landmarks in Minecraft. They enjoyed working together as a team and look forward to our future adventures.

HELLO FROM DMS2

This year saw 8 new students start at Henbury School and join in with Chloe at Dripstone Middle School Outreach 2. The class settled into the new year quickly and got straight into their learning. For novel studies, the students started to read the Barrumbi series. The class were fortunate to have had a zoom session with Leoni Norrington – Author of the Barrumbi series, where they asked a lot of questions and where Leoni shared her stories from school.

The class continue to run their business, Henbury Healthy Chefs. This is a great opportunity for students to cook healthy meals, while working on recipes, cleaning, money (budget and profit and loss) and measurement.

CELEBRATIONS IN GREEN 1

There has been much to celebrate in Green 1 this year!

After waiting patiently for COVID restrictions to ease, we were delighted to show off our communication skills at Casuarina Coffee Club and Coles in Term 1. We also thoroughly enjoyed our end of term lunch at McDonalds!

We have had not one, but two milestone birthday celebrations, with Tom turning 18 and John turning 30. Our gluten free chocolate birthday cupcakes were a huge hit!

Toby is next to turn 18! Our party preparations are well underway and our Cha Cha Slide dance moves are ready!

Last week we were thrilled to contribute to the Henbury School Recipe Book. We worked as a team to prepare our meal to ensure it passed Green 1’s taste test. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

HENBURY MEANINGFUL MATHS CONFIRMING SESSION

Classroom teachers met up on Tuesday the 3rd of May to share their assessment pieces with other teachers. The confirming session happened after school and gave teachers the opportunity to ask questions, assist their peers and develop a whole school assessing consistency. Teachers met in smaller groups and discussed the Number Framework, JAM and GLoSS assessment.

There were rich conversations had by all. It was also a great opportunity for teachers to view other students’ assessment piece and witness the growth in the Maths learning.

NMS OUTREACH CONTRIBUTION TO ANZAC DAY

Briseis (in the mask) and Xyalliaih danced in a performance they have been taught during their mainstream electives at NMS. The choreography was matched to the song “Higher Love”, a reflection piece in honour of the soldiers who have sacrificed their lives when fighting for freedom. Very touching performance. I have saved a short snippet of the video but you will need to open it with VLC Media or equivalent. The clarity of the photos are poor due to screenshots of video from the back of a large audience.

ANZAC DAY SERVICE

Thank you Amanda and NTLC for another memorable ANZAC service this morning.

The live bugle by Robin Kidney was a very fitting touch, as was the attendance by Royal Australian Airforce Flying Officer, Morgen Parr Grass and Leading Aircrafts woman, Gemma Marning.

Thank you to all the classes who went to such great efforts to make wreaths.

DARWIN REGION MIDDLE YEAR SOCCER

On Friday the 29th of April Henbury students attended the Darwin Region Middle Year Soccer Gala day with other schools from the northern suburbs. A successful event that was enjoyed by all staff and students. Our scores for the day were:

Team Outreach 2 had a draw and finish 4 out of 5.

Team Outreach 1 had 2 wins and 2 losses and finished equal second.

Henbury ended up fielding 21 students in total! This is a remarkable effort from our students and our community.

A huge thank you to our staff, Carol, Emma, Lucy, Maddi and Alison who took the students out.

Some students comments from the day!

Riley: “My favourite memory from soccer was saving a goal by punching the ball away from the soccer net! I went to soccer because I wanted to try something I hadn’t played in a while, it was fun.”

Reecee: “I enjoyed seeing my friend from SEDA, I wanted to go because I haven’t played in a long time.”

Angus: “We ended up beating our record from last year by winning two games out of four!”

Marcus: “I enjoyed scoring one goal this year. In soccer you have to be fast.”

Leo: “I enjoyed running around. I wanted to try win but it didn’t matter if I lose, it was a fun game.”

CONGRATULATIONS KATE

Congratulations to our student Kate for winning the NTTBA Disabilities Bowler of the Year!
