ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

It is hard to believe we are already halfway through Term 3, and it has been a busy term. A big thank you goes out to all staff and students as we continue to face some challenges through Covid.

EAPs and TEAPs

Educational Adjustment Plan (EAP) year 7 to 9 and Transition Education Adjustment Plan TEAP year 10 to 12 Review Meetings

It is important that we capture parent voice in our review of student progress especially in relation to their EAP, T/EAP goals. This is also an opportunity and gather recommendations for the following year.

Looking at previous years, Henbury School has decided that a blanket face-to-face meeting does not meet the need of every family so this year we are offering different options in the hope we capture more families in this process.

Teachers will be contacting you this week to offer you the following options:

  • Option 1 - Face to Face meeting on campus (as in previous years)
  • Option 2 – Teams/ Skype conference
  • Option 3 – Phone conference

Meetings will begin from the 5th of September. Your teacher will be able to help you with a suitable time.

It is important that our graduating year 12’s and our year 11’s have a face-to-face meeting as there is important information to capture in these final years of schooling.

Science Day

Thank you to Carol and the entire Science Day team for organising another successful event at Henbury. Students enjoyed all activities; some of the favourites being the Watermelon Challenge, making ice cream using dry ice, shooting rockets, and recreating volcanic eruptions.

Camp

Senior students enjoyed an overnight adventure at Camp Wallaroo. All students challenged themselves by completing activities such as rock climbing, ab sailing, and the flying fox. They recharged their batteries, sleeping in tents then another full day of activities before heading back to Darwin.

Last week our Middle School students went to Batchelor Adventure Camp. We look forward to seeing what they got up to next newsletter.

Transition

Our Transition program is well underway. Year 6 students from Nemarluk have been visiting on Fridays and participating in games organised by some of the senior students. Nemarluk students are now staying and enjoying their recess play, mingling with Henbury students in the playground.

Several Year 9 students have started to visit Casuarina Senior College (CSC) and participate in a social skills program along with their peers for CSC outreach classes run by Balanced Choice.

As the year progresses, Transition Programs will continue to grow in length to help prepare students for 2023.

BLUE 4

Blue 4 have been working on a minor project. We are building a bench near the basketball court for students to use to cool down and relax. So far, we have cleared the area and set stirrups into concrete. We will keep you updated when construction is complete.

RISING STARS

Earlier this term our Rising Stars team had a fantastic opportunity to meet the ‘Hot shotters’ who are a team made up of adults preparing to play in the special Olympics! We kept our spirits high as their score increased, but ended up scoring a couple of goals in the last half…

All through the game our team showed all of the Henbury School Values; resilience, compassion, respect, responsibility and teamwork!

CSC 3

Each week CSC3 ventures to Casuarina Square for our shopping trip. The trip involves learning the art of smart shopping, looking at getting the best prices and keeping within a budget. We always have a great time, trying on new clothes, purchasing books, and ending the trip with a shared lunch in the food court.

As part of our Students teaching Students English program this term students developed and taught a lesson, sharing their skills with the class. Cloe taught us how to draw an anime face, she was a great teacher, with encouraging words and helpful tips to help us all achieve success.

On Science Day, CSC3 students did an amazing job helping teachers to run their events. Luke assisted Dave with the Dry Ice experiments; he oversaw making sure that all the experiments were conducted in a safe manner. He did a great job at kept everyone safe.

PURPLE 4

Purple 4 are fast becoming recycling and art wizards! Using a variety of recycled items, including, feathers, pop bottles, forks, balloons, scrap paper, bottle tops, lids and tubes gathered and saved from the rubbish they have gone on to create unique, imaginative masterpieces to adorn the classroom walls.

Some of the creations are finger painted. Some have been designed using unique new styles of brushes, such as feathers too. There’s lots of printing to make new images, such as flowers, of all different shapes. We have even painted seed pods to create something earthy and unusual.

Everyone can be an artist, and there are so many crazy, quirky items to help students be creative. Purple 4 have demonstrated this in their work and have worked hard to produce some beautiful work.

SCIENCE FAIR

Henbury Science Fair was held on Thursday the 18th of August.

The theme for this year’s science fair was Material World-Glass More than meets the eye!

Thank you to Pat and Tori who attended the sharing of DMS 1 and NMS outreach classes ways to save water. They were so impressed with the students work that they have requested copies to shared with other employees at Power and Water.

The human hover craft worked this year after a failed attempt in 2020.

The CO2 dragster took off like rockets or dragsters across the gym. They were so fast it was difficult to track with the human eye.

The inaugural Henbury Regatta and Marble run challenge was a huge success. The design of marble runs was beyond expectations and all classes should be congratulated. Blue 3 & 4 won the slowest marble run with a time of 16 seconds. NMS Outreach won the best overall design.

The regatta was won by Blue 2 narrowly defeating Green 2 in the final. Unfortunately, some of our staff toy sailors (stuffed toys) were a little bit saturated at the end of the race, however they did avoid being eaten by the can crocodile boat which fell apart during the voyage. Best design boat was CSC 2 for a simple design and economic use for materials.

Our guest visitors were Ashely Murdoch the Rocket man which was Jimmy’s from Blue 1’s favourite activity.

CSC students enjoyed AR station augmented reality hosted by Sue Carter. Looking inside the human body was amazing. Handling the reptiles from Darwin Wildlife Sanctuary was clearly the winning activity for Jashon form Sanderson Outreach.

Other activities included beach glass, sugar lollies, lenses and light, cork bottle target, volcanoes, disappearing rainbows, sensory station, dry ice disco, solar car races, microorganism, and wonderful water experiments. Congratulations to all students who shared experiments with the school the whole of Henbury School.

HENBURY PARENT INFO SESSION INVITE

HELLO FROM YELLOW 5

The students in Yellow 5 have had a busy and productive start to Term 3. They are continuing with their Northern Territory Certificate of Education and Training (NTCET) Learning Adjustment Plans (LAP). This term we are focusing on: English - Viewing and Responding to text; Mathematics – Financial and Shopping Skills; Health – Friendships and Relationships; Personal Learning Plan – Identifying Work Skills and Preparing for the Workforce. The Y5 students have been actively participating in various programs to compliment the topics discussed.

Some of our older students are attending work experience, Work Skill programs and completing TAFE courses. They work alongside mainstream students from other schools. This is marvellous opportunity for them to gain knowledge and assist in achieving skills and qualifications.

Last month the Y5 students went to Nightcliff Middle School to attend the Pathways to your Future Expo. The class found the whole experience very informative and inspired them to consider some other career options that they may not have considered before. Popular careers for the students were mining, tourism and hospitality.

YELLOW 3 PATHWAYS EVENT VISIT

7 senior students from Henbury went to Night Cliff Middle School on Monday, for an excursion to the Pathway to Your Future event.

We saw different stalls full of exciting jobs for when we leave school. We learned about how there are different type of jobs like tourism, mining, conservation, agriculture, hospitality, aquaculture and aged care.
