PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Welcome to Term Four! We have an exciting term ahead of us.
The last of our T/EAP review meetings are being completed over the next couple of weeks. This is an important part in reviewing your child’s goals and giving input into recommendations for the following year. We have trialed a more flexible approach to meeting with your child’s teacher this year, either face to face, video conferencing or over the phone, which seems to have allowed more parents and caregivers to connect with the school. If you still haven’t had the chance to connect with your child’s teacher, either at the end of last term or early this term, please contact them or the front office to arrange a time.
Our much-anticipated Halloween Disco is coming up Wednesday evening. We look forward to everyone coming along to enjoy the fun. Please see the poster in this newsletter for all the details.
AUSTRALIAN DISABILITY SERVICE AWARDS
We are thrilled to announce that Henbury School is a finalist in the 2022 Australian Disability Service Awards! We have been chosen in the Most Innovative Community Program category for our Henbury Learning Precinct which includes our Op Shop and Cafe. We are very grateful to be recognised amongst others across Australia for outstanding work within the disability service industry! The awards will be held on 9th November at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre.
WE ARE MOVING
Our Henbury on Aralia Precinct at Nightcliff, which includes our Op Shop and Café, have served us very well over the years. With the Op Shop opening at this premises in 2011 and the café following in 2019, we are very thankful to all those who have supported both businesses at our Nightcliff location. We are excited to share the news that we will be moving to The Village Shopping Centre at Casuarina. This new location is close to our school campus and is custom designed to suit our students’ needs. We can’t wait for everyone to see the new space. The Op Shop will be open early December. The café will open in early February when the students return for the new school year. You can stay updated by joining our school Facebook pages.

DARWIN AIRPORT CORPORATION CHARITY GOLF DAY
Henbury School is so very grateful to be the beneficiary of the 2022 Darwin Airport Corporation Charity Golf Day. We are overwhelmed with the generosity of those who supported this event. Thank you, Leanne Coburn and team, for such a great event. We know the power of work that is involved in running an event like this. Thank you also goes to our own staff and students who supported this fundraising event, especially Felicity Faull who wrote our application to be selected as a beneficiary and led our staff and students. The 60k will be going towards a more inclusive kitchen in our new enterprise at The Village Shopping Centre.
PIVOT
Our teachers having been using the Pivot survey tool to get feedback from their students to improve their teaching. The students give a score out of three. Below are our whole school results divided into areas for celebration and areas for conversation or growth. Our areas for conversation are our lowest scoring areas. It is pleasing to see these areas are still scoring quite high overall.
NT LEARNING COMMISIONERS
On 30 August, our NT Learning Commissioner’s shared their work with the Education Engagement team. They were truly inspirational and certainly created a space for the team to contemplate their work around student engagement. Our NTLC’s were congratulated with a standing ovation. Thank you, Amanda Thomas and our NTLC’s for their courage and commitment.

WORLD TEACHER’S DAY

B1 ARE WORKING ON THEIR COMMUNICATION SKILLS
B1 has worked hard on their communication skills over the past year. The students have chosen preferences, used sign language, a range of technology and visual pictures to communicate with staff. They have made Chat books, used PODD communication tools, switches, and Tobii devices just to name a few. We showed off some of our talents in assembly, performing the story of “The Mole who knew it was none of his business”, showing that all students have the ability to communicate. Students made props, selected their favourite characters, and performed in front of an audience. Well done Blue Crew.

BLUE 3
Hello from the artistic bunch in Blue 3. Our students have been participating in weekly art lessons. Lessons were taught via on online art tutorial website called DragoArt. This website teaches students how to sketch a variety of animated characters. Students received varying levels of support to follow the step-by-step instructions on creating the different stages of a sketched drawing. They also learnt how to give dimension to their characters by shading and blending the sketch markings. The attached student drawings include one piece of artwork from the start and one from the end of the term.

PURPLE 5
Hi everyone! You will find our class in Purple 5 this Semester. We were in Blue 4 in Semester 1. Miley, Tatiana and Charlie joined Mia, Keira and Andrew. We have a classroom which is purple which is teacher Cherry’s favourite colour. We also have a large undercover area to relax in. We have spent term 3 and 4 becoming good classmates and encouraging each other to improve our skills in Yoga.

In our creative sessions we have been Papermaking- using recycled, shredded paper and blending it and straining it on a special frame. It’s a fun, messy activity with a cool product at the end. It is especially beautiful if we do the bubble paint pictures on them, these make very good gift cards that we will be displaying at the end of the year!

Our communication skills have been focusing on using our communication devices and practicing sign.

MP with TN at the beach. Purple 5 class on the way to HOA.
We have been having outdoor adventures on community access. Last week we explored the beach at low tide at Lee Point. Mia was quick at catching the tiny sand crabs and Tatiana loved looking at the birds whilst everyone enjoyed collecting shells. Purple 5 have also been lucky enough to have been to Henbury on Aralia and to the all-access park in Jingili Water Gardens and even the Botanic gardens thanks to our community access chauffer Dave Panjer, thanks Dave!
HELLO FROM YELLOW 2
Over the last two Terms we have been enjoying our time out in the community with Yellow 5. We have visited East Point, the Museum, the Mangrove Boardwalk and even ventured out to Coolalinga and Palmerston. We celebrated Enrique’s 18th and Brodie’s 16th

We were lucky enough to participate in a few awesome school visits one from The Airforce to talk about Operation Pitch Black where we learnt about the fighter jets, midair refueling and got to ask a Pilot any questions we had, Thanks Miss Amanda for organising this. We were also lucky to be a part of Questacon’s visit where we got to investigate wind tunnels and create objects from a variety of materials to see if they float, fly or sink in a wind tunnel. Thank you Miss Carol for organising this for us.

Amongst all these exciting visits and excursions, we have also completed most of our NTCETM requirements this means that coming into Term 4 we can start some exciting projects preparing for Halloween and Christmas. We are all looking forward to celebrating our success at the end of term.
