ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

It’s hard to believe we are already halfway through Term Four! Thank you to all the families that took the time to meet with teachers on the phone or in person for students’ Education Adjustment Plan meetings. Your input is greatly appreciated.

Transition is Well Underway

Transition for 2023 is well underway. Year 6 students have been attending weekly, joining our Middle School Skill Set Program, then going into classrooms to meet the students they may be in class with next year. Students on campus have also been going into the classrooms they may be in next year, giving them the opportunity to meet their new classmates.

Disability Awards

Henbury School makes it to the Top 3 in the Australian Disability Services Awards

Out of over 350 nominations from across Australia, Henbury School was selected as one of three finalists in the category of Most Innovative Community Program! Thank you to all our staff and students who work so hard to make our work training programs so successful!

Apple for the Teacher

Hot 100 hosted their Apple for the Teacher in August. Two of our teachers were nominated for the award. Congratulations to Amanda Philp (B1) and Lucy Hartley (Y3) for making it to the final round of voting.

End of an Era

This week sees the end of era with the Henbury Café and Opportunity Shop on Aralia Street permanently closing at our Nightcliff premises. It is with great excitement than a new era begins with the Henbury Precinct Opportunity Shop opening at The Village Shopping Center at Casuarina. Trading will begin on Monday 5th December and the Café will open early in 2023. We will start taking donations for the Op Shop from 5th December.

Special Olympics

Congratulations to our students Kate, Toby, Hayley and Enrique who are participating in the Special Olympics in Launceston, Tasmania. We wish them all the very best.

Halloween Disco

On Wednesday 26 October students enjoyed our annual Halloween Disco. It was fantastic to see so many families attend and get dressed up for the occasion. Thank you to the planning committee for putting on such a successful event.

Attendance Matters!

The NTLC have been working hard each week to identify the 100% attenders! It has been fantastic to see the improvement in attendance for a large number of both campus and outreach students!

Remember if your child is absent, the school must be notified via their teacher or front office.

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE

Last week Henbury students and families were treated to several performances from our Performing Arts students. There was a combination of puppetry, animation and short films, and an incredible acting performance of Where the Wild things are. We were visited by local primary students from other schools for a couple of day shows, and families came along for a meal followed by the performance on Thursday evening.

Thank you, Flynn and Sarah P, and participating students for putting on such a fantastic show.

NTLC- PITCH TO THE MINISTER

Please see attached pictures of Henbury’s awesome Learning Commissioners at the Pitch to The Minister on 17 November. Alawa students said the Henbury group’s projects were the best there, and it was awesome to see Forest Parade recognise the work the NTLC students have done to support, mentor and assist with their project. All of Henbury Learning Commissioners were absolutely amazing and all had a huge part to play. It was a massive day for us all and I was proud to see Henbury’s values being displayed throughout the day.

This year’s Commissioners have worked so hard all year and I am one very proud teacher. Their work is not finished yet. They still have 2 assemblies and Hembury’s Best Last FriYAY ever.

Miss Amanda

BLUE 4

Hello everyone. This year we have worked on our nutrition and shopping program. As a class we work together organising our shopping for the week. We prefer to do our shopping online. The benefit for our class is items are easier to find that we have bought before, we can stick to our budget better, we know what is in stock and we find the process quicker.

We do our shopping on Fridays ready to be delivered on Monday morning. First we start with our menu planning. Everyone plans an individual menu for the week. Some choices include pineapple, mango, rice and spam, chicken and salad sandwiches, loaded potatoes and chicken wings.

When planning for our shopping we begin with filling out our menu plans. Then we add our items to a class shopping list. We check the fridge and pantry and check off what we need to make a final list. After our list is complete we all take turns in purchasing our items on the Coles website. On Monday morning our shopping gets delivered to the front office. Once collected we pack it away.

Student feedback:

Advantages-

  • Easier,
  • less confusing,
  • I don’t have to walk around searching where an item is
  • I feel independent
  • It’s quick and easy
  • We can make lists of our regular items
  • We can go to bought before for our favourite brands
  • We can check the nutritional info quickly
  • We love that it’s delivered to our door

Disadvantages-

  • Sometimes our preferred time is booked out
  • Sometimes they are late with our delivery
  • Sometimes they don’t have an item by Monday

We have tried both Woolies and Coles online and found the Coles site is more student/user friendly.

Everyone in the class agrees they love online shopping.

BLUE CYLCES

Henbury school secured a $4000 grant from Variety Club to carry out some much-needed maintenance on our general and modified bikes. Over two days the Blue Cycles maintenance team worked hard, causing much excitement to have such a fun range of bikes up and running again. A huge thanks to Blues Cycles, NT Triathlon and Variety for collaborating with us to make this happen. Henbury students will be able to work on their cycling skills in the lead up to the Henbury Triathlon in Week 9.

REMEMBERANCE DAY

Once again Henburys’ amazing Learning Commissioners led our annual Remembrance Day Ceremony. Kinisha and Cloe read beautiful poems, and all students in the learning commission had a huge and important part to play. We were fortunate to have Lieutenant Harry Nixon from the Royal Australian Navy attend. This year we had 3 students playing the didgeridoo. This was a wonderful addition to our ceremony and we will continue with this next year. Thank you to all the classes that came out to the flag poles, demonstrated respect, made wreaths and poppies.

ANOTHER BUSY TERM IN GREEN 1

We cheered Toby Reynolds on at the Special Olympics National Games in Launceston. He returned with not one but TWO medals for his efforts in bowling, which he proudly showed to his classmates on his return.

We had lots of creative fun making special creations for the Henbury School Art Exhibition. We mixed paint to create colours and experimented with different brushes and sponges. We’re excited to share the results with the rest of the school on 25th November!

Now, the countdown to graduation is on for Tom, Paulo and Toby! We’ve enjoyed reflecting on the amazing year that we have had together, showing off our communication skills when chatting about some of our favourite photos.

GREEN 2 COOKING UP A STORM

Green 2 have enjoyed trying out some of the tasty recipes from the Henbury School Cookbook during our class nutrition program this semester.

We are all big fans of both the Adobo Pork and Adobo Chicken Wings!

Everyone except Ezra enjoyed the sweet hit from the Ginger Biscuits

Green 2 is full of pasta fiends, so the Spaghetti Bolognaise was a firm class favourite

If you look carefully in the desserts, you might even find the secret recipe to Henbury on Aralia’s amazing Banana and Paw Paw Bread

We can also strongly recommend the Beef Stew with Mashed Potatoes, the Fried Rice and of course the delicious Tomato and Basil Pizza on Sweet Potato Base! Yummo!

If you haven’t already bought yourself a copy of the Henbury School Cookbook, do yourself a favour and pop on into the front office and see Thalia and Jo to order your own while stocks last.

ATHLETICS

On the 5th and 6th of November, 12 Henbury students represented Darwin Region Athletics Team at the NT Athletics Championships for 2022. It was a great experience with so many learning opportunities for cohort. Well done to everyone competing. A wonderful display of inclusion in our community and a chance for Henbury past and present students to shine. Thanks to everyone involved and especially Ms Sarah, Ms Amanda and Ms Anne Marie for helping Ms Rowan to manage the team. Another shout out to our incredible coffee crew replenishing the thirsty hot crowd! Winning all round.

Well done to the Henbury students past and present for competing with your athletics club. Congratulations

Thanks to Athletics NT for making everyone feel so welcome, thanks to parents and carers for supporting the students to participate and thanks to the sponsors for the donations for helping with funding.
