ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Can you believe it is the end of Term One? Time flies when you’re having fun! It has been wonderful to see classes engaged in their learning in and outside of the classroom.

T/EAP MEETINGS

T/EAP meetings have almost come to a close. It has been a pleasure to work with families to develop students’ learning targets for the year and celebrate their strengths and successes.

SWIM TEACHER RESCUE

In week 8 we invited Rowan Barrow back to Henbury School to deliver the Swim Teacher Rescue course. Over 35 staff attended and now have the safety qualification to support students in their hydrotherapy, swimming lessons and leisure sessions in the pool.

SCHOOL COUNCIL

A reminder that if you would like to have a say in how our school operates, we encourage any new or existing parents to join our School Council. We would also like to encourage an indigenous voice for our school council as we have 52% indigenous students. You don’t need any experience to join, just a passion to provide the best for your child. We meet two or three times a term on Wednesday from 4:30 to 5:30 (times/days can be altered to suit the cohort of parents on the committee). See the upcoming events section for meeting times in Term 2.

Henbury Precinct Staff Profile

Matumba Isis

Hi my name is Matumba and I’m originally from Jamaica. My background is in the British Army, Hairdressing in London for 15 years, studying Environmental Science before arriving in Australia. I started a Psychology Degree and then decided to do Teaching instead.

My hobby is in Permaculture and this is what lead me to run the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation Program at Henbury School.

I’m growing things at the Henbury Farm through the SAKGP and it’s a good way to use the produce and teach the classes how to grow, harvest, prepare, cook and share food. Our herbs, fruit and vegetables can be tasted from the extensive menu items at the Henbury Precinct Café.

Matumba was in the kitchen last week, working with students, making paw paw chutney. Keep your eyes peeled, as in the near future jars of delicious homemade chutney will be on the shelves at the Cafe.

Janna Bryce

Hi, I’m Janna and I’ve been teaching at Henbury School since August 2021.

I Grew up in Bendigo and before moving to Darwin I taught art/design/textiles at 2 previous schools.

My hobbies are sports, being outdoors and anything creative.

As the Enterprise Education Teacher I support students to learn a wide range of creative artmaking skills including sewing, jewellery making, printmaking, tie dye and more, to make handmade products to sell at the Henbury Precinct Cafe and the very popular market stalls throughout the year at Henbury School.

Students develop a knowledge in all aspects of running a small Enterprise, ordering materials, stocktaking, pricing and ways to display our pieces for extra impact and effective use of space.

Our newly made creations will be available for purchase very soon.

HELLO FROM ALL OF US AT DARWIN HIGH

This year we have six students in our class. Ryan and Jordan are in year 10, Snaha and Antonia are in year 11, Ashley and Mez are in year 12. We have had a busy but fun start to the year, and it’s hard to believe that the term is already nearing its end.

Here are some of the things that our class has enjoyed this term:

  • Getting to know each other
  • Playing games in PE
  • Reading the novel ‘Blueback’ by Tim Winton
  • Keeping up to date with current events from around Australia and the world
  • Working at Henbury Precinct each Friday
  • Learning about the history of chocolate
  • Celebrating International Women’s Day and Harmony Day
  • Learning about Ramadan
  • Listening to Mez’s jokes
  • Senior Skill Sets each Thursday at Henbury
  • Practicing our literacy and numeracy skills
  • Taking our learning outside

We can’t wait to share more of our experiences and learnings with you all as the year continues to unfold.

HELLO FROM BLUE 1

We have had a terrific start to Term 1. With new staff and students, we have had a great time settling into our routines and getting to know each other.

We have been on some excellent community access adventures. We completed the Mangrove walk out at East Point, did a big lap of Jingili water gardens, ate some hot chips at East Point and visited the school Café.

Swimming is one of our favorite activities to do together, so is eating the delicious treats from the Henbury Farm. We are all looking forward to Term 2!

Congratulations to Kinisha who was elected to the NTLC by her peers and to Lucie, Morgan and Kinisha who all work at the Henbury Cafe on Thursdays!

WELCOME FROM PURPLE 5

Hello from Purple 5!

In our classroom we have a wonderful group of students and staff with big and beautiful personalities and lots of fun! This term we have gotten to know each other and form friendships, focusing on respectful interactions and safe play.

The students have enjoyed learning about the lifecycles of caterpillars, collecting larvae from the farm, baby caterpillars and eventually a cocoon! We’ve had lots of fun making all kinds of arts and crafts around this area of learning.

Another favourite of our enthusiastic learners is community access, shopping on Mondays and Out and About on Fridays. The students enjoy putting together shopping lists, finding the items and helping with the trollies. Excursions to Nightcliff foreshore and to East Point to feed the horses carrots and apples have been a huge highlight in our adventures as well.

We love Purple 5 and all the incredible personalities that it consists of.

Have an awesome Easter everyone, from p5.

GREEN 2 HARD AT WORK

Green 2 have been hard at work investigating fun things to do over the school holiday. We have put together some information pages that we would like to share with our parent/carers. All of our information was gathered from official websites of specific locations.

PS - Special mention to the Clubhouse Territory event Friday 14th which will is FREE and so jam-packed that there should be something to interest all of our students!

Cheers Jodi & the Green 2 mob

HARMONY DAY CELEBRATIONS

Harmony Week is an annual week to celebrate multiculturalism, diversity and share the message that everyone belongs in our communities. On Tuesday 21st March Henbury School celebrated Harmony Day. Students wore orange as well as traditional costume. A whole-school flag display was set up in the Science window as well as classroom displays.

Congratulations to G2 for being the winners of the Harmony Day window display competition. Their classroom has won a $50 voucher to spend at Kmart. Well done G2 and to all the classrooms for their amazing displays.

OUT OF SCHOOL SPORTS ACHIEVERS

Congratulations to our own Chantelle and Kiara whose u14’s team won the very first girl’s premiership for their club.

Natalia and her baby buffs teammates came from behind to win by a point in their grand final. Love seeing our students doing amazing things in the community.

Another student doing great things in the community. Our quiet achiever Luke won the Coaches Award for the Under 16’s Buffaloes team yesterday.

The coach award is given to the player who shows sportsmanship, positive attitude and team spirit throughout the season.

If your child is involved in an after school activity and you would like us to share their achievements with our Henbury community, please send us photos and a little write up to tell us what they have been up too.

STAFF VS STUDENTS BASKETBALL TOURNAMENTS

In week Seven, Term One, Staff vs Students basketball tournaments started at Henbury School. Games will continue to be played throughout the year. Games are held on a Thursday at Morning Tea and at Lunch on a Friday - this allows Senior School Outreach students and Middle School Outreach students to be involved in the tournament. The idea came from Kayden Wheeler, one of Hanbury’s Learning Commissioners. Kayden said that he really enjoyed participating in the staff vs student basketball games last year, at Hanbury’s Best Last FriYAY ever, and wanted to continue this at school to promote inclusion, fun and assist his peers to want to come to school more. A condition of being in the Basketball Grand Final is that students maintain high attendance over the year.

NTLC NEWS

This year, Henbury’s School captains are part of the 2023 Student Voice Peak Group (SVPG). Roanin and Shawn had to apply for their positions along with many Senior year students from across the NT. Only 16 students were selected and fortunately the boys make up the 16 and have both represented Henbury with pride. They have attended two online conferences and will attend two face to face conferences at the end of May. Both boys continue to demonstrate kindness and resilience and always share the importance of listening to their peers and being their voice at SVPG.
