ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

On Thursday this week many of our senior students attended the AANT Street Smart High event held at the Darwin Convention Centre. Along with students from other top end high schools. Students learnt about the realities of road trauma and the knowledge they need to be safe drivers and passengers. This was a confronting but valuable event for our students to attend.

The annual school Mother’s Day Stall will be held at Henbury on Week 4 Friday 12th May. Students may bring money in to purchase a gift for their mum or someone else special. Items are all handmade in the school’s many skillset, enterprise and classroom programs. Our wider school community is welcome from 10:20am-10:50am. The campus café won’t be open, but please note the Henbury Precinct Café will be open at Casuarina Village if you would like to pop in to grab a coffee/morning tea/lunch. Gifts are also available to purchase from the café if you can’t make it to the stall.

All Abilities Netball kicked off for the 2023 season again last week. This is an out of school netball tournament for people with a disability. Over 25 current and past Henbury students participate every Thursday night at Marrara Netball Stadium on outdoor Court 1. Please come on down and cheer the players on from 6pm! You’ll be impressed by the talent, skills and team spirit from all players!

On Saturday 29th April the Crewz’n Brew trailer was out in action at the annual NT Autism Walk. It was great to be part of the special morning to “increase awareness, acceptance and understanding of Autism in the NT” how professional do our students look as they operate the trailer serving up delicious coffees!

This week many of our Year 12 students participated in a site visit to Helping People Achieves (HPA) various work enterprises and programs. They visited Shoal Bay Recycle Centre, Kokoda Industries, AusDesigns and the Particiapte Engage Grow (PEG) program. Interest was sparked for the many opportunities HPA offers for post school. Organisation for work experience at these sites underway for those students interested and keen to pursue HPA as a post school pathway/work place.

HENBURY STAFF PROFILE

Ambrose Nicholls-Skene

Hello! I’m Ambrose! I am a middle year’s teacher specialising in music, media studies and English. Having recently graduated with a Graduate Diploma in Education (Special Education) my teaching is focused on making classrooms accessible to everybody. This is my second time at Henbury School, having taught music with the NT Music School.

Outside of school I am an OLT tutor, involved in teacher education focusing on students with additional needs. At my last school I initiated a reading comprehension program for students requiring additional support in converting text to meaningful reading. I am also President of the Professional Teachers Association of the Northern Territory, working with teachers across the territory to deliver and attend professional development events.

After school I love to play guitar, garden in my vegetable patch, and take my two (naughty) puppies for walks on the beach.

Lei Cong

Hi, I’m Lei. Since moving to Australia from China, I did my diploma of Early childhood in Melbourne in 2017. I decided to continue my Batchelor of teaching at CDU. I moved to Darwin where I enjoy getting out, fishing, hunting and camping when I can. I graduated in 2020 and started my teaching career at Nakara Primary school; teaching Transition, Year 1 and 2. At the start of this year I took on a relief role at Henbury school and was extremely pleased to be offered a full-time position with the school. I’m currently taking further studies towards a Master’s degree in Education.

Jo Milne

My is name Jo. After meeting my husband while working in the Tanami region, we have lived in various places throughout the Territory. Since 2000 we have lived in Alice Springs, Gove and Darwin. My children were born in the Territory. After 20 years in the Real Estate industry I decided a career change was in order. I have always had an interest in Special education and commenced work at Nemarluk school in 2018. I have chosen to further my interest, with the ever-changing nature of special education, by moving to Henbury school which allows me to work with older students. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Henbury and the support offered from all staff members has been truly amazing. I look forward to my future at Henbury School.

Lachlan has become comfortable within the class environment to accept help while working. Lachlan enjoys swimming, bike riding and playing chasey with staff.

Kobey has settled well into our class and has become an independent learner only needing to be prompted on occasion. Kobey has excelled over and beyond our expectations in the classroom.

Fatima has enjoyed learning how to do the washing and her daily tasks. She also enjoys going for her morning walks. Fatima has become a very independent young lady she completed her morning tasks without prompting and will ask for help when needed. Fatima

BLUE 4

This year the Blue 4 originals (Mark, Oliver, Vlad and Jacky) welcomed Ayden, Nick and Gerard to our room.

Every morning we start our day with an online quiz called Factle. We get a new question daily and as a group we have 5 chances to answer correctly. We follow up with a guess the country quiz called Worldle. We learn about the countries general facts and then we check Smart Traveller for the latest travel information. We learn something new every day and we record our discoveries on our travelling wall. It is a class highlight.

We have enjoyed some great excursions this semester. A couple of our favourites have been visiting the waterfront for lunch and seeing two huge cruise ships, as well as enjoying a picnic and swim/play at Lake Leanyer.

We have celebrated Mark and Vlad’s birthday. We always have a party. The birthday boy gets to invite one friend from another class. We play party games and share party food.

We are currently making scrunchies, beeswax wraps and mango chutney for the Mother’s Day stall. We also work hard in the Nursery getting plants ready for sale.

The best thing about our class is we have fun and laugh every day.

This year Green 3 (G3) has started with 8 new year 7 students. Our students are Trivett, Molyun, Isobel, Leilani, Elizabeth, Petersen, Marlee and Keturah. The class has quickly settled into their new class/school, building some great friendships within the class and around the school.
