Parents/Carers
Another fantastic week for Henbury School as we won the Disability Services award for Excellence in Innovation (sponsored by HPA- Helping People Achieve) for 2015. Henbury School was nominated for the innovative and inventive approaches to helping students increase their skills and post school outcomes.
Henbury has four business enterprises- Opportunity Knocks, Coffee Club, Gardening crew and Sense-ational designs all innovative programs through which students can apply their skills towards certificates in Business, Retail, Horticulture, Hospitality and Trade and supported employment opportunities at HPA, Ausdesigns and Kokoda Industries.
Opportunity Knocks
The Opportunity Shop is a secure workplace for students provides a workplace for adults with disabilities. Opportunity Knocks is not just a work training site but is a business that is employing clients supported by Disability Employment Support Service (DESS). Henbury School further demonstrates excellence in innovation and interconnectivity between mainstream and disability by providing post school community access pathways for clients of Life Without Barriers, currently 6 LWB clients are accessing this program.
Gardening Crew – The garden activities are completed in teams, providing opportunities for students to practice communication skills and to work closely with others toward a common goal in a non-threatening environment. Students undertake Work Health and Safety training. Students have ventured into the community offering services to community members since 2013.
Coffee Club –Trains and prepares students for Hospitality courses at CDU. The business expanded and grew into the Coffee Club where students are introduced to the skills and knowledge required to gain employment in a cafe or coffee shop. Students learn about a range of coffee styles; preparing and presenting coffee and the use and maintenance of a commercial espresso machine. This ‘café’ is open to the public one day a week.
Sense-ational Designs – Is a textile and screen printing business. The success of this innovative business has led to our students accessing a new Certificate in Textile Clothing and Footwear. Contracts have been with Darwin City Council for Youth Week, Darwin Symphony Orchestra and Palmerston Netball Association.
Enterprise Education.
Enterprise Education programs at Henbury School are designed to lead into one of the 4 businesses and are sometimes the inspiration for a new business.
The Tea Towel Run (pre work skills gives students’ confidence when working in outside agencies eg RDH Laundry)
Sweet Treats and Cupcakes build pre work skills for Coffee Club and then Certificates in Hospitality, Food Preparation, and Bakery.
Tie Dye is a classroom based business that trades through Opportunity Knocks and online. Pre work skills lead to Sense-ational Designs and Certificates in Retail, Textile Clothing and Footwear and Business.
School Farm and Garden are part of Henbury’s sustainability program and is a creative approach for students for pre training in WH&S procedures as well as construction skills. It provides opportunities for students to practice communication skills and work closely with others toward common goals in a non-threatening environment.
‘Shoe Box Tasks’ is classroom based, and creates the opportunity for high support students to experience success and build upon that success for greater skill and independence. Individuals with high developmental needs work on packaging and assembling the ‘Tasks’. Skills learnt can be transferred to Opportunity Knocks, Gardening Crew and HPA.
Henbury School did extremely well to win this award as it was up against other finalists from Life without Barriers- Katherine, Adult Allied Health Team and MJD Foundation Ltd, all worthy contenders themselves.
Congratulations to all staff members involved in the running of these programs and also to staff members who put together and wrote the application itself.

Greetings from CSC Henbury Outreach!
It has definitely been busy at CSC this semester! We start the week with our shopping/cooking program. Students decide what they want to cook for lunch and we study the recipe. Then we head to Caz to buy groceries and while we’re there we do our banking practice. After recess we prep, cook, and then sit down to a nice class lunch together.
Tuesday is VET day when Omri goes to CDU Palmerston for his Cert II in IT and Nick goes to St John’s for Cert I in Bakery. Both boys have now completed their courses with flying colours. Min Min has also completed a VET Block Cert I in Cooking at CDU Palmerston and the whole class went to enjoy her Graduation Lunch.
Wednesday is time for learning about keeping active and healthy at Margy’s Fun & Fitness. The whole class has been sweating it out with Margy this semester.
Thursday is HGD and the Senior Girls Group went to Eclectic Hair Design one week for new hairdos. As you can see by the photo they were very happy with the results.
