ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Dear Parents/Carers
Firstly I would like to introduce myself, Sarah Corry, as the new Assistant Principal of Henbury School. I have been a teacher in the Territory for 20 years. Many of you I will already know, as I was the Senior Teacher here at Henbury from 2012 to 2017. Henbury School would like to thank Rod Opie for acting as Assistant Principal and the contributions he has made to our school over the past 4 years. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
This term we welcome the following SESO’s to our amazing team, Aminah Howard to Blue 1, Helen Hanson to Purple 3, Madeline Brannelly to Purple 1, Callum Kanaris to Nightcliff Middle, Michelle Clements to Blue 2, Blake O’Donnell to Blue 2, Ted Chirema to Yellow 3 and Green 1. We also have two teachers joining our team, Jodi McDonald replacing Sue Price and Craig Harding at Nightcliff Middle. Leanne Shearer is on leave for the next 6 weeks. We welcome Anne Crossley as our acting Business Manager while she is away. We wish Peter Fuller sleep filled nights while he is on paternity leave.
On Friday, I was extremely lucky and proud to be at a presentation by our students from the Learning Commission. They presented to schools from the Casuarina Precinct and Katherine region, at the Michael Long Centre. Our Learning Commission students are creating a stronger voice for the students at Henbury School. They are leading change through collecting the “voices” of all our students at Henbury. The Learning Commission is directly related to the data received through the school perception surveys, completed in 2017. This survey is currently open for 2018. We strongly encourage you to complete this as the information collected supports the school’s decision making and future direction.

In Week 3 we had a record number of students attend our annual school camp at Bachelor. Thank you Paul Drewitt who lead the organization of such an awesome opportunity for our students. A huge well done to our dedicated staff for their time and commitment on school camp and to those who stayed back at school and juggled classes and duties for those students who didn’t attend.

We have some exciting events coming up including Family Night next Thursday 23 August, Science Fair on Monday 27 August and Father’s Day Market Stall on Tuesday 28 August.
On Friday 21 September, Henbury School will be involved in a whole school professional development day. All staff will be engaged in learning on best practice for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Students are not required at school. SR@H will be open for those families who require it. Please contact Angie on 89977099 or 0408 147 876 to book in your child.
Sports vouchers were sent out in Week 1. If you have misplaced it please call 1800 817 860 or go to sport.voucher@nt.gov.au if you have any queries.

HI ALL, PURPLE 2 BOYS HERE!
We have had an amazing start to Term 3. Last week Deacon, James and Tom went on school camp to Bachelor. They participated in a range of activities including rock climbing, archery, bike riding and Tom even got on the flying fox.
In Human Growth and Development this Semester we are focusing on ‘safety’. We have started our unit by looking at different signs in our community that can assist us to be safe. On our last Community Access trip, we took photos of a range of signs around Darwin. We really enjoyed hunting for different signs!
This Semester we are doing a unit on ‘Transport’. We have started by looking at the different types of transport and how they are used. We made some bus driver hats by following a procedure. As a team, we have also started constructing a bus out of cardboard. Here is a photo of Tom helping with some of the painting and some of the hats we made.
In Skill Sets, Deacon and Paulo have started Horticulture where they have been assisting in building the greenhouse out of plastic bottles and bamboo. Simaki has started Woodwork, he is working very hard on making a cheeseboard.
In other news, we have a new team member. Her name is Maddy and she fits very well in our class. She worked at Henbury School many years ago and she is back for more fun. Welcome back to Henbury Maddy!
From the Purple 2 team.
PURPLE 3
Purple 3 welcomes Helen. She helps us at school in our classroom and takes us bike riding. She’s really good at taking photos of us doing our work.
On Fridays Aidan, Jayden and Harsh take the bus to Rising Stars Basketball at Marrara Stadium. They play for the Tiger Sharks and Purple Power. We’ve been working on team work skills and encouraging our team mates. We bounce the ball, run down the court, pass the ball and shoot goals.
This semester everyone in our class is going to Skills Sets. Will is learning Horticulture with Shannon, Jayden goes to Hospitality with Felicity, Leigh is learning about Bike Maintenance with Matumba, Harsh and Aidan go to SENSEational Designs with Leizl.
We are learning about our bodies in Human Growth and Development. Here’s a great shot of us working together to name our body parts.
Jayden, Leigh and Jane went to camp this year, we had great time doing rock climbing, archery, bikes and on the high ropes.
YELLOW 3 CASH 4 CONTAINERS
In Term 2, Yellow 3 went to Cash 4 Containers for work experience.
We learnt how to stay safe using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). We had to wear closed in shoes, gloves, safety glasses and ear muffs.
We sorted the bottles, cardboard and cans; we emptied bottles, we washed bins and we counted cardboard containers.
Cash 4 Containers get their containers from people’s houses, from oil rigs, hotels and other businesses. They employ young people with a disability. Four students who graduated from Henbury now have jobs at Cash 4 Containers.
Cash 4 Containers need more donations. They would be happy to come to your house to collect your containers. If you are interested please call The Down Syndrome Association on 0498 098 735 or send an email to admin@downsyndroment.com.au
Cash for Containers has a Facebook page too via the link below:

MENINGOCOCCAL VACCINES FOR YEAR 9 – 12 STUDENTS
In Term 3 and 4 of 2018, free Meningococcal ACWY vaccine will be offered to all Darwin and Palmerston students in Year 9-12 at school. The incidence of the meningococcal W strain has risen in recent years and this strain is easier to catch and causes severe disease.
- Meningococcal bacteria are carried harmlessly in the back of the nose and throat by about 10% of the population at any one time
- On rare occasions, the bacteria invade the bloodstream and cause serious infections
- With appropriate treatment, most people with the disease recover, however about 8-10% will die and about 15% may experience complications such as hearing loss, gangrene requiring skin grafts, loss of limbs or kidney failure.
- Adolescents aged 15-19 years are most likely to carry the bacteria and vaccination will protect them from disease but also reduce the spread of meningococcal disease in the community.
The vaccine provides protection against 4 strains of meningococcal disease (ACWY) and is administered as a single dose by school nurses.
Parents/guardians should read the parent information sheet, sign and return the Meningococcal ACWY Vaccine Program consent form to the school. If a parent chooses not to vaccinate their child at school the vaccine is available at Community Care Centres - Casuarina and Palmerston, Danila Dilba or GP practices (although a consultation fee may apply

Meningococcal B strain is not covered by this vaccine. Please see your general practitioner to discuss Meningococcal B vaccine and to obtain a script.
