Assistant Principal’s Report

Welcome to Week 7, Term 3!

It is wonderful to see students engaged in their learning through a variety of health and wellbeing, enterprise, work training and functional academic programs on offer at Henbury School.

I would like to thank all of our incredible teachers and SESO’s for their continued contributions to improving student outcomes.

Senior Staff Roles

I would like to welcome Raylee Parker to the Senior Leadership Team. Raylee will be Acting Senior Teacher Transition and Pathways (ST1 TAP). I will continue Acting as Assistant Principal.

School Camp

Last week’s School Camp at Batchelor Outdoor Education Centre was action packed and full of fun activities for students and staff alike!

Thank you to Paul Drewitt for coordinating the camp and to all staff who attended for supporting the participation of all our students. To the wonderful Raylee Parker and Sarah Penney THANKYOU for the incredible food – unfortunately this was the last year we will be allowed to cater food for ourselves. Their replacements will have a lot to live up to!

A special thanks also to all staff who remained at school and ensured fun and engaging activities were available to non-campers.

T/EAP Review Meetings

Teachers will be in contact with families and caregivers in the coming weeks to arrange times for Term 4 T/EAP Review meetings. These meetings are an opportunity to celebrate students’ learning and progress across the year.

Steps Towards Capability

Walk and Expo

Grab your friends, family, school mates, colleagues and pooches and step up to raise vital funds for Territorians with a disability at Steps Towards Capability 2019.

The walk starts at 8am with a gentle 3 km stroll from the Trailer Boat Club to the entrance of East Point Reserve and back. Set your own pace, buddy up along the way and have a chat as you walk - it’s about making connections, not getting the fastest time!

Henbury School are avid supporters of Helping People Achieve and will also be holding a table at the Expo, so come on down to show your support!

We have created a Henbury School team. Go online and register.

BLUE 2

Blue 2 have had a busy start to Term 3. We have a new teacher who has joined us, Sam, and we have said goodbye to one of our SESOs, Claudia, who has left to start her Maternity leave.

Claudia has been replaced by Crystal Laube. We welcome Crystal to the team!

Community Access

During week 4 we visited the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory.

We were really amazed to see part of the Henbury Meteorite on display there. We learned that the Henbury Meteor crashed into the earth 4,700 years ago and left 12 craters in the Central Australian desert. The Henbury meteor weighed several tonnes and hurtled to earth at 40,000km per hour before fragmenting on impact.

As well as looking at the Henbury Meteor we enjoyed the rest of the displays and finished by having lunch in the café.

Harlow the Therapy Dog

We know lots of classes like to share their experiences of having Harlow in their classrooms – and we do too! We look forward to our Monday visits with Harlow. Next time she visits we are going to be laying on our mats so we can get some up close Harlow cuddles!

Skillsets

This term our class started Skillsets for the first time this year.

Hayley made a pin cushion during her time in Sensational Designs, selecting her own fabrics and colours. To operate the sewing machine Hayley pressed the foot pedal with her hand. Her next project will be a headband.

Josie is participating in Recycling, Maree Horticulture and Gage Hospitality.

Our class really appreciates the opportunity to engage with skillsets for the learning we experience and the time to socialise with other students.

NT ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Last weekend nine Henbury students competed as part of the Darwin Region Athletics team at the NT Athletics Championships. Our students were selected to represent Darwin Region based on their results when they competed as part of Henbury & Outreach’s, first Athletics team (26 students) at the Top End Schools Regional Athletics in June this year. The three day NT Championships at Marrara Athletics Stadium, saw over 400 athletes from 18 different teams, representing each school region and Athletics club in the NT.

This experience not only allowed the representatives to develop and display their talents, the team members were able to reflect on each of Henbury School values, teamwork, respect, responsibility, resilience and compassion. It was a proud and powerful occasion for all students, teacher and families & carers involved.

Thank you to all the officials involved with running the event, parents and carers for your continual enthusiasm and to Callum, Nim and Amanda for helping to support the students during the championships. Well done to all the students, we are proud of your achievements.

ALL ABILITIES NETBALL

It has been an amazing All Abilities Netball season. We had 15 Henbury students and 2 ex Henbury students playing in 2 Banks Bulldog Netball teams. The competition was played over 8 weeks and was held at Marrara Netball courts on Thursday nights. Every week, players turned up in their Bulldogs singlets along with their cheer squad which included; parents/carers, Nannas and siblings. Over the 2019 Season, every single player showed an amazing level of growth, dedication, team work and sportsmanship.

Congratulations to Rosemary, Nicole, Molly, Emily and Nadia, who were selected to represent Darwin in the NT Dragonflies team. This representative team will be going to Brisbane to compete against other teams from around Australia. Well done to everyone on an amazing Netball season.
