ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
The Gifted bus arrived back today – resplendent in its new Henbury bus wrap, it definitely looks better than it did! All Signs NT and the RFDS Darwin contributed half the costs each ($5000 ea) to get it wrapped. Thanks to Vincent Poke, Janine Inggs, Charli Gageler and Nicole Hennessey from the Henbury Promotion ASIP group for their help in getting this achieved!
PAT testing
Students are currently undergoing Progressive Assessment Tests in class in Maths and Comprehension. Results will be discussed in reports that are due at the end of the year.
T/EAP Meetings
As parents/guardians would be aware we are in the process of T/EAP reviews. These have been running since 23 October and are due to finish on 9 November. Thank you to all of those Parents/Guardians who have attended and a huge thank you to staff for the preparation that has gone into these reviews.
Melbourne Science trip
Eight lucky students were chosen to experience the wonders of an interstate trip to Melbourne last week. This trip was filled with all things Science. Lead by Joan Ocampo and Rod McKay, the students were chosen through their involvement with our Kids Teaching Kids program. The students were Coral Lee N, Andrew KN, Saxon H, Desbina N, Kate C, Alex A, Nadia K and Dawyte C.
WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY
Thank you to Lauren Moss, Member for Casuarina for the HUGE cake for World Teachers’ Day.
CHIEF MINISTERS AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN THE PUBLIC SECTOR
Henbury School is very pleased and proud to say that Mrs Felicity Faull was a recipient of the Chief Minister’s Public Sector Medal. Mrs Faull was awarded her medal at a black tie event held at the Darwin Convention Centre on Friday 3rd November.
The Chief Minister’s Awards for Excellence in the Public Sector recognise the best and brightest initiatives and individuals that make a positive and significant benefit to the Northern Territory and Territorians more broadly. Felicity was nominated for a medal which recognises her outstanding and commendable public service. It is her service above and beyond the normal requirements of the Transition and Pathways teacher and her sustained high level performance and focus on outcomes and recognisable benefits to our students that has led to the development of such innovative programs as Crewz’n Brew and Hair on Henbury, both award winning enterprises this year. Felicity’s passion and outstanding capability have proven her to be an excellent recipient for this award.
Teaching in the Territory Excellence Awards
Henbury had three staff members listed as finalists in their sections, Deb Hall in Special Education Educator, Rod McKay Support Worker and Natalie Althouse Aboriginal Educator. All three are to be congratulated on becoming finalists.
Natalie was chosen as the Darwin Regional Winner. Natalie brings to her complex role at Henbury an understanding of indigenous culture and a strong connection within the wider community. She is a strong indigenous role model. Natalie does not just counsel students whilst they are at school. She is aware that some students with complex needs require a plan for when they leave school, she has made connections with Head Space and other service providers for these students. Natalie’s counselling does not always take place inside her office, she can often be seen kicking a football with a student or sitting outside having a chat. Through her counselling, students have made positive steps forward in developing their own resilience skills and strategies.
JOHN LAING AWARD
Last Friday, our Principal Carolyn Edwards was presented with a John Laing Award from the Principal Australia Institute, for her work developing leadership with our staff. Sue Fisher accepted the award on her behalf. We are all very proud of her achievement and grateful to have such an inspiring and dedicated leader at Henbury School.
ABC DARWIN 105.7
Last week our Principal Carolyn Edwards and students were interviewed by 105.7 ABC Darwin Radio about the year that was: how students, staff and community have embraced the new school grounds.

Kids Teaching Kids - Melbourne Trip
On October 23-27, selected students from Henbury School represented the Northern Territory to the Kids Teaching Kids Melbourne Water Conference attended by more than 500 students and teachers across Australia. Dawyte, Saxon, Andrew, Alex, Nadia, Kate, Coral Lee and Desbina made the school proud by presenting a short film about the school’s aquaponics system and how it used recycled water to mutually benefit the fish and vegetables at the school farm which opened the event. Dawyte and Desbina brilliantly presented Henbury’s water warrior shield and shared ideas on how the Top End conserve and preserve the beauty and richness of our natural water resources. All students participated in different environmental workshops that focused on water efficiency and environmental sustainability.
The group was privileged to have a tour around Melbourne University and learned ways on how to save electricity and water using renewable energy. The students enjoyed the Gala Dinner wherein they found new friends and fused with the vibrant crowd in singing with the live band and danced at the disco.
They also joined students from around Australia and New Zealand in the Environmental Project Day at Collingwood Children’s Farm wherein they gained hands on experiences on how to keep up a community farm and had a close encounter with farm animals. They also learned from Melbourne Water how the city preserves its water supply by minimising the use of drinking water through the use of recycled water for irrigation and gardening. Kate and Coral Lee represented the group and pledged their commitment at the last day of the conference in which they commit to being agents of change and inspiration to their peers in becoming water warriors and protectors of the Earth.
After the conference, students were rewarded with a tour around different museums and other fun places which includes the Melbourne Museum, IMAX, Science Works, Sea Life Aquarium, Melbourne Star Observation Wheel, China Town and South Wharf DFO for shopping. They experienced joining the busy crowd and travelling around the city using trains, trams and buses. It was a very successful trip that brought meaningful, positive and memorable learning experiences to students and staff. Thank you Kids Teaching Kids, Qantas Airways, Melbourne Water, Henbury School and all the families who made this trip possible.
A big thank you to Joan Ocampo who organised the trip.

Cert II Work Skills & Vocational Pathways
In Week 1 of Term 4, 16 Senior Outreach students successfully completed a Certificate II Work Skills and Vocational Pathways course through BCA Training National. The training was delivered as part of a grant from the Department of Business and took place over five weeks, commencing in Term 2. Students deserve a huge congratulations for their efforts in completing this course and developing meaningful employability skills.
Yellow 2
This Semester our class has been very busy. Most of the boys attended camp and enjoyed the family night disco. Adrian, Harry and Daniel have stayed at the school house. They plan their whole stay including after school activities, dinner, eating out, breakfast and shopping. Last term Yellow 2 went out for two class dinners. One at Seafood on Cullen and the other at Nirvana. Adrian planned each night, choosing the venue, booking and organising invites. The boys loved socialising outside of school, whilst learning valuable life skills. Another successful community event has been Adrian’s Get Together. Friends and parents joined our class at Kingpin for lunch, bowling and arcade. We have also been working hard with our class Enterprise of making Mango Chutney. We have had huge support from staff at both Henbury and Nemarluk with over 80 jars ordered. At the end of this month Adrian and Harry will be graduating. They have been contributing to the occasion by making and delivering invites and tickets. We are going to miss our mates but we know they will still remain lifelong friends.

Yellow 5
The end of the year is fast approaching and Yellow 5 students are busy with their weekly programs and finishing projects in time for the holiday break. Students have been focusing on their life-skills training and work experience this semester and enriching their gained knowledge in these placements.
The students and staff in Yellow 5 look forward to Fridays when they go on community access excursions. They have travelled to various places throughout the year using public transport. Students purchase their own lunches on these outings and utilising their knowledge of money and budgeting.
